"Please, don't be angry, General Budo!" Mellie called out, stepping forward from the front rank of the assembled officials. A playful smile graced her lips as she continued, "Your contributions have been instrumental in our success thus far!"
A truly cutting remark, Mika thought,
He hadn't expected Mellie's words to be so sharp, so venomous, especially when facing an opponent.
Mika quickly glanced at General Budo. As expected, the general's face was contorted, his eye twitching uncontrollably.
Just as Mellie had said, General Budo had provided invaluable assistance in the early stages of their plan.
Whether it was overthrowing Prime Minister Honest, establishing the secret police force, or consolidating control over the civil and military officials, General Budo's support had been essential.
In a sense, he deserved a great deal of credit for their current success. And that was precisely why he was so furious.
"You deceived me! You betrayed my trust! And now you brand me a traitor! You deserve to die!" Budo spat, his eyes locked onto Mellie.
He raised his arm, and the air crackled with energy.
Rumble!
Dark thunderclouds gathered above the palace, lightning flashing within their depths. The entire structure seemed to vibrate with the building electrical charge.
"It seems General Budo has lost his patience," Mika remarked calmly, observing the unfolding scene. "Given his control over the palace, I imagine the gates are already sealed."
Turning to the assembled officials, he continued, "I suggest you leave now and seek shelter elsewhere in the palace."
"This place will soon become a battlefield. If you remain here, you might not live to see the outcome."
Heeding Mika's warning, the ministers exchanged nervous glances before fleeing the hall.
Those remaining – Mika on the throne, Mellie and Budo standing below, Esdeath and her Three Beasts, along with a few military commanders – remained motionless, watching each other, waiting for the officials to clear out.
Regardless of who emerged victorious, these officials would be crucial for stabilizing the Empire.
Therefore, Budo had no intention of harming them.
Soon, only a handful of people remained in the grand hall.
"Surely you have more than just these few? Where is the woman who commands your secret force? I believe she has several Teigu users under her command," Budo stated, his gaze sweeping over those present.
"Are you referring to me, General?" Airmid's voice echoed from behind them.
Budo whirled around to see Airmid entering the hall, accompanied by three figures: Tatsumi, Wave, and Kurome.
Beyond them, stationed outside, stood one hundred elite members of the Night Crow, facing off against Budo's soldiers.
Clad in full body armor, their faces concealed by helmets, they exuded an aura of disciplined power that sent shivers down the spines of the opposing soldiers.
"You were prepared for this?" Budo's brow furrowed.
"Indeed. Mika anticipated your intentions, General. That's why he allowed you to approach General Esdeath and orchestrated this confrontation," Airmid explained, walking past Budo and Esdeath. "Are you worried we'll use the 'Erastone' to disable your Teigu?"
"Don't worry, General. Your Teigu is quite a valuable collectible. We wouldn't dream of destroying it."
"So, you needn't concern yourself with such matters."
Budo's frown deepened. He hadn't realized he had walked right into their trap.
"Oh? Do you hold us in such low regard?" Esdeath finally spoke, a chilling smile on her face.
She seemed unfazed by the implied disrespect in Airmid's words. Such things held little significance for her.
"Low regard? Certainly not, General Esdeath," Airmid replied, shaking her head slightly.
"Even if we were to underestimate anyone, we would never underestimate you. In our plan, you are undoubtedly the most significant player."
"Therefore, an opponent of your caliber requires the attention of our Emperor himself."
With that, Airmid turned to Mika, who sat upon the throne.
"Indeed, Esdeath. Your opponent is me," Mika announced, rising slowly to his feet.
The illusion shrouding him shattered, revealing his true appearance to all present.
All eyes were on Mika's imposing figure. His enemies paid no attention to his handsome features, their gazes fixated on his powerful physique, radiating an aura of overwhelming strength.
A formidable foe! That was Esdeath's immediate assessment.
She had never encountered an opponent quite like him.
"Hmph! If you want to challenge Lady Esdeath, you'll have to get through us first!" The Three Beasts stepped forward, ready to defend their master.
"Indeed…"
"Silence!" Mika barked, cutting them off.
In his eyes, the Three Beasts weren't even worthy of interrupting his conversation with Esdeath.
A wave of killing intent erupted from Mika, washing over the entire hall.
Everyone present felt the malicious aura emanating from him. The Three Beasts bore the brunt of his power.
Overwhelmed by Mika's aura, they collapsed to their knees, gasping for air. Even breathing became agonizing under the oppressive force.
"Incredible! To exert such pressure with just presence!" Budo, unfamiliar with Nen, mistook Mika's aura for pure intimidation. This elevated his wariness of Mika to its maximum.
As Mika continued to suppress the Three Beasts, an ice spear shot towards him.
Mika sidestepped effortlessly, dodging the projectile.
"My subordinates are not so easily bullied!" Esdeath declared, a predatory smile on her face.
...
Outside the Imperial Capital. The Night Raid hideout.
Since their previous setback, Night Raid had remained inactive. This was partly due to their awaiting reinforcements from the Revolutionary Army and partly because they had found themselves with nothing to do.
While Night Raid was the Revolutionary Army's assassination and intelligence unit, their targets were always individuals guilty of heinous crimes.
Now, with Prime Minister Honest gone, numerous wrongful convictions had been overturned.
Many officials implicated in those cases had been removed from their positions and imprisoned.
Under Mellie's firm hand, the Imperial Capital's bureaucratic system had been cleansed.
The newly appointed officials were too afraid to act corruptly, and citizens flocked to file complaints, exposing illegal merchants and criminal organizations.
Of course, their newfound law-abiding nature was primarily due to the consequences of disobedience.
In the early days of Mellie's tenure, some officials still attempted to engage in corrupt practices. They would act impartially and justly in cases involving others but would abuse their power in matters related to themselves.
Such individuals often found themselves hanging from the gallows the following day.
The eyes of the secret police, the Night Raid, were constantly watching.
This was Night Raid's claim to fame.
Their vigilance ensured the current officials' adherence to the law.
No one knew if they were being watched, so everyone acted cautiously.
Wrongful convictions were overturned, criminals were apprehended, and the atmosphere in the capital improved significantly.
Under these circumstances, even if crimes occurred, they wouldn't escalate to the point of requiring Night Raid's intervention.
Those who held positions of power were, after all, intelligent individuals.
No one would dare to commit crimes during such a sensitive period.
As a result, Night Raid, whose purpose was to hunt down criminals, found themselves without a purpose in the Imperial Capital.
"Ugh, I'm so bored!" Mine groaned, slumping over the table.
Beside her, Leone guzzled her drink. Akame silently devoured her meat. Sheele stared blankly out the window. Lubbock leered at his magazine. And Bulat? Having finished his meal, he was exercising in the courtyard.
"There's nothing we can do about it. The boss is back at Revolutionary Army headquarters seeking reinforcements, and thanks to that Prime Minister Mellie, things are peaceful in the capital," Lubbock commented, his eyes glued to his magazine. "We simply have no reason to act."
"So when will this end?" Mine whined.
"Who knows? We can only wait and see."
"Mine, during these idle times, we should focus on training. There will be a time when we're needed again," Sheele advised.
"But will we really have any work left to do?" Mine asked, glancing at her companions. "With that Prime Minister Mellie in charge, the capital has undergone a complete transformation. There's no room for us to intervene."
"What are we supposed to do? Assassinate Prime Minister Mellie?" A hint of impatience colored her voice.
Night Raid's position was indeed awkward.
"Mine," Akame called out after finishing her meal.
"While it's true we're currently idle, isn't this what we've been striving for?" She looked at her companions, her expression serious. "I doubt anyone here is fighting for themselves."
"We fight for the citizens."
"So, if the people of the capital are now happy, why should we feel bored?"
Her words resonated with the others, who nodded in agreement.
As Akame said, none of them were fighting for personal gain.
With their Teigu and abilities, they could have easily joined the Revolutionary Army's main forces, serving as generals or other high-ranking officers.
If the revolution succeeded, they could have enjoyed positions of power and privilege in the new nation.
But they had chosen to join an assassination unit. Even if they succeeded in establishing a new nation, there would be no place for them in its government.
They were fully aware of this.
Just as Bulat had told Tatsumi, once the new nation was founded, they would vanish from the world, leaving this land behind.
Therefore, their dedication to fighting for the people was undeniable.
"Sorry, I was getting a little anxious," Mine apologized, resting her head back on the table.
The others smiled and returned to their respective activities.
"Roar!"
A Danger Beast's roar suddenly shattered the momentary peace.
The members of Night Raid, jolted from their relaxed state, rushed out of the hideout, their gazes fixed on the sky.
"That's..."
Quickly equipping her long-range goggles, Mine focused on the figure standing atop the Danger Beast.
"It's the boss! The boss is back!" she shouted excitedly.
She also noticed two cloaked figures standing behind Najenda.
"Are those reinforcements?" she wondered aloud.
Najenda's Danger Beast landed, and she approached the group, accompanied by the two mysterious figures.
"It's been a while, Boss!"
"It's good to see you all again, everyone!" Najenda greeted them with a smile.
"Who are these two?" Akame inquired, gesturing towards the cloaked figures.
"Oh, them?" Najenda turned and presented the two figures to the group. "This is Susanoo, a Human-type Teigu newly assigned to me by headquarters. And this is Chelsea, an assassin whose success rate rivals even Akame's."
"Hello, everyone!" Chelsea greeted them cheerfully.
After exchanging greetings, Najenda continued, "Since Prime Minister Mellie took office, she has been quite wary of the Revolutionary Army's presence in the south. She's replaced the governors of several southern counties."
"This is the most support headquarters can provide us with for now."
