Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Wounds Exchanged
If it were any other two or even three members of the Black Order, Carol could have dispatched them with a casual slap. But here, restraint was at play; Ebony Maw was proving even more troublesome for her than Thanos himself.
In fact, Thor was the best suited to handle Ebony Maw. With his ability to summon lightning from the sky without moving a muscle, he could blast through any psychic defenses. A bolt thick as a tree trunk would break Ebony Maw's defenses with one hit, seriously wound him with two, and likely kill him with three.
Meanwhile, Thor's battle with Thanos was escalating, as their clashing weapons sent shockwaves through the air. With a thunderous burst, Thor charged Gungnir with electricity, instantly enveloping it in a fierce, blinding light. The metallic clashes rang out, deafening anyone nearby, and the unleashed energy shattered anything within range, sending debris and fragments flying in every direction.
Against a lesser foe—like the Hulk—Thor's lightning-charged strikes could likely end the fight quickly. But against Thanos, it was different. Thor was on the defensive, slowly being worn down by Thanos' overwhelming power.
Thanos wielded the Overlord's Blade, also called the Tyrant's Blade, a weapon rumored to have come from the hands of the dwarves before it ended up with him after many battles. Though Gungnir was equally powerful, or perhaps even superior in terms of magic, it wasn't a perfect match for Thor's current strength. If not for Thanos' caution, wary of any magic tricks Thor might try, Thor could already have lost.
In the thick of battle, Thanos saw an opening and slashed downward at Thor's leg, hoping to cripple him and gain a decisive advantage.
Clang!
Instead of the expected cut, the blade met a surprising resistance, producing only the sound of metal striking metal. Thor's skin remained unbroken—thanks to Man of Steel, a skill Thor had almost forgotten about because so few enemies ever managed to strike him directly. Even the Overlord's Blade, capable of tearing through Vibranium, left only a faint scratch. According to Thor's calculations, only a full-force blow from Thanos could hope to injure him.
For a brief moment, Thanos looked shocked. As far as he knew, no Asgardian possessed such physical resilience. In fact, no one in the entire universe had a body this impervious except...
Most others, like Odin or Captain Marvel, relied on energy fields for protection, while Thor's endurance came from sheer physical toughness.
Opportunity!
While Thanos was momentarily stunned, Thor lunged forward, Gungnir thrusting towards Thanos' neck. Thanos managed to retreat, dodging the worst of it, but Thor pressed forward, piercing his chest with the spear. Gungnir embedded itself three inches deep—not enough to reach Thanos' heart, but enough to draw blood.
Roaring in anger, Thanos swung his blade toward Thor. Thor tried to withdraw Gungnir but found it lodged too tightly. With the blade speeding towards him, he had only enough time to raise his fists in defense.
BOOM!
The explosion knocked Gungnir from its place, sending it flying across the battlefield. Thor was thrown back, tumbling through the air before landing tens of meters away, his arm throbbing in pain. Glancing down, he saw two bleeding gashes on his arm. Ignoring the pain, he summoned a thick lightning bolt, striking the Tyrant's Blade and sending it spinning out of Thanos' grasp.
Thor looked up to see Thanos' chest, blood pouring from the wound. Thanos was relentless—ruthless not only toward others but toward himself. Thor realized what had happened; when he couldn't pull Gungnir free, it was because Thanos had trapped it between his ribs, launching a brutal counterattack in the process.
Thor's own injuries were minor compared to Thanos' wound, yet Thanos had managed to turn the tide and disarm him. With the spear under his control, Thor could have dealt a fatal blow, but Thanos had calculated each move to minimize the damage.
The Dwarf King Eitri, watching from behind, could hardly believe his eyes.
When he first saw that only Thor and Wanda were standing against Thanos, he'd assumed Asgard was doomed. In his mind, they were underestimating the enemy and walking into certain death. But Thor, Wanda, and the mysterious glowing woman who'd joined the fight were far stronger than he'd anticipated.
For a moment, as Gungnir pierced Thanos, Eitri thought it was over. But Thanos' resilience was beyond anything he could have imagined.
