In just three seconds, the weapon finished charging, and a blinding crimson beam shot forth, tearing through the air toward Ethan.

The sheer heat distorted the surrounding space, generating an oppressive force that made even Lucy, hardened by years of Night City's cruelty, tremble uncontrollably.

….

Yet, as she watched Ethan stand unwavering in front of her, shielding her without hesitation, a foreign warmth began to seep into her icy heart—a feeling she hadn't known in years.

The instant the beam was about to collide with Ethan, he raised his right hand. The energy core embedded in his chest hummed to life, channeling its immense power into his palm.

With a precise motion, he unleashed the Incineration Cannon, its golden energy blazing forth like sunlight piercing the storm.

The moment Ethan's attack met the laser beam, the golden energy overwhelmed the crimson light, consuming it entirely. The beam surged forward, striking Royce directly.

Boom!

The hall filled with a blinding radiance as the Incineration Cannon engulfed Royce and his military mech.

His enraged screams were cut short as both he and the machine beneath him disintegrated into fragments of molten metal and ash.

When the light faded, what remained was a blackened path, stretching over ten meters and ending at the factory's reinforced steel wall. Even the thick concrete and metal had melted, leaving a gaping hole where the wall once stood.

Ethan lowered his hand, inspecting the faint scorch marks on his alloy chest.

He had used less than ten percent of the Incineration Cannon's full power, yet its destructive force was enough to tear through the factory.

If he had unleashed its maximum potential, the entire building would likely have been reduced to rubble.

From their hiding spot, Maine and Dorio stared in stunned silence, their breaths shallow. The sheer destructive power of Ethan's attack left them awestruck, and an unspoken fear crept into their hearts.

"Goddamn," Dorio muttered, inhaling deeply to calm herself. "If Ethan hadn't been here, we'd all be dead."

Maine couldn't disagree. Despite his years of experience and confidence in his military-grade cyberware, he couldn't fathom what kind of augmentation could produce such overwhelming firepower.

Lucy, too, was shaken. Watching Ethan absorb the laser blasts and retaliate with such devastating force, she couldn't help but feel her guarded heart crack just a little.

In that moment, Ethan's silhouette stood like a blazing sun against the cold, merciless backdrop of Night City.

After a long pause, Ethan broke the silence. "No more enemies nearby. Let's grab what we came for and get out of here."

He turned to Lucy, who was sitting on the ground, clutching her head. Concern flickered in his golden eyes as he approached her. "You okay, Lucy?" he asked, offering her a hand.

"I'm fine," she replied, her voice steady despite her evident exhaustion. "Forcefully aborting a hack always leaves me a little dizzy."

She took his hand, allowing him to help her up. Her tired but elegant features were softened by a faint smile, an expression of gratitude.

"Good," Ethan said, releasing her hand. "Once we grab the package, we'll head back immediately."

He walked away toward Maine, his focus already shifting back to the mission.

Lucy watched his retreating figure, an unfamiliar mix of emotions bubbling within her.

For the first time in what felt like forever, she wanted to say something—anything—but the words caught in her throat.

After a moment of hesitation, she finally smiled and called out softly, "Thank you, Ethan."

Ethan paused, turning his head to glance back at her. His gaze met hers, and he saw something unexpected: Lucy's cold, distant demeanor had melted, replaced by a warmth that softened her sharp features. Her smile was genuine, delicate, and unlike anything he had seen before.

"You're welcome," Ethan replied simply, his voice calm but sincere.

….

Even in all the chaos Ethan had seen in Night City, nothing quite compared to the sight before him.

Lucy's rare, gentle smile seemed almost otherworldly, softening the coldness that usually defined her demeanor. It was enough to make him pause, as if the world itself had slowed for a moment.

But Maine's booming voice broke the spell, dragging Ethan back to reality.

"Ethan, you pulled our asses out of the fire today. That mech… hell, without you, none of us would've made it," Maine said, his gruff voice carrying a surprising tone of sincerity.

Dorio, always blunt and to the point, nodded. "Yeah. You didn't just save our lives—you carried the whole mission. So we're giving you the payout for this job. All of it." Her voice was steady, but her intense gaze left no room for argument.

Ethan raised an eyebrow, momentarily surprised by their gesture. But he knew better than to refuse.

People like Maine and Dorio weren't the type to let a debt go unpaid, and declining their gratitude would only make things awkward.

"Thanks. I'll put it to good use," Ethan replied with a faint smile. "Been meaning to get myself a solid hacking system anyway."

Maine let out a loud laugh, slapping Ethan on the back. "That's the spirit! You're one of us now, man. Count on it."

The group pushed deeper into the factory, making their way to the second-floor workshop. Ethan recognized it instantly—the very room where V and Jackie had retrieved the Flathead drone.

"Found it!" Maine's voice was triumphant as he held up the legendary Mantis Blade they had been searching for. "Let's get the hell out of here before Maelstrom throws another curveball."

Lucy worked quickly, her fingers flying across her interface as she hacked open locked doors and disarmed every turret and mine in their path.

Her quiet efficiency was a stark contrast to Rebecca's boisterous antics echoing in Ethan's comms from outside.

As they moved toward the exit, Lucy glanced at Ethan, her usual stoic expression softening slightly. "Not bad, huh?" she asked, a rare hint of pride in her voice.

Ethan noticed the shift in her demeanor. Where Lucy had once treated him like a distant stranger, she now regarded him with something closer to camaraderie.

"You're a lifesaver, Lucy," Ethan replied with a warm smile. "I'd put your hacking skills against anyone in this city, no question."
