Chapter 24: Secrets Revealed
Secrets Revealed
As the tea party progressed smoothly, the elven countess, Lady Selya, raised her hand and asked politely,
“Excuse me. May I go flower-picking for a moment?”
Flower-picking was a subtle way of indicating that she needed to use the restroom.
Well, even elves need to attend to natural calls sometimes.
Lady Selya seemed to have taken a liking to the instant tea and had five refills already.
Feeling a mix of amusement and awkwardness, I noticed a subtle eye signal from the young lady.
Oh no, this means I have to be the one to guide her.
Although Lilith, a maid of the same gender, would have been more suitable for the task, she was currently engaged in a conversation with Lady Reneia about her experiences in the Earth school.
We had planned ahead on how to handle such situations, so I’ll just follow that, but it’s still a bit awkward.
Whether knowingly or unknowingly aware of my unease, the young lady decided to call out to Lady Selya herself.
“If that’s the case, Lady Selya, my servant, Isaya, will guide you. Is that alright?”
“If it’s your order, milady.”
“I apologize…”
Lady Selya blushed with embarrassment.
She’s usually elegant and dignified when interacting with Lilith and the young lady, but now, she looked adorably cute.
Yet, my discomfort in escorting a lady from the opposite sex to the restroom was even stronger.
Putting such thoughts aside, I composed myself and guided Lady Selya and her attendant elf maid to the nearest restroom located near the courtyard through the kitchen..
There was no need for explanations about how to use it; he had already put up a paper with instructions inside for such occasions.
A few minutes later, while leading Lady Selya back to the venue, she suddenly spoke up from behind.
“Um, Isaya-san… Can I ask you something?”
“W-What is it?”
Surprised by her sudden inquiry, I tried to remain composed.
I stopped and turned to face her, meeting her soft smile.
“Um, Isaya-san… Is it true that you are from Earth?”
“Yes, that’s correct,” I replied, “but… may I ask what you’d like to know?”
“I’m relieved… Well, I have a question for you,” she continued.
“If there’s something I can answer, please feel free to ask,” I replied, open to any inquiry.
“Good to know… um, about the ‘instant’ red tea from earlier, where can I get it?” she asked
“I’m glad you enjoyed it. As for that product—” I was about to explain when I suddenly realized something.
It seemed that the instant tea had piqued her curiosity.
As a surprise after the tea party, we had prepared tea packs as gifts.
While Japan, being relatively safe, it was considered inappropriate to let the young ladies from another world roam around.
So, Lady Silvinia had arranged for them to promote Japanese products to other nobles.
It was a cunning plan but it made sense; they were more likely to be receptive to things they had experienced firsthand.
Answering her questions without any hiccups, I wondered if it was because Lady Selya, like the young lady, didn’t let her status dictate her behavior.
Despite her dignified elegance as an elf, she lacked an intimidating presence, making it more comfortable to interact with her.
Of course, I maintained a respectful demeanor, not taking liberties with my attitude.
Still, I must be careful not to let myself slip up and act too familiar. As we were about to pass by the kitchen again, something happened.
“Kyaa!?
“Selya-sama!?”
Turning around I found Lady Cerise had fallen on her backside, and the reason was apparent –
the kitchen door opened while she was walking past.
The one who opened the door was… Hizuki-san.
Surprisingly, she seemed bewildered, her crimson eyes wide open, looking rather unlike herself.
She appeared to have committed an unusual mistake, but before I could switch my thoughts to handling the situation, I noticed something else.
Lady Selya didn’t seem to be attempting to stand up, but instead, she was gazing intently at Hizuki-san.
The elven maid accompanying her was also frozen in place. Realizing the situation, their faces turned pale, and then—
“Kyaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!”
“Ah!”
As Selya-sama’s loud scream echoed throughout the mansion, I couldn’t help but grimace at the sudden noise.
But more than that, I was bewildered by the fact that she screamed just upon seeing Hizuki-san.
Before I could fully process the situation, the elven maid hugged Selya-sama protectively, and she looked at me with a sense of urgency.
“You should get away from here too!”
“Why? What’s going on?”’
“Can’t you tell from her silver hair and crimson eyes?”
“What are you talking about?”
I couldn’t understand what they meant by the silver hair and crimson eyes.
Why was the maid glaring at Hizuki-san with a mixture of hostility and fear?
And why was Selya-sama trembling with a pale face?
But what puzzled me the most was Hizuki-san’s own attitude.
Why was she remaining silent?
Before I could make sense of it all, the maid continued, not taking her eyes off Hizuki-san.
“I can’t believe it! Why is there a half-vampire Vanpir here!?”
“Huh?”
When I heard the term from the maid’s mouth, all the noise in my head disappeared, leaving only emptiness.
And with that emptiness came new questions.
“A Vanpir?”
What did that mean?
Hizuki-san was supposed to be a vampire, right?
That was undeniable, as all the times she had bitten me proved it.
Yet… Hizuki-san didn’t deny it and kept her head lowered.
“Isaya-san wouldn’t know since he’s from Earth.”
“Selya-sama?”
“A Vanpir is a former human who was turned into a vampire by the Demon King. They are also known as the ‘Demon King’s Apostles’ and are feared in this world…”
“Demon King’s… Apostles?”
Even though I was still bewildered, Selya-sama asked me for details. The fact that Hizuki-san was associated with such a being was beyond belief.
The Demon King was defeated over thirty years ago.
Hizuki-san and I are the same age, so there’s no way the Demon King could have turned her into a vampire.
Even if she lied about her age, Lady and Silvinia-sama would have seen through it.
“I… I am…”
“Don’t say anything, you monster!!”
“Wha!?”
Before Hizuki-san could say anything, the maid yelled abusive words at her.
The moment they made eye contact, Hizuki-san was bombarded with verbal abuse, leaving her in a state of despair, unable to utter a word.
As she lowered her gaze for a moment, I could faintly see tears welling up in the corners of her eyes.
As soon as I realized that Hizuki-san was hurt, everything else swirling inside me became inconsequential.
It might be my imagination, or it could be something trivial, but I didn’t have a single doubt in my mind about standing up for HIzuki-san.
I stood in silence, defiantly blocking the way to protect her, and the maid glared at me with a piercing look
“What are you doing? Could it be that you’re being controlled!?”
“I’m in my right mind. At the very least, I won’t stand by and watch someone insult my colleague.” I replied, unreservedly stating the reason for my actions.
“What is this…?”
The maid couldn’t comprehend it, but I didn’t care about trying to make her understand or not.
“Calling her a colleague, she’s a half-vampire, right? The Dark Lord’s apostles do exist–“
“Don’t refer to Hizuki-san as a ‘Vanpir.’ I don’t know if she’s the Dark Lord’s apostle or whatever, but don’t associate her with those people,” I interjected firmly.
“Wha–“
Before she could finish her retort, I cut her off with an assertive voice that carried anger.
The maid, seemingly taken aback by my response, stumbled over her words, and Hizuki-san, who had been fearfully cowering, also reacted.
Unperturbed by their reactions, I allowed my emotions to guide my words.
“Have you ever witnessed her harming anyone?” I demanded from the maid.
“That’s… I haven’t,” she hesitated in her reply.
“You haven’t, right? Yet, just because her hair and eyes resemble theirs, you automatically label her as a monster… It’s you who are acting more monstrous,” I countered unapologetically.
“D-Don’t act all high and mighty when you don’t know anything!”
“Ugh…”
In a fit of rage, the maid slapped my cheek.
Although my vision blurred momentarily, the strength of an elf meant it didn’t hurt much, but it left a small cut on my lip.
“Thinking you know it all, huh…”
“…Indeed, I don’t know much, and I’m mostly ignorant. But one thing I can say with absolute certainty…”
During the time when the half-vampire Vanpir was known as the Dark Lord’s apostle, what kind of harm they caused, and maybe these two, this person, and Selya-sama were involved as elves.
That’s probably why they’re so frightened.
But for me, it’s not something I know or care about.
Ever since Lady took me in and I became her servant for over half a month, I’ve come to know Hizuki-san in my own way.
She may be unfriendly, mistrustful of humans, and standoffish, not to mention having a sharp tongue and a strict teaching style that never lets up.
Yet, when it comes to her work, she is meticulous, and she’s good at teaching too.
Occasionally, she shows a subtle kindness that’s hard to understand.
“The Hizuki Sakura I know is not the kind of monster who enjoys hurting others. If that weren’t the case, Lady and Shilvinia-sama wouldn’t have hired her as a maid or treated her with such affection as if she were family.”
She’s being branded as a monster… And if that’s the case, I have more than enough reason to want to help her.
Despite my confident response, the maid stood frozen, speechless.
Amidst a brief silence, the atmosphere was suddenly interrupted.
“—What on earth are you doing?”
“!”
Startled by the sudden interruption, everyone, except for me, turned to face the source.
There stood the young lady, who had rushed here after hearing Selya’s scream, her anger evident.
