Happry Potter: The New Player

Chapter 37: The Quest for Truth

Very few individuals are as wise as Dumbledore. The news about Penelope and Moaning Myrtle spread throughout the school.

Rumors spread, making everyone suspicious.

Even the ghosts were a bit frightened, wondering what kind of power could truly harm a ghost.

During this time, several students bought items to protect themselves. Evan saw Neville Longbottom purchase a giant onion, an amethyst, and a decomposed salamander tail.

As a result, the other Gryffindor boys told him he was not in danger because he was pure-blood, so he should not be attacked.

"They started with Filch," Neville said with a fearful expression. "As you know, he was almost a squib."

Colin agreed with Neville's words. The amethyst Neville bought is said to protect against harm.

Pericles also behaved rather abnormally.

His arm was already healed, but seeing Penelope petrified horrified him. He was not interested in trying to maintain order in the common room; he simply sat alone in front of the fire every night, unsure of what to think.

Ginny seemed to be worse than Percy; she had been preoccupied lately.

Several times she crossed paths with Evan looking quite pale, as if she wanted to say something but ultimately remained silent.

After Evan kept asking what was wrong, she relented. She told him that she had been having nightmares every night, dreaming of Harry, Evan, and another Weasley family member being murdered by the monster in the chamber, which greatly troubled her.

Evan comforted her for a while, unsure if Ginny felt this way because she had realized she was being influenced by Tom Riddle.

She told him that Ron, Ginny, and the twins left the hospital soon after he departed, but they split up, so he did not know if she went to the third-floor bathroom during that time.

The situation was so dire that the first-years now always stuck together, as if they were afraid that acting alone would make them targets. Only Colin wanted to be with Evan. Wherever he went, there was always someone pointing at him.

He received the same treatment as Harry and Hermione. People kept their distance from the three as if they were serial killers.

The prime suspect remained Harry, with young wizards even providing a reason. It was that Moaning Myrtle offended Harry at Nearly Headless Nick's birthday party and ran back to the bathroom after talking to Harry. The girls had seen Harry attempting to enter the bathroom, suspecting he was caught by Penelope and decided to kill her.

Following this rumor, Hogwarts' magical newspaper had a record low sale; the latest edition only sold 300 copies.

No one wanted to purchase a newspaper from a suspected criminal until their innocence was proven. All the energy of the young wizards was focused on the Chamber of Secrets; they were no longer interested in Quidditch matches.

The only benefit of the attack was that Ron was willing to speak to Evan again.

It might be because Evan's spell impacted Percy and made him think Evan was on his side, or because the Chamber of Secrets had reopened, and he realized the significance of these matters and thought it was not the right time to act that way.

They huddled in a corner of the common room for several consecutive nights and whispered.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione agreed they had missed the chance to obtain a crucial clue. Moaning Myrtle might have known something, but she was now out of the picture.

Evan knew where and how to open the Chamber of Secrets, but he was not ready for battle and did not know where Tom Riddle was hiding.

"There is something amiss in our way of thinking."

Ron felt slightly perplexed, "Who among us thinks that Muggles are rubbish?"

"Malfoy?"

"Of course it's him! Look at his ugly face," said Ron, "And the house-elf that attacked you was one of theirs."

"Yes, Dobby mentioned the Chamber and the plot. But we can't be certain that Malfoy is the heir of Slytherin," Hermione said.

"Come on, Hermione!" said Harry, "Look at the family, they are all in Slytherin. He could very well be a descendant of Slytherin since his father is wicked enough."

"They could have had the key to the Chamber of Secrets for centuries!" Ron exclaimed, "It was probably passed down from generation to generation, from father to son."

"It's possible..." Hermione said cautiously, "Evan, what do you think?"

"Malfoy should know something if he is the heir."

Evan had to find Tom's diary and pay attention to Ginny; asking Draco Malfoy directly was a good approach.

Lucius probably did not disclose his plans to Draco, but there might be some clues if they were in contact with some other Hogwarts student who was not a Weasley; as long as there's a lead, it will narrow down his search.

"Evan is so predictable, but the question is how can we make Malfoy tell the truth?" Harry said pessimistically.

"I have a solution!" Hermione said slowly, casting a quick look around to ensure no one was listening, lowering her voice, "Of course, it's not easy, it's very dangerous, we're going to break at least fifty school rules."

"Don't be secretive if you want to tell us," Ron said impatiently.

"We need to enter the Slytherin common room and ask Malfoy some questions without him recognizing us," Hermione suggested calmly.

"It's impossible," Harry and Ron chuckled.

"No, it's possible!" Evan stated with narrowed eyes, "If we brew the Polyjuice Potion."

"What's that?" Harry and Ron asked in unison.

"Polyjuice Potion," Hermione said a little surprised, "How did you know about it, Evan?"

"I read in books that this potion can transform you into another person." (N/B: What's funny is he's not lying.)

"Yes, we can turn into Slytherin students. Malfoy won't know it was us and perhaps will confide in us," Hermione proposed, "He's probably in the Slytherin common room bragging; it's a shame we can't eavesdrop."

"This potion seems rather peculiar."

Ron asked, frowning, "What if we turn into Slytherin students and never return to normal?"

"The effect will wear off after some time," Hermione replied a bit impatiently, "Snape said the potion is in a book called Most Potent Potions in the restricted section of the library. But it shouldn't be a problem; Professor Lockhart should be willing to sign a note for us to get it."

"That guy signs anything," Ron muttered.

"The issue now is the raw materials; we should be able to get them from Snape's personal stash."

"Hermione, that's very risky; Snape is not Lockhart, we can't easily get it from him," Harry hesitated.

"But..."

"This is not a problem; we can use the proceeds from the Hogwarts magic newspaper to buy the herbs. And we can use the third-floor girls' bathroom to brew the potion."

"Oh, no!" Ron said weakly, while Harry's expression turned serious.

"It's the safest place as Filch is no longer patrolling it. After the two attacks, no one is willing to go near the corridor."

In addition to potion-making, Evan was ready to take risks.

He will be right at the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets; whoever is controlling Tom, as long as they want to enter the Chamber of Secrets, they will have to get past him.

Evan also wants to see, will it be the same as in the original plot, and will he find Tom's diary there?
