Chapter 82: Chapter 82: The Silver Moon Fox
Chapter 82: The Silver Moon Fox
When Yang Potian woke up, his father, Yang Zhentian, was watching over him with concern.
"How long was I out?" Yang Potian asked, inspecting his injuries. "And what happened to me?"
Yang Zhentian, still cautious, explained, "Last night, we were targeted by a soul beast. You must have inhaled its aura, which trapped you in its illusion."
With that, he took a small white fox corpse out of his storage soul guide. The fox was only about a meter long, its fur pure silver without any blemishes, giving it an innocent, harmless appearance.
"This is a ten-thousand-year-old Silver Moon Fox," his father continued. "It hunts under the moonlight, and it can absorb lunar energy. This fox is the one that caught you off guard."
"Father, how could a fox be so powerful?" Yang Potian asked, shocked. "I'm almost at the Soul Elder level, and it still managed to deceive me?"
Yang Zhentian let out a cold laugh. "Soul Elder, you say? You're barely a Soul Master. This Silver Moon Fox's mental power is comparable to a high-level Soul King's."
"Silver Moon Foxes are naturally gifted with powerful spiritual abilities. They're highly sought after by spiritual-type soul masters. If I hadn't noticed in time last night, things might have gone very differently."
Yang Potian sighed, frustrated. "I underestimated the danger. This small creature is much more powerful than it seems. I guess I'll need to be even more cautious here in the Star Dou Forest."
"Yes, absolutely," his father replied. "The forest is full of hidden dangers. Some of these are hard to detect, like poison-based or mental-type beasts, which can kill without a trace. Even advanced soul masters can be easily caught off guard."
"I've always been reluctant to bring you here, because of the risks and the level of soul beasts you typically seek. I worried we'd be here for a long time."
Yang Potian apologized, "Father, I realize now that I underestimated the Star Dou Forest."
Yang Zhentian nodded. "There's nothing wrong with danger itself, Potian; it's only a problem if your heart isn't strong. Take this experience as a lesson. Facing spiritual attacks like this will help your own mental strength grow, and it'll prepare you for similar dangers in the future."
Yang Potian couldn't help but ponder his father's words. His life thus far had been protected; he hadn't faced many injuries or setbacks, so he hadn't developed the adaptability he might need.
Looking at his father, he wondered if perhaps Yang Zhentian had allowed the fox's attack to play out to teach him this lesson. After all, his father was a powerful Soul Douluo; he would've sensed a Soul King-level beast approaching.
With this thought in mind, Potian asked, "Father, I've noticed that no one in the Yang Clan has any area-of-effect skills."
"Correct. We rarely have soul masters with such abilities."
"Why is that? I know the Seven Kill Sword is also a top-tier weapon spirit, but it has several area-of-effect skills."
"Good observation," Yang Zhentian replied. "Weapon spirits come in many types. Our Soul Breaker Spear is a heavy weapon that's meant to be wielded with both hands, while the Seven Kill Sword is a lighter, single-handed weapon, making it more flexible."
"Part of Sword Douluo's strength in group attacks lies in his skill with the Seven Treasures Glazed Tile Clan's multi-tasking technique. The Seven Kill Sword itself is lighter, allowing him to control it more easily. In terms of group attacks, it does excel. But when it comes to single-target attacks, the Seven Kill Sword lacks the weight of a Clear Sky Hammer or our Soul Breaker Spear."
"You may also have heard of the Star Luo Empire's Wind Sword Sect. They use swords, but their weapon ranks below the Seven Kill Sword. Their focus is on flying sword techniques, which require a lightweight and nimble weapon."
Yang Potian nodded, a spark of understanding dawning on him. "So, if that's the case, our Soul Breaker Spear is unlikely to have many options for group attacks."
Yang Zhentian chuckled. "With weapons, you often have to choose between single-target and multi-target strength. The Seven Kill Sword is perhaps the most balanced of all, capable of both, and extremely well-rounded."
"Too bad," Yang Potian sighed. "I thought I could learn a cool area-of-effect skill like Sword Douluo's 'Ten Thousand Swords as One.'"
"Dream on, Potian," his father replied, laughing. "With the Soul Breaker Spear's weight and the path you've chosen to develop its power, you're on a different trajectory. Sword Douluo's technique lets him control multiple blades at once due to their lightness. Imagine how difficult it would be to wield even two Soul Breaker Spears."
Yang Potian sighed again, abandoning his visions of learning an awe-inspiring area attack. After a two-hour rest, the two continued their search in the Star Dou Forest's mixed zone.
The forest proved rich in resources, and in just half a day they encountered several promising soul beasts. They saw a Fire-Blooded Wild Rhinoceros and a Land Tyrant Bull, both excellent strength-focused choices, though a bit too ordinary for Potian's liking.
One sight in particular stirred Potian's heart: a 16,000-year-old Ironthorn Armored Dragon, a true gem among strength-type soul beasts. He was almost tempted to try absorbing it, even though it exceeded his tolerance limit. Had it been just over 10,000 years, he would have risked it, even if it meant using his Tranquil Bamboo Dew earlier than planned.
Reluctantly, he turned to his father. "Father, although dragon beasts usually live alone, some are known to live in small groups. Why don't we observe this Ironthorn Armored Dragon for a while? Perhaps it's with others."
"Let it go, Potian," his father advised. "Ironthorn Armored Dragons are indeed powerful, but these beasts are almost always solitary or in small family units. It's rare to find one among younger, thousand-year beasts, except for its own offspring."
"Star Dou Forest has plenty of other beasts for us to consider. Let's take note of its location and keep searching."
Yang Potian sighed, torn but resigned, as he followed his father away from the powerful dragon.
