Chapter 22: After completing the etiquette course
After completing the etiquette course
As the tea party approached, Lady Silvinia instructed me to learn the manners required of a servant from Hizuki Akatsuki.
Of all people, I ended up being paired with Hizuki-san, who still seemed awkward.
It’s extremely awkward, but I can’t refuse the Duchess’s orders. Instead, I decided to view it as an opportunity to reconcile with her.
Although the instruction began with a different goal other than learning manners, even a week later, a wall still separates us
It’s not because she avoids me…
You won’t believe me but, it’s simply because her teaching style was utterly unforgiving, like a strict Spartan.
I couldn’t even remember how many times she struck me with the shoe-horn in her hand. Though it hurt, to be honest, being bitten by her was even more painful.
Compared to having her fangs pierce my veins, her blows felt like mosquito bites.
Well, I’ve become more tolerant of pain, but regarding the manners, I can say that I’ve made significant progress in a short period.
Of course, I can’t compare to the skilled maid Hizuki, but I have reached an acceptable level.
Still, I plan to continue practicing until the day of the tea party to avoid any mistakes during the main event.
I particularly need to be careful about interacting with noble guests whose backgrounds I’m unfamiliar with.
If I were to admit that I didn’t know the guests invited by the Duke’s household, it would be an embarrassment for the young ladies.
It’s also essential to prevent any mishaps like offering the wrong choice of snacks or drinks. If I serve tea to someone who can’t drink it, it seems it won’t just end with me losing my head.
This knowledge, coupled with the manners training from Hizuki-san, has led me to review the list of guests and their data.
Fortunately, the number of nobles attending the tea party is manageable, and I can remember their names and preferences without much trouble.
However, there is one thing that caught my attention…
“Um, Hizuki-san, can I ask you something?”
“What is it?”
I called out to Hizuki-san, who is doing the final check of the items for the tea party, while still reviewing the list.
It’s work-related, so she doesn’t ignore me, and she prompts me with her usual calm voice.
Ignoring that, I continued while pointing at the section in the list that described Earl Gravis’s daughter.
“It says here that she’s a vampire. What should I do if she asks for blood or something?”
Among the nobles invited to the tea party are not just humans but also others of Hizuki’s race, vampires, as well as elves and other races.
While there’s no Duke on par with the Scarlet Family, for an ordinary person like me, they are all people from a different world and high above in status.
The reason why non-human races are given noble status is that King Verzeld saved the other world.
Before that, the political system of the other world had collapsed due to the rule of the Demon King.
After defeating the Demon King and becoming the ruler of the other world as a symbol of recovery, the King appointed lords without regard to their race, which caused dissatisfaction among the surviving aristocrats and royals.
However, the newly appointed lords proved their skills, successfully rebuilding relations with Earth, and silenced those who objected.
Now, more than thirty years later, non-human races being nobles is no longer questioned.
But back to the topic at hand.
Among the nobles invited to this tea party, the one who particularly caught my attention is Lady Reneia of the Gravis family, a vampire.
The list mentioned that she feeds on multiple butlers daily as if it’s just a snack.
I’d like to believe it won’t happen, but if she asks for my blood on a whim… I have no idea how to handle that. So, I decided to ask my senior, Hizuki-san.
Perhaps sensing my anxiety, Hizuki-san lowers her gaze and begins to speak.
“Don’t worry about that. Even if Lady Reneia requests blood, she won’t actually make you provide it Tsujizono-kun .”
“Really?”
I couldn’t help but ask again in surprise.
Wondering on what basis she can state that, I tilt my head, and Hizuki-san points to my left chest without saying a word.
Startled by the unexpected touch, I can’t help but flinch, but she continues without showing any concern about it.
“Tsujizono-san is Elina-sama’s slave… in other words, her property. If she were to touch the property of the Duke’s family and cause harm, it would be considered impolite.”
“So, being a slave also serves as a form of protection.”
“That’s right. Moreover, there’s the fact that there are no families in this other world that would want to offend the Scarlet family.”
“Indeed, the Duke’s family is in a class of its own…”
More than being about social status, it feels like I’m protected by the authority of the Scarlet Duke’s family.
Hizuki and Lilith are allowed to use me as their food because they have permission from the young lady,, so they won’t be reprimanded, but others will undoubtedly face consequences.
Regardless of the reason, it’s a relief to know that I won’t have to offer my blood, and I inwardly breathe a sigh of relief.
“Phew~ that’s a relief. So now, all I need to do is avoid making mistakes during the main event.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“I’ll make sure not to rely on Hizuki-san and Lilith too much on that day since they’ll be busy there too.”
“Please do. On the day of the event, I’ll be working behind the scenes.”
“Haha, it’s a huge responsibility, isn’t it… huh?”
As I casually joked and got carried away, I received an unexpected response, freezing my brain in the process.
Hey, Hizuki-san, what do you mean by “working behind the scenes”? This is the first time I’ve heard of it.
Staring blankly at my reaction, Hizuki-san let out a heavy sigh and turned her sharp gaze towards me.
It feels like she’s always looking at me with that kind of gaze.
“If I were to participate as a server, I wouldn’t drill you on manners like a Spartan-style. I needed to make sure you could manage on your own, even if it’s a makeshift arrangement. Fortunately, you remembered more than I expected, so it should be fine.”
“Well, um… Did Lady Silvania plan for this from the beginning?”
“I’ve always requested to work behind the scenes during tea parties and events, so she simply granted my wish.”
“Uh, I see…”
Although she’s obviously capable of doing the job, why is she doing this? Could it be related to her distrust of people?
The questions are endless, but she avoids my eyes, as if silently warning me not to ask any further.
Normally, such a request could be seen as grounds for disqualification as a maid, but Silvinia-sama might be aware of Hizuki-san’s secret.
I have no idea what it is, but if I get preoccupied with that and mess up during the tea party, everything will be ruined.
“Anyway, I’ll do my best for Hizuki-san as well.”
“…Do as you please.”
With that, I push my doubts to the back of my mind and address Hizuki-san again.
Her response is still aloof, but her voice seems a bit softer, or is it just my imagination?
It must be my imagination, right?
And so, the day of the tea party was finally approaching…
