Marrying Unohana Retsu from Bleach

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Calm Before the Storm

Half a month passed quietly...

During this time, besides gaining experience and occasionally teasing Unohana, Araki discovered something interesting.

His previous main quest…

[Main Quest: Become a part of the Gotei 13 in the Seireitei as a squad member.]

had recently been completed.

Upon receiving the quest rewards, a new item appeared in Araki's mind—a so-called "Second-Class Experience Package."

Out of curiosity, Araki focused his thoughts on the experience package. What he learned was:

[Second-Class Experience Package: Contains 1 billion experience points, which can be used for leveling up or fused to create a First-Class Experience Package.]

[First-Class Experience Package: Contains 10 billion experience points and can be synthesized by combining 10 Second-Class Experience Packages.]

"Huh…"

After reading the explanation from his system, he couldn't help but twitch the corner of his mouth.

So, the classification of these experience packages corresponds to the experience required for different spiritual power levels? For instance:

To upgrade from Third-Class Reiatsu to Second-Class, it takes 1 billion experience points.

To reach First-Class Reiatsu from Second-Class, it requires exactly 10 billion.

This realization made him sigh. Gaining this second-class experience package felt so effortless compared to the painstaking accumulation of experience he went through in the past.

Who knew how long it had taken him back then to grind his way to second-class Reiatsu?

Shaking his head at the thought, Araki refocused on his current objectives. He remembered a particular note tied to his main quest:

[Note: The amount of reward from the main quest depends on the rank of the position you obtain within the Gotei 13.]

In other words, the reward was tied to Araki's rank within the Gotei 13.

"If just being a captain earns me a Second-Class Experience Package, does that mean replacing the old man Yamamoto as the Captain-Commander would net me a First-Class Package and push my Reiatsu to First-Class instantly?"

The thought briefly crossed his mind before he quickly dismissed it.

Beating Yamamoto and becoming the Captain-Commander was an amusing notion, but it was just a daydream.

In reality, he'd rather avoid the trouble entirely. Araki wasn't delusional enough to think Yamamoto's blade had dulled just because he'd made a bit of progress himself.

"Sigh…"

With a sigh, he opened his character status panel.

Movement

[Shunpo (Flash Step): LV1 (+)]

Kido

[Hado (Destructive Spells): LV1 (+)]

[Bakudo (Binding Spells): LV1 (+)]

[Kaido (Healing Spells): LV1 (+)]

Skipping over most of the information, Araki's eyes landed on his movement techniques and Kido stats. These abilities had never been upgraded and remained at Level 1.

Among all his stats, only his Shunpo and Kido were at Level 1. Every other attribute, except Reiatsu, was already maxed out at Level 10.

It wasn't as though Araki hadn't trained in Shunpo or Kido—he had. It's just that his Ope Ope no Mi's ability made Shunpo less practical, and he genuinely lacked talent for Kido.

High Reiatsu didn't automatically mean high Kido talent. After all, characters like Kenpachi Zaraki and Ichigo Kurosaki were prime examples of high Reiatsu but abysmal Kido aptitude.

That said, Araki's raw stats were so high that even his clumsy use of Shunpo outpaced weaker opponents with greater technical skill. It was a case of brute force compensating for lack of finesse.

However, against enemies with equal or superior stats, this lack of technique would become a serious disadvantage.

With this in mind, Araki glanced at his experience points.

After 15 days of accumulation, he had amassed 46,890 points. His system still provided him with 2,000 daily experience points through training tasks and another 1,000 through daily attendance at the squad barracks.

Yes, Araki had unknowingly become a model worker: clocking in, clocking out, and consistently "arriving late and leaving early." So consistent, in fact, that people assumed his irregular hours were simply his natural schedule.

"System, allocate my points."

Without hesitation, Araki dumped all his experience into Shunpo.

As 11,110 points disappeared, his Shunpo skill instantly jumped to Level 5.

Unlike attributes like Reiatsu or Spirit Power, which started at 10 experience points for the first level, most of Araki's techniques—like Shunpo, Hakuda, Zanjutsu, and Kido—started at just 1 point per level and capped at Level 10.

In fact, both his Zanjutsu and Hakuda were already maxed out. His character was starting to look like a very specialized build, which made him slightly self-conscious.

Still, for skills like Shunpo and Kido—abilities he didn't rely on heavily—Level 5 was good enough for now.

With 35,000 points remaining, his perfectionist tendencies kicked in, and he leveled all three branches of Kido—Hado, Bakudo, and Kaido—to Level 5 as well.

The practical improvement was minimal, but it did increase his precision slightly.

"Not a huge improvement, but better than nothing," Araki muttered to himself.

Going forward, the daily experience points from training tasks would be used to shore up his weaker abilities. Accumulating enough experience to raise his Reiatsu was unrealistic—at 3,000 points a day, it would take 10,000 years to reach 10 billion.

In his mind, leveling up would have to rely on completing main quests and earning more experience packages.

"Sigh…"

With another sigh, Araki left the barracks and headed outside.

Passing by the 11th Division's training grounds, he saw Unohana Yachiru—now Unohana Retsu—leading her subordinates in swordsmanship practice.

"Retsu, leave training for later. Come with me."

"If we don't hurry, the old man will start ranting again."

He drew his zanpakuto as he spoke, releasing a green light that instantly evaporated the sweat from Retsu's body and replaced it with a faint herbal fragrance.

"Alright."

Retsu sheathed her sword and walked over.

"You seem worried about something, Araki," she said, noticing his furrowed brow.

"Are you concerned about Captain-Commander Yamamoto summoning us?"

"If that's the case, I don't think you need to worry too much. Today is probably just a routine captain introduction to let you meet the other squad leaders," she added, her tone calm and reassuring.

"No, it's not about the captain meeting."

"Retsu, don't you think the Soul Society has been too quiet lately? So quiet it's unsettling? It's giving me a strong sense of foreboding."

Walking toward the First Division barracks, Araki couldn't shake the feeling that something big was about to happen.

Captain Commander Yamamoto had called a mandatory captain meeting, explicitly forbidding any absences or excuses. This level of formality felt strange.

It reminded him of the saying, 'The storm is coming.'

If his hunch was correct, the ancient enemy that had haunted the Soul Society for a thousand years was about to strike.

"Sigh... The Soul Society really is a chaotic place," he muttered, shaking his head.

Retsu, walking beside him in silence, tightened her grip on her Zanpakuto. Whatever challenges lay ahead, she would face them with him.
