DC Apostle in the Marvel Universe

Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Bait

At this moment, Russell was unaware that he had quietly landed on Kingpin's blacklist.

The underground ruler of New York was waiting for his arrival.

With the experience from their first trip and a better car equipped with a navigation system, Russell and his team didn't get lost this time.

However, as soon as their three cars entered Hell's Kitchen, Russell sensed something was off.

It was too quiet. Unnaturally quiet for Hell's Kitchen.

This silence didn't mean there were no pedestrians around.

Rather, there wasn't a single gang member in sight on the streets or alleys.

If this had happened two days ago in the morning, Russell wouldn't have been surprised. Back then, he and Allen had been rampaging through the area like avenging spirits, hunting down gang members.

But now, two full days had passed. Even if the gangs in Hell's Kitchen were still on high alert, it was strange that not a single gang member could be seen.

Allen, who was driving, hadn't noticed anything unusual and continued heading toward their destination.

"Pull over. Something's not right."

Although Allen didn't understand why, he followed Russell's order without question.

"Safety off. Be ready to fight at any moment."

The two Chevrolet SUVs following Russell's car also pulled over...

The eight soldiers inside immediately heard Russell's command through the radio and snapped into combat mode, fully alert.

"What's going on?" Allen was still clueless.

He hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

"The streets are too quiet. Since we got here, have you seen a single gang member?" Russell casually replied while scanning their surroundings, "No gang could pull this off. There's only one person who can control all the gangs and thugs in Hell's Kitchen like this..."

"The underground ruler of New York, Kingpin."

Allen wasn't part of the underworld and had never heard of Kingpin, so he couldn't grasp the seriousness of Russell's tone.

Just as Allen was about to ask more questions, he noticed a small red dot appear on Russell's forehead.

Russell didn't see the laser sight, but his instincts screamed danger.

He leaned slightly to the side, and a moment later, the seat behind him was torn apart by a massive force.

*Bang!*

By the time the car seat was blown apart, leaving a basketball-sized hole, the sound of the gunshot finally reached them.

"That's a high-caliber sniper rifle!"

Although they couldn't see the sniper, the damage to the seat made it clear that only a high-caliber sniper rifle could have caused it.

"Now you know what's going on, right?"

With that, Russell unbuckled his seatbelt and leaped into a nearby alley.

From the angle of the shot, the sniper was likely on a rooftop about 500 meters ahead on the main road.

After Russell was attacked, the eight soldiers from the two SUVs also got out of their vehicles and formed a defensive line.

However, they didn't know where the sniper was, so they could only adopt a standard defensive formation.

"Damn it!"

Under normal circumstances, the soldiers' response would have been flawless.

But this wasn't a normal situation. They were up against a sniper with the high ground.

"Everyone, get into the alley! Stay away from the cars!" Russell's command had just been issued when the sniper fired a second shot.

This time, the sniper didn't aim at anyone. Instead, he targeted the fuel tank of the second SUV.

*Boom!*

The car exploded into a massive fireball, sending the eight soldiers flying.

The sudden explosion didn't kill the soldiers, but it left them with significant injuries.

"You take care of them!" Russell tossed the radio to Allen, then glanced up at the rooftops and made a decision.

'If you want to play, I'll play with you.'

With a single leap, Russell jumped onto the roof of a six-story building and began sprinting toward the sniper 500 meters away.

At first, the sniper didn't notice Russell charging toward him.

It wasn't until Russell's footsteps thundered across the rooftops that the sniper realized what was happening.

Five hundred meters was a considerable distance for an ordinary person.

But for Russell, who had undergone enhancements, it took less than ten seconds.

When the sniper finally noticed Russell barreling toward him, he quickly adjusted his aim, intending to take Russell out.

His decision wasn't wrong, but he overlooked one critical detail: Russell wasn't like any opponent he had faced before.

Lifting the sniper rifle, adjusting the aim, and firing... the sniper's reaction was impressively fast.

But by the time he pulled the trigger, Russell had already closed the distance and was right in front of him.

*Bang!*

The bullet whizzed past Russell as he grabbed the sniper rifle's barrel and effortlessly bent it.

"You shouldn't have come alone."

From his shooting skills and quick reactions, the sniper was undoubtedly an elite. Unfortunately, he was alone.

If a single sniper could easily take Russell down, he might as well have stayed hidden in a corner.

Just as Russell was about to finish off the sniper, a sense of danger flashed through his mind, "This is a trap!"

Realizing this, Russell pushed off the ground with all his strength, trying to leap away.

But he was a step too late.

As part of Kingpin's carefully laid ambush, there was more than just one sniper.

To deal with Russell, Kingpin had deployed ten snipers. The one Russell had discovered was merely bait.

Unlike the bait sniper, the other nine snipers had a simple task: when Russell appeared in front of the bait, they were to take out both Russell and the bait sniper.

They were also armed with high-caliber sniper rifles and specialized armor-piercing rounds.

Kingpin didn't know where Russell had come from or what abilities he possessed, but he had taken the safest approach.

Using high-caliber sniper rifles and armor-piercing rounds in a densely populated city was akin to a massacre.

Ordinary walls couldn't stop these specialized armor-piercing rounds. Even hiding behind cars or buildings wouldn't save anyone...
