Chapter 335: An Accident
Blake turned to face Fleur, who stood frozen in shock at the scene before her.
"Now, Miss Delacour, do you still think we're in danger?" he asked, his tone composed but with a hint of a challenge. Fleur's gaze travelled to the various magical beasts surrounding them, powerful creatures she had only read about in books, creatures whose very presence exuded danger and strength. These weren't simple familiars but beasts of immense power. The sight left her in awe, yet it also unsettled her to see so many of them under the control of one young wizard.
She'd heard of people taming horned camels or minor magical animals, but the creatures around Blake were leagues beyond that. Venom leopards and chimeras prowled around him—beasts notorious for their lethal instincts, their ferocity untamable. The very idea of anyone attempting to tame them, let alone succeeding, was astonishing.
Then, her gaze landed on an enormous, colorful spider. Her breath caught as she realized what she was looking at. In her studies, she had seen descriptions and sketches, but never had she thought she'd encounter one in real life.
"An Acromantula…?" she whispered, barely able to speak, eyes wide with astonishment. Acromantulas were among the most dangerous creatures, known for their aggression and intelligence. It was said they could never be tamed, yet here one stood, docile and seemingly awaiting Blake's command. She tried to wrap her mind around the idea, but it defied all logic.
Blake's voice brought her back to reality. "Mademoiselle Delacour?" he asked again, his calm tone tinged with a hint of amusement. Fleur shook her head, pulling herself out of her shock.
"So...these are your pets?" she asked, struggling to sound composed, though her voice trembled slightly despite her efforts.
Blake chuckled softly. "No, not pets—friends, Miss Delacour," he corrected her gently, the warmth in his tone unmistakable. "I don't think of them as pets. They're my companions, my allies." He gestured toward the various creatures around him.
"They're powerful, yes. But they're here to protect us. So, rest assured, you're safe."
Fleur looked around, a new sense of security settling in. Despite her fear, a strange calm washed over her in the presence of the powerful beasts. Being surrounded by them, she felt that she could indeed trust Blake's reassurance, and her fear gradually gave way to an unusual feeling of safety.
Blake continued, "Exactly. There's no need to be nervous. Just think of this as… a journey to another world. I'd have been on my own, reliving this experience solo, if you hadn't barged in," he added with a grin. "But since you're here…" He turned to the Acromantula, whom he fondly called
"Xiaocai." The spider's massive form loomed above them, its body nearly as large as a carriage.
With a swift movement, Blake gestured for Xiaocai to lower itself. The spider bent its long, hairy legs, forming a stable arc. Blake stepped onto Xiaocai's leg and easily climbed up onto its back. Then, he reached into his robes and drew out his wand, giving it a casual flick. In an instant, the air filled with delicate strands of spider silk, floating like snowflakes before weaving themselves into a soft, white blanket on Xiaocai's back. The remaining threads coalesced into a delicate canopy of spider silk, offering shade from the bright sunlight.
Once settled, Blake glanced down at Fleur and Cassandra, gesturing for them to join him. "Come on up," he said, patting the spot beside him.
Cassandra immediately approached the massive spider, showing no sign of hesitation. She placed a hand on one of Xiaocai's legs for support and climbed up next to Blake, her face alight with excitement. Her eyes sparkled as she took in the view from atop the giant spider; for her, this was a new adventure, a chance to experience something rare and thrilling.
Seeing Cassandra climb up so fearlessly, Fleur steeled herself. She had always prided herself on her courage, and she wasn't about to let it falter now. Summoning her nerve, she approached Xiaocai, carefully stepping onto its leg and pulling herself up onto the spider's back. She settled herself on the other side of the canopy, leaving a polite distance between herself and Blake.
Blake smiled encouragingly, impressed by her determination. With a simple nod, he gave Xiaocai the signal to move forward. The spider rose, and the entire entourage of magical beasts began to follow.
As they moved, Blake raised his arm and summoned a bluebird. Within moments, a brilliant blue phoenix appeared, landing gracefully on his arm. Its feathers shimmered in the sunlight, and its long, delicate tail feathers brushed lightly against Fleur's arm.
"Ah! I thought I wouldn't be able to summon you here," Blake said with a grin, speaking to the bird. The phoenix chirped in response, its call soft and melodic.
"Huh? You've been hiding in my suitcase all along? And the giant owl nearly suffocated in there?" he said, laughing as he pulled out a small suitcase from his cloak.
Opening it, he released his giant owl, who emerged with an irritated look, feathers ruffled from being cramped inside.
"Alright, alright. Don't be mad. Go on, you and the phoenix can scout ahead," Blake said, patting the owl gently. The bird gave a dignified nod before flying off, with the blue phoenix trailing close behind.
Fleur's eyes followed the phoenix, unable to tear her gaze away. She leaned closer to Blake, curiosity overtaking her earlier hesitation.
"Blake…is that bird really a phoenix? It looks like one, but I've never seen one in that colour," she said, her voice tinged with wonder.
Blake nodded. "Yes, she's a phoenix—a rare frost phoenix. Unlike the usual fire phoenix, she's ice-aligned. Not as common, but just as powerful."
Fleur's eyes widened as she processed this new information. An ice-aligned phoenix! She had only ever read about the fiery, red phoenixes in magical texts, creatures renowned for their ability to rise from the ashes. But this phoenix, with its ethereal blue plumage, seemed like something out of a dream.
A strange notification echoed in Blake's mind:
[Ding! Shocked mood swings detected! Congratulations, you've earned a silver treasure chest!]
Blake couldn't help but smile. It amused him to think that his knack for shocking others was earning him rewards, albeit in an unconventional way. Fleur, on the other hand, seemed lost in thought, as if trying to reconcile everything she thought she knew with the new reality Blake was presenting.
Looking around at the array of beasts following them, she couldn't shake the feeling of being outmatched. When she had been eleven, her proudest achievement had been topping her class in academics. But here was Blake, a young wizard who had somehow bonded with creatures that even seasoned wizards wouldn't dare to approach.
She let out a soft sigh, though a small smile graced her lips. "I have to admit…you're quite remarkable. Not even the great Newt Scamander could control creatures like these. I've never met a wizard quite like you," she admitted, her tone softer, more sincere. Despite her initial distrust, a flicker of admiration sparked within her.
Blake acknowledged her compliment with a slight nod, his expression warm. Fleur could sense a shift in her feelings toward him. The intimidating aura he once had now felt more like a protective presence, a sense of security she hadn't anticipated.
Taking advantage of the moment, Fleur remembered her reason for seeking Blake out. "Blake…my sister Gabrielle has been talking about you non-stop since you two met. She won't stop asking about you or asking to see you again. Did you…do something to her?" She watched him intently, her brow furrowed in genuine concern.
Blake felt his face flush slightly. He'd anticipated this question, especially after researching how the Poke Ball he used might have affected Gabrielle.
As it turned out, the Poke Ball couldn't tame a human with partial Veela blood like Fleur. But Gabrielle, being younger and more susceptible, had been unintentionally affected, creating a strange attachment to Blake.
"Well…" he began, searching for the right words. "I have a natural affinity for magical creatures. I think the day I met Gabrielle, that affinity might have affected her. She's young, and maybe she was more susceptible to the energy. It was an accident," he explained, hoping his words would be enough.
After a thoughtful silence, Fleur sighed, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. "Alright. Then…is there a way to remove that effect?" she asked, hopeful.
Blake nodded. "I can see Gabrielle one last time and explain to her why we can't meet again. With time, I think she'll move on."
Fleur nodded, reassured, and unconsciously shifted closer to him, the distance between them diminishing as her wariness faded. Cassandra, watching the two from across the spider's back, noticed this and bit her lip, her expression hardening as Fleur moved closer to Blake.
