Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The ‘Amiable’ First Generation of the Gotei 13
"Captain Araki, Captain Unohana, I have been waiting here for you both! Please follow me immediately. Captain-Commander Yamamoto and all the other captains are already assembled in the meeting room."
As soon as Araki and Unohana arrived at the gates of the 1st Division's barracks, a 1st Division officer dressed in the standard black shihakushō approached the two captains.
"Looks like we really are the last ones to arrive."
Araki chuckled and turned to Unohana with a relaxed smile.
"Let's hurry to the meeting room!"
"We don't want Captain-Commander Yamamoto to scold you later."
Unohana rolled her eyes at Araki's nonchalant demeanor.
"Then we better pick up the pace."
"Old Man Yama's lectures can put anyone to sleep, and he never stops once he starts."
Hearing this, Araki chuckled lightly and couldn't resist cracking a joke about his dear teacher, Captain Commander Yamamoto.
"Uh..."
The 1st Division officer, tasked with guiding the newly appointed 11th Division Captain Araki and his lieutenant, Yachiru Unohana, to the meeting room, broke into a cold sweat upon hearing Araki's casual and unreserved remarks about their Captain-Commander.
Throughout the Gotei 13, only Araki—whom Yamamoto personally regarded as his successor—would dare to make such comments about the Captain-Commander.
"Retsu, you know, Old Man Yama isn't as stern and dignified as you all imagine. That's just a front. You wouldn't believe the things he's done in his younger days.
Before the 1st Division officer could calm down, he heard Araki's voice behind him, once again making light of Yamamoto.
The officer, fearing he might overhear something he wasn't supposed to, quickened his pace to avoid the conversation altogether.
"We've arrived..."
"Captain Yamamoto and the other captains are waiting for you just behind that door. Captain Unohana, you probably already know the way. I still have tasks to attend to, so I'll take my leave."
The officer spoke hurriedly before disappearing with a flash step, as though fleeing for his life.
It must be said, anyone capable of serving in the 1st Division was no fool. He understood all too well that while Araki might casually spill secrets, he himself couldn't afford to listen. Otherwise, he might not live to see another day.
"Why'd he run off? It's not like I'm a monster."
Araki shook his head helplessly at the fleeing officer. All he had done was recount some embarrassing moments from Yamamoto's younger days as a teacher at the Genji School. Why was everyone so scared?
"Retsu, let's head inside."
Seeing the officer's clear unwillingness to engage, Araki didn't dwell on it. He motioned for Unohana to follow him as he pushed open the grand doors adorned with the 1st Division's emblem.
With a soft creak, the doors opened, revealing the already assembled captains of the Gotei 13.
"Yo. Everyone's here already?!"
Araki strode into the room as if he were the captain-commander himself, casually greeting the other captains. As he spoke, his gaze swept across the faces of the captains present.
"Hmm, the first generation of the Gotei 13 captains... what a charming bunch they are."
"Not a single one looks remotely human! Where on earth did these monsters come from?!"
Araki shook his head repeatedly as he observed the captains to his left.
Due to the positioning, Araki stood opposite Yamamoto, making his left side correspond to Yamamoto's right, where the even-numbered division captains—2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th—stood.
Compared to the odd-numbered division captains, the even-numbered ones at least looked somewhat human. As for the odd-numbered captains, Araki couldn't bear to look; their appearances were simply too outrageous.
On the even-numbered side, the 2nd Division Captain, Chika Shihōin, was a striking black-skinned man, embodying the refined genetics of the illustrious Shihōin family.
Apart from being darker-skinned due to historical reasons, every member of the family—male or female—could be considered stunning.
The 4th Division Captain, Chigiri Shijima, was pale and emaciated, with dull, lifeless gray hair and perpetually weary eyes.
While he couldn't compare to Chika Shihōin in terms of looks, at least he resembled a human—just a frail one in desperate need of rest.
As for the 6th Division Captain, Furōfushi Saitō, her appearance needed no introduction for those in the know...
But when Araki's gaze landed on the 8th Division Captain, his eyes lit up:
"A woman whose chest prevents her from seeing her toes is true beauty! The ancients were not wrong."
The 8th Division Captain, Batsu'unsai Katori, was a sight to behold. Her figure was so extraordinary that when she looked down, she saw nothing but the curves of her chest.
Batsu'unsai Katori PICTURE
"What majesty! What magnificence!"
For once, Araki found himself at a loss for words, unable to adequately describe the breathtaking scene before him.
"Araki, what are you staring at?!"
Just as he was marveling at Batsu'unsai Katori's "artistry," Saitō, standing beside her, moved to block his view.
"Excuse me, but could you move aside? I can't see anything with you standing there."
Araki's once burning passion for artistic appreciation was immediately extinguished by Saitō's interference.
"What?! What more do you want to see?"
Saitō's eye twitched at Araki's audacity. Was size really that important?
Araki remained silent, thinking to himself that while Katori's "art" was like Naruto: Shippuden, Saitō's was akin to Boruto—a clear and painful disparity.
"Curse you, Araki!"
Fuming with embarrassment, Saitō reached out to grab Araki's collar.
However, before she could touch him—
Smack!
Unohana swiftly slapped Saitō's hand away.
"Do not be disrespectful to my captain."
With a playful smile, Unohana stepped in front of Saitō, intentionally emphasizing her own impressive figure.
"I've lost… I've truly lost..."
Saitō stared at Unohana's figure, her spirit crumbling as if struck by the overwhelming power of an enemy's Bankai.
"Wait a minute."
"Unohana, this is a Gotei 13 Captains' meeting! You are no longer the leader of the 11th Division, so why are you even here?"
Finally snapping back to reality, Saitō glared at Unohana with a hint of hostility.
"It was my decision to have her attend."
A raspy voice suddenly echoed from the front of the room.
"Captain-Commander Yamamoto?!"
Saitō turned in disbelief to face the source of the voice—none other than Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto himself, standing at the head of the assembled captains.
"Enough! This farce ends now."
"Araki, have Unohana take you to your position immediately."
"The rest of you, take your places. The Gotei 13 Captains' meeting is about to begin."
Yamamoto's stern voice brought the commotion to an abrupt end.
""Yes, sir!""
The captains quickly returned to their positions, even the usually unruly Saitō obediently falling in line.
Araki, led by Unohana, took his place between the captains of the 9th and 13th Divisions.
"I'd like to switch spots. At the very least, I want captains on either side of me who look human."
Araki sighed, glancing to his left at the skeletal, sinister-looking 13th Division Captain Saizō Sakahone, then to his right at the towering, gold-toothed brute of the 9th Division, Entetsu Kumoi. He felt utterly exhausted.
