Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The Tower of Secrets.
The tower stood imposingly, a black obsidian structure that seemed to absorb the sunlight. Every step towards it was charged with an unknown energy, as if the structure itself was examining their souls.
"It is… intimidating," Yue Lian admitted, feeling a chill as she looked at the inscriptions decorating the walls of the tower. They were ancient symbols that seemed to shift and move before her eyes.
"It is designed to intimidate," Xu Tian replied, his tone colder than usual. "But we cannot back down now."
Tang San touched one of the symbols curiously, feeling a faint vibration under his hand. "These characters… tell stories. They recount past battles and the sacrifices the chosen ones have made to get here."
"Then we are not the first to face this," Yue Lian muttered.
"No," Tang San replied, withdrawing his hand. "But perhaps we will be the first in a long time."
---
As they crossed the threshold of the tower, a blinding flash enveloped them, and as their eyes adjusted, they found they were in an intricate labyrinth. The walls were made of a dark crystal that reflected their images, but instead of faithfully replicating them, the mirrors showed distorted versions of themselves.
"This is no simple labyrinth," said Tang San, watching as his reflection seemed to grin malevolently.
"It's a test," added Xu Tian, unsheathing his sword. "And I don't plan on waiting for something to attack us first."
Yue Lian raised her bow, carefully observing the corridors that stretched out in all directions. "If this is a test, then there will be a correct path. We just need to find it."
"What if the mirrors are telling us something?" asked Tang San, frowning as he watched his reflection activate his spirit abilities in the crystals. "What if we must face what we see here?"
---
The First Obstacle: Dark Reflections
Before they could advance any further, the images in the mirrors began to move on their own, emerging from the crystals as tangible entities. Each faced a dark version of themselves.
Xu Tian clashed swords with his reflection, which seemed even more powerful and aggressive than him. Each blow echoed in the enclosed space, and for the first time, Xu Tian felt like he was fighting someone who could anticipate his every move.
"Is this who I really am?" he muttered under his breath, backing away from an attack.
"It is what you will become if you allow your ambitions to consume you," his reflection replied, its voice echoing in his mind.
Meanwhile, Yue Lian fired arrows at her own reflection, but each shot was replicated and countered with deadly precision. "I can't win if he keeps matching me," she thought, frustrated.
Tang San, for his part, used his Blue Silver Grass to catch his reflection, but every time he managed to immobilize it, the shadow slipped out of reach as if made of smoke.
"This isn't a physical battle," Tang San realized. "It's a test of our wills."
---
Xu Tian closed his eyes, letting his breathing calm down. "You're not me," he said, his voice firm. "You're just a shadow, a manifestation of my fears and doubts. And I won't let them control me."
With a shout, he channeled his spiritual energy into his sword, creating a burst of sunlight that dispelled his reflection.
Yue Lian followed suit, lowering her bow and facing her reflection with determination. "I don't need to fight you, because I already know who I am," she said, watching the figure in front of her fade away.
Tang San used his wits, creating an intricate pattern with his Blue Silver Grass that reflected his self-confidence. "No matter how many times you try to replicate me, you will never be able to surpass what I really am."
With their reflections defeated, the shadows returned to the mirrors, and the labyrinth began to change, revealing a new path.
---
Finally, they arrived at a circular hall in the center of the tower. In the center, an energy sphere floated, pulsing with a golden and silver light.
"This must be the core of the tower," Yue Lian said, cautiously approaching.
"But what are we supposed to do now?" asked Tang San, looking at the sphere curiously.
A voice echoed in the hall, loud and solemn. "To advance, you must demonstrate your unity. Light and darkness must coexist, just like the sun and moon share the sky."
Xu Tian and Yue Lian exchanged glances. They both approached the sphere, extending their hands. As their spiritual energies combined, the sphere began to shine brightly, transforming into a golden and silver key.
"We did it," Yue Lian whispered, with a relieved smile.
"This is just the beginning," Xu Tian said, holding the key. "The real test still awaits us."
