"You're a lifesaver, Lucy," Ethan replied with a warm smile. "I'd put your hacking skills against anyone in this city, no question."
Lucy's eyes widened slightly, and for a fleeting moment, a faint blush dusted her cheeks. She quickly regained her composure, brushing off his words with a casual shrug. "Guess I'm pretty good at what I do," she muttered, though the corners of her lips tugged upward.
Before their conversation could continue, a sudden burst of gunfire erupted from the factory's entrance. The unmistakable cacophony of bullets slamming into metal echoed through the halls, cutting through the relative calm.
Maine's comm crackled to life, Kiwi's urgent voice coming through amidst the chaos. "Maine! You guys done yet? Maelstrom's brought in reinforcements—a lot of them! What the hell did you do in there? I'm hearing explosions!"
In the background, Rebecca's unmistakable voice rang out, laced with her usual colorful vocabulary. "These chrome-headed pricks just won't stop coming! I'm gonna blow their goddamn heads off!"
"Pilar, cover me, you idiot!"
"I am covering you!" Pilar shot back, his tone equally aggravated.
Maine growled in frustration, slamming a fresh clip into his rifle. "We're on our way, Kiwi. Hold the line!"
The team bolted toward the exit, only to be greeted by a hail of gunfire the moment they stepped outside. Bullets ricocheted off the walls, forcing them to duck back into the factory.
"Shit!" Maine bellowed, his tone more furious than panicked. "Their firepower's too heavy. They've got this exit locked down tight. We need another way out, and we need it fast!"
Ethan waved his hand dismissively, his calm expression betraying none of the chaos around him. "No need to overthink it. I'll handle this," he said, his voice steady yet resolute.
Before anyone could respond, he vanished, leaving nothing but a faint blur in his wake. In less than a blink, Ethan reappeared at the incline near the factory's main gate, facing seven Maelstrom members advancing with their weapons drawn.
"Mechanical Striker."
With that, Ethan's fists detached from his arms, propelled forward by high-tensile compressed steel cables. The Maelstrom gangers, caught off guard by the strange and deadly attack, instinctively raised their Copperhead rifles and opened fire in a futile attempt to destroy the incoming fists.
But their bullets merely glanced off the reinforced cybernetics, unable to cause even a scratch.
In a matter of seconds, Ethan's fists slammed into their targets with the force of a freight train, shattering skulls and leaving the seven Maelstrom members crumpled and lifeless.
As the dust settled, Ethan retracted his fists with a faint metallic whirr and shifted his attention to the chaos on the street.
The armored van Rebecca and Pilar had been using for cover was riddled with bullet holes, smoke curling from its shattered frame. It was on the verge of exploding. Nearby, Kiwi, Rebecca, and Pilar were entrenched near the bridge, trading fire with waves of Maelstrom reinforcements flooding in from every direction.
"Die already, you chrome-plated pricks!" Rebecca screamed, her manic grin widening as she unloaded dual SMGs into the enemy ranks.
But her ferocity hadn't gone unnoticed. Across the bridge, a hidden Maelstrom sniper lined up their smart rifle, an Ashura, squarely at Rebecca's head. The faint hum of the rifle's targeting system locked onto its mark, and the sniper pulled the trigger.
The intelligent bullet curved through the air, arcing directly toward Rebecca's exposed forehead.
At the last possible moment, Ethan appeared in front of her, his body absorbing the sniper round along with a volley of rifle fire from other gangers.
"Incineration Cannon."
Ethan raised his right arm, golden energy swirling into his palm before erupting in a devastating wave of firepower. The cannon's energy blasted across the wide bridge like the sun's fury, consuming everything in its path.
The Maelstrom forces on the other side stood no chance. Soldiers, vehicles, and even the concrete bridge itself were reduced to ash and molten slag. The only trace of their presence was a scorched, smoking path that extended across the destroyed structure.
As the last remnants of the blast dissipated, Ethan stood motionless, his right arm still extended. His body radiated heat, faint trails of smoke rising from his cybernetic frame.
From behind cover, Kiwi stared at the scene, her wide eyes betraying a rare moment of genuine shock. "What the hell…" she muttered, her voice barely audible. Her sharp, analytical mind struggled to reconcile the sheer magnitude of Ethan's destructive power.
Even Rebecca and Pilar, who had seen Ethan's previous feats, were left speechless. This display dwarfed his earlier clash with Murakami. The raw, unrestrained power he had just unleashed was on another level entirely.
Rebecca broke the silence first, her voice tinged with concern. "Ethan? Are you okay?" she called, stepping cautiously toward him. He remained in place, his right arm still raised, unmoving.
Before she could reach him, Kiwi grabbed her arm, stopping her in her tracks. Her brows furrowed deeply as she hissed, "Stay back. He might be suffering from cyberpsychosis."
"Cyberpsychosis?!" Rebecca exclaimed, her voice laced with disbelief.
While she didn't fully understand the intricacies of cyberpsychosis, she was no stranger to the term. The news was littered with stories about it—how an overload of cybernetic implants could destabilize a person's psyche, stripping away their humanity bit by bit.
The official explanation was grim: the condition gradually eroded a person's identity, pushing them to reject their humanity in favor of becoming a machine. Social connections would fade, replaced by isolation. Eventually, the afflicted would succumb to madness, slaughtering everything and everyone in their vicinity.
"With Ethan's level of cybernetic coverage, it's only a matter of time," Kiwi remarked, her tone calm but underpinned with a quiet unease. Her sharp gaze lingered on Ethan as if weighing the sheer danger he represented.
"If he really does fall into cyberpsychosis," she continued, "I don't see how anyone could stop him. Not us, not even MAX-TAC."
