Chapter 13 - Feast of Red Dragons

Once on the fifth floor, the air changes drastically. Perhaps it was because the fourth floor was cold, but the air felt unusually warm. It was originally cold in the dungeon with no sunlight, so it was better to be warm than cold.

“Well, I wonder what I’m going to find on this floor….”

When I entered the first large room, I found a huge lizard of a dull reddish-red color waiting for me.

It stared at me with red eyes.

“Ah!”

It wasn’t a lizard at all, but more like a dragon, albeit without wings. It was a lesser dragon.

I winced, but it was better to fight it in a big room. I changed my weapon to my samurai sword and jumped into the main room.

Roar!

The lesser dragon let out a sharp cry and opened its fangs to bite me.

No one in their right mind would take a bite attack head-on, then I swiftly dodged its furious claw strikes and maneuvered around it.

These lower-tier dragons aren’t particularly fast.

While their bodies are covered in tough scales, if you keep circling around and kept slashing, they aren’t that formidable of foes.

I relentlessly circled around its flank, slashing away.

The Lesser Dragon writhed in pain as its skin was sliced apart. It attempted to bite me with its sharp fangs, swipe at me with its knife-like claws, or attack me with its large tail, but I wasn’t foolish enough to take those attacks head-on.

Ultimately, their biggest weakness is their sluggish and monotonous movements and their enormous size. No wonder dinosaurs went extinct.

Writhing in pain, there were moments when its massive body nearly came crashing down on me, but I jumped away to avoid being crushed.

With my current capabilities, even if I were crushed, it wouldn’t kill me. As long as I didn’t die, I could use a health potion to recover, so it wasn’t a big deal.

I quickly got back up and resumed a hit-and-run strategy.

Whenever I slice through the skin of the Lesser Dragon, red scales fly off and are gradually joined by a spray of reddish-black blood.

Despite its ferocious size, it is a small fry that can only attack with its sharp fangs and tough tail. It is not a foe that cannot be defeated if one fights calmly and aggressively, without being intimidated by its size.

I was glad to realize that my footwork was much better than when I had fought the Mustard Dragon before.

Compared to me from back then, my speed and power are on a completely different level. I’m no longer the person I was at that time.

“Come on, it’s time to die!”

“Gaah!”

I didn’t aim for it, but deep within the place where my sword plunged, there might have been a fatal organ.

With a final, agonizing scream, flames shot out from the dragon’s mouth and disappeared, much like when a candle’s flame is blown out.

Its movements slowed immediately, and the Lesser Dragon collapsed with a thud, curling its massive body.

It had breathed its last.

“There’s no way I can handle them one after another.”

If these creatures were to surround me from all sides, I wouldn’t stand a chance.

Though I’ve grown compared to before, I’m still not strong enough, neither in my fighter rank nor my weapons, to defeat a dragon in a single blow.

“Well, I can still get stronger, that’s for sure.”

I’m happy with how I am right now.

Now, let’s have a meal. I’ve heard that dragon meat is mild and delicious, so I’m looking forward to it.

Because of their massive size, it’s a bit challenging, but I’ll roughly drain the blood by piercing their hearts or decapitating them.

I don’t mind the taste of the monster’s blood, but it is a dragon steak, and I want to taste the meat in the best condition possible.

“Maybe I’ll try grilling it occasionally.”

I carefully trim away the tough scales and cut the delicious flank into appropriately sized pieces, skewering them on my sword.

I roast it on a fire pit made of stones I found.

“This is a wonderful treat!”

What can I say about the taste of dragon steak? It has the light taste of chicken, but the texture of beef.

It’s quite similar to the flavor of reptilian meat, much like the alligator I tried at the outdoor cultural museum during a school field trip.

Lesser dragons, with their sluggish movements, high health, and tough scales, make for ideal sparring partners to hone a warrior’s skills.

Moreover, they come in such large sizes that they are like walking food reserves, making them incredibly convenient creatures.

I’ll diligently continue to exterminate them and use this opportunity for thorough combat training.

**

After eating enough dragon flesh and training myself well, I decided to move on. A stone statue of a demon awaits me.

It’s a gargoyle. When you get close, it starts moving and launches an attack.

From a distance, I shot several fireballs at it.

Then, it hastily attacks me, and I strike it down with my samurai sword, to counter.

If you remain calm and deal with it, it’s not that formidable of an enemy.

The gargoyle, decapitated, crumbles to the floor in pieces, its body reduced to stone again.

I feel myself getting stronger.

This path is one I’ve repeated dozens of times, playing through GenoReal.

Certainly, getting slashed hurts so much that you want to scream and run away, and being burned by flames is excruciating.

These realistic sensations are a hindrance, but once you have developed a strong spirit to endure even the torments of hell and move forward and wield the sword, it is no different from playing a game.

The task at hand is straightforward and simple.

Killing results in just that, death. While I can only become even stronger.

The fifth-floor boss, the Mustard Dragon, awaits ahead after passing through a corridor of gargoyles guarding the boss.

It is the same species as the one I faced in the first-floor ‘invasion’, but unlike the normal species that hang around on the sixth floor, the fifth-floor boss, the Mustard Dragon, has a high level of intelligence.

It is not a young dragon of the lower class, but a mature dragon that has survived for a long time and gained intelligence.

A mature Mustard Dragon.

Dragons are a species that takes time to mature.

The longer they live and the more intelligence they gain, the stronger they become. In game terms, they have different thinking routines. Simple tricks won’t work, and they adapt to your movements.

“But with my current rank, I can do it!”

Prepared and with a steady breath, I slowly opened the stone wall blocking the boss’s room.

GenoReal is undoubtedly a brutal murder game.

Even so, it’s a game.

Reality sometimes seems to mock human efforts by closing its gates, but games don’t betray human efforts.

If you input things correctly, it will give you the output you deserve. It’s a pure, simple, and beautiful world.

That’s why I love it. If you do what you can, you will never lose.

“An adventurer coming this far, that’s unusual.”

I heard an elderly voice like an old man’s as I entered the boss’s room.

The same venomous purple mustard dragon I had fought on the first floor.

Its fierce gaze held the hue of intellect.

Its scaled skin looks a bit dull, and its body is about twice as large. It’s a dragon that has reached the peak of maturity over a long period of time.

“Yes, I am a risk taker. I’m here to kill you!”

“Hmph, you little pipsqueak. Fine, have at it.”

It seems it won’t resort to cheap tricks and sneak attacks.

The gigantic mature dragon slowly raised its heavy body, swaying, and lifted its neck toward me.

I don’t intend to engage in lengthy conversations with the opponent I’m about to fight.

It seems It feels the same way, as we exchanged stares, understanding each other’s intent. A head-on battle. In my mind, the bell of combat rang.

“Uraaaaah!”

“Guffaaa!”

The mature dragon directed its jaws towards me and spewed out a venomous breath.

I skillfully evaded it with the Mantle of Diminishing and swung my sword.

The basic strategy was to circle around, but the Samurai Sword that I thrust into the enemy’s neck was stopped by its tough scales with a crisp sound.

I see, they are quite hard.

Sidestepping, I aimed for the relatively soft-looking flank, and the massive dragon rolled over with its full weight crashing down on me.

A huge dragon was falling toward me.

Anyone would have been afraid, horrified, and in a panic would have tried to run away.

Nonetheless, this instant presented the sole opportunity amid imminent demise.

Amidst the abyss of death, I dared to advance.

I charged forward with my sword, not dodging the dragon’s huge body.

I scream in pain as I’m crushed, my limbs almost falling apart.

No, this was no longer just pain. I screamed as if I intended to, but my voice didn’t even come out.

But I used its weight and momentum to thrust my samurai sword deep into the Mustard Dragon’s body.

I could have pierced the dragon’s vital points with a single thrust, which I had studied during my training in dragon combat.

“Guaaaaaaaargh!”`

The Mustard Dragon screams and spits out a poisonous breath from its mouth. Probably not consciously.

The section I had pierced was the dragon’s breath sac, a reservoir brimming with a cocktail of toxic chemicals now running wild within the dragon’s body.

Although they possessed the ability to unleash formidable breath attacks, such as deadly poison or fiery explosions, dragons in this realm harbored a peculiar vulnerability.

If their breath sacs were punctured, they would succumb to their own toxic emissions.

The more potent the poison, the more they would endure the effects of self-poisoning.

I thought ‘serves you right’, but I couldn’t afford to say it. I’m still under the dragon’s massive body.

“Damn, he’s thrashing around on my body!”

The intense pain all over my body was still tolerable, but I couldn’t feel my left arm from a while ago. It seemed like the bones below my shoulder were completely shattered. Perhaps the ligaments had been completely severed

I managed to find an opening using only my right arm, and crawled out from under the dragon’s crushing weight.

I pulled out a health potion from my backpack lying on the floor and drank it down.

I was far from fully recovered, but the pain that shredded my flesh and creaked my bones with every movement had subsided. It seems that even an intermediate level health potion is effective enough to connect the bones.

I gave up on my samurai sword, which was still under the dragon, and got up, pulling my spirit sword out of my backpack.

“That helped a little, Mustard Dragon!”

“Cough, quite impressive… you aimed for the poison inside me!”

My opponent was an intelligent enemy, and it wouldn’t suffer for long.

I jumped on top of the flailing dragon’s huge body with my spirit sword in hand and stabbed it with all my might.

Perhaps this is the dragon’s heart.

“Geh…”

The Mustard Dragon curled up and stopped moving, spitting blood from its mouth.

I was momentarily frozen, too.

I’m not dead, but my body still trembles with intense pain, and my head feels dizzy.

Once the moment of desperation passes, the intense pain came back as if it were a relapse.

I grit my teeth and bear the pain.

Come on, the pain is proof that I’m alive.

“Ouch… you damn beast… Hahaha!”

Even the excruciating pain that felt like my body was about to crumble into pieces was an unbearable pleasure for me right now.

I’m content knowing I managed to conquer such a formidable and overpowering adversary on my own. It’s the sensation of truly being alive, a feeling that becomes most apparent in the face of extreme adversity. It’s an indescribable celebration of life.

In the treasure chest of the fifth-floor boss, as if to congratulate me, is a large samurai sword.

It is a weapon for the Samurai class with the strongest slashing power, a nodachi called ‘Solitude’.

The name “Solitude” comes from the fact that the blade is made of meteoric iron.

The sword is made from a plate of meteoric iron that has flown to the earth over 200 million years, and it will never bend, and the blade will never break.

The sword’s cutting power increases with the strength of its owner, and eventually, it becomes the most powerful weapon ever made, capable of cutting down anything.

Therefore, even though it can be obtained on the fifth floor, it is a great sword that can be used until the very end.

When you play alone as a Samurai, the “Solitude” usually appears at this point.

This is the one-of-a-kind rare weapon that appears as a condition for defeating a Dragon on your own in this world.

Slowly drawing the sword from its black scabbard adorned with decorative cords reveals a blade with considerable length, nearly a meter long.

Describing it as a “Nodachi,” “O-Tachi,” or even a “Zanbato” might be the most straightforward comparison.

It was a long, strong, and broad sword used by the samurai of the Kamakura period to show off their mighty prowess.

This type of sword was used to cut down a warrior and his horse, but it was more convenient to have a sword as long as this when dealing with giant dragons and other powerful creatures.

Incidentally, because it is so long, it cannot be pulled out of its sheath if it is placed at the waist.

Like a ninja, I have to carry it on my back, gripping the koiguchi while pulling it out. In the labyrinth, where vigilance is crucial, the sword will likely remain drawn from its long scabbard.

“Either way, it was nice to have a new weapon.”

I tried to pull out the old Samurai Sword that had been pinned beneath the Mustard Dragon, but it seemed it had reached its limit in the previous intense battles, as the blade had snapped cleanly.

If I hadn’t found a new weapon here, I would have had to return for sure.

Rather than being lucky, I felt like I was favored by the god of slaughter.

I felt pushed by some greater force, urging me to cut more, to kill more.

I placed the Samurai Sword, my loyal companion in battle until now, on a shelf on the wall.

And with the new companion, Solitude, on my back, I moved forward.

“I’ll show them.”

In the treasure chest, there were gems and gold coins. And I acquired the ‘Dragon Key’.

I had finally made it this far, and the path to the sixth floor was opening up.
