Chapter 34: 34. Relapsed Problem
The next day, Alex calls Ur, but it doesn't connect. This is the problem with portable magic communication devices. They are small, so they are easy to carry, but their signal receivers are bad.
Those things are like bad old radio that have bad signal receivers. They need to be in high places or clear areas to get good signals. Things like rain, tall buildings, tall trees, and other things can disrupt the signals.
It will be even harder if the distance between the caller and the receiver is really far, which most likely be the case now because Ur and Ultear might have traveled really far.
Fortunately, the magic communication devices can be used to send messages as well. But because Ur only carries a small portable communication device, the message she can receive is short.
So Alex only sends the code number of his communication device with his name beside it and a sentence that tells them to call him at night to make sure he isn't out working when they call.
This way, Ur and Ultear can call him when they're free at night after receiving the message and when they find a good place where the signal is good for their small portable device.
It doesn't take too long for them to call Alex. They call him immediately that night, which means they receive the message not long after he sent it.
[Hey, Alex, can you hear me?] Ur asks through the lacrima crystal communication device.
"Yeah, the video is blurry and the voice is quite low, but it's clear."
[Good. Are you with Gray and Lyon?]
"Gray is here, but Lyon wanted to do his own thing and decided to find a different Guild. I'm sure he'll be alright. Don't worry, I will inform you when I get the news about him."
[I see. Please look after each other, alright. So I guess you've read the letter.]
"Yeah, is she alright?"
[What is it? Do you miss me?] Ultear answers it instead. But her voice sounds quite weak.
[She has a fever again, but it's not that bad because she has used a lot of her magic power today.] Ur tells Alex about Ultear's condition.
"Where are you now?"
[We are in Seven. Trading is the life of this country and they sell almost everything. So I hope to find something like advanced magic books in the market. The chance is slim for something like that to be traded publicly, but it's our best chance to get it without relying on big forces like big Guilds or Nations because they will demand a lot of things.]
"Right, and even if you can't find the magic books, you can try to buy information about them in Seven because they sell almost everything be they items or information."
[Eh? I didn't even think of that. I see, so we can do that too.]
".... Just be careful when buying information because you can't verify the truth immediately. Or rather, you better not try to buy information at all. I don't want to say this but, you are someone that can be fooled easily, Ur."
Even Gray and Ultear agree with Alex. Ur is quite naive and easy to fool. It will be even easier now because it involves Ultear's well being, so she will seize every chance even if it's very suspicious.
"Just focus on looking for advanced magic books because you can verify them immediately with your knowledge and experience. I will try to ask my Guild Master and our strongest Mage about it too and maybe ask them to help us find information about advanced magic. Master is a Wizard Saint, so I'm sure he knows a lot more than normal Mages like us."
[Oh, right, your Guild Master is Makarov Dreyar, one of the 10 Wizard Saints. He really should know a lot more or at least know people that know about this. But are you sure he will help? While you are his Guild member, Ultear and I are complete strangers to him.]
"Don't worry, he is a kind person, I'm sure he will help if I ask."
[That will be great if he really helps. I will forever be indebted to him if he can help us find the cure.]
They talk about a few more things other than the way to cure Ultear like Alex's improvements and his life in the Guild. Ultear also talks about how annoying Gray and Lyon were, so she's glad they have left now.

Fairy Tail's S-Class exam lasts for a week. The candidates, examiners, and the staff finally return now. As Alex thought, no one passes the exam this year and the candidates return with disappointed faces.
"Master, there's someone who wants to join the Guild." Alex brings Gray to Makarov while the Guild celebrates the end of the S-Class exam.
"Oh? Another child.... But why's he naked?" Even the nonchalant Makarov is surprised by Gray's naked habit.
"Ah?! Since when?" As usual, even Gray himself doesn't realize he has stripped his clothes.
"Sorry about this, Master. He's my fellow disciple who really learned our Master's magic, unlike me. His stripping habit comes from our training. We always strip our clothes every day when we train in the snowy mountain and somehow this guy still does it instinctively here."
"..... Well, as long as he keeps his underwear."
Makarov finally approves Gray's application and tells Alex to teach Gray the basics. He also puts Gray in Alex's team, so now they have 3 members who are the youngest in the Guild.
After they're done with Gray's registration, Alex asks Makarov if they can talk privately tomorrow. The old man has just returned, so Alex doesn't want to disturb him today.
"Alright, let's talk tomorrow morning." Makarov knows it must be something important, so he agrees.
The next day, Alex tells Gray and Cana to take a job together in the town. He won't join them because he has something important to do. They agree and take a simple job for Gray's 1st job in the Guild.
Meanwhile, Alex meets Makarov in the Guild Master office. It's the best place to have a private talk and no one will disturb them here.
Makarov asks what Alex wants to talk about and he immediately tells the old man about Ultear. There's no need to talk about it in a roundabout way. It's better to just tell Makarov the truth and ask for advice.
"I see, she has more magic power than what her body can handle, huh? Strengthening her magic container and magic circuits seems to be the correct answer. Normally, our magic container and circuits will strengthen automatically as we grow stronger. But it seems her magic power grows too fast so her body can't keep up. Your teacher is right, learning advanced magic can help grow her magic container and circuits, especially Ancient Magic."
"Ancient Magic?"
"Have you heard something like Dragon Slayer Magic?"
"Yeah, Laxus told me he has Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic."
"Laxus told you? I don't realize you are that close." Makarov is surprised to know that Alex and Laxus are close.
"Well, we just talk a lot and often train together."
Makarov smiles hearing that. "I see, that's good. Anyway, Dragon Slayer Magic is an Ancient Magic. Laxus body was weak back then, but he has grown much stronger after his father implanted a Lightning Dragon Lacrima in his body. Now don't ask me where to find a Dragon Lacrima because I don't know. But most Ancient Magic that we know can affect their users' bodies and make them stronger, so it's worth a try. But if it's too hard to find, then this age's advanced Magic should help too."
"Do you know a way to find any Magic that can help, Master? My teacher said she will do anything if you can help. Well, maybe not really anything, only good things."
"Sorry, but I don't know any way to obtain such magic now. I will try to ask my acquaintances to see if they can help though, so don't worry."
Alex is clearly disappointed that even Makarov doesn't know how to obtain the needed magic because not any Advanced Magic will work. But Makarov's help to find information about it is enough for now.
Makarov has much better connections than even Ur, so the chance of him finding what they need is much higher. Hopefully, they will get good news soon so Ultear won't need to suffer again.
