Chapter 23: The walk
As they began walking, Aiden fell into an easy rhythm, his hands tucked into his pockets as he took in the pristine campus. The silence stretched just long enough for Ichinose to glance at him curiously before he broke it with a characteristic quip.
"Man, this place really wants to make a statement, doesn't it?" he said, gesturing broadly to the neatly manicured gardens and modern buildings that gleamed in the sunlight. "Feels like we're walking through the set of one of those impossibly perfect school dramas. You know, the ones with a hidden rooftop garden and a brooding protagonist practicing archery under a sakura tree."
Ichinose blinked, caught off guard by the oddly specific description, then let out a soft laugh. "Archery under a sakura tree? That's such a vivid image," she said, her tone light but curious. "Do you watch a lot of those shows, Takahashi-kun?"
"Of course not," Aiden replied, feigning indignation. "I just have a knack for predicting clichés. It's a gift."
Ichinose giggled again, her earlier unease starting to fade. "So, if we're in one of those shows, what does that make us? Side characters?"
"Speak for yourself," Aiden quipped, a grin playing on his lips. "I'm clearly the quirky best friend who steals every scene. The crowd favorite."
Ichinose tilted her head thoughtfully, her smile widening. "I guess that makes me... the cheerful class representative who works hard to make everyone happy?"
Aiden stopped mid-step, spinning around with an exaggerated look of shock. "What? Ichinose-san, don't sell yourself short! You're at least the radiant student council president who secretly orchestrates everything behind the scenes while inspiring the protagonist."
Ichinose's cheeks flushed faintly, and she waved a hand as though brushing off his words. "You're teasing me again, Takahashi-kun," she said, though her voice was more amused than flustered.
"Maybe a little," Aiden admitted with a smirk as he fell back into step beside her. "But it's not like I'm wrong. Look at you—smiling, laughing, making everyone feel like they're part of something special. If you're not running this school by next semester, I'll eat my hat."
Ichinose laughed, the sound light and genuine. "You're really something," she said, shaking her head. "But if I'm being honest, I'm still just trying to figure everything out, same as everyone else."
Aiden raised an eyebrow, glancing at her sidelong. "You've got a funny way of showing it. Most people don't 'figure things out' by being this optimistic."
"Well, what's the alternative?" Ichinose asked, her tone soft but earnest. "If I start the year feeling negative or scared, won't that just make it harder? Besides, this campus..." Her gaze drifted to the perfectly aligned rows of trees and the glass-walled buildings reflecting the afternoon light. "It feels like a fresh start. Like anything's possible."
Her voice carried a warmth that seemed to linger in the air, and for a moment, Aiden didn't reply, his usual quips replaced by a quiet smile.
"Well, aren't you full of sunshine," he finally said, breaking the brief silence. "Don't get me wrong—it's a good thing. You've got a knack for making people feel like everything's going to be fine, even when it's clearly not."
Ichinose blinked, her brow furrowing slightly. "What do you mean?"
Aiden gestured vaguely to the cameras subtly placed along the lampposts and building corners. "I mean this place," he said. "It's too perfect. Like they're trying way too hard to make us forget we're being watched."
Ichinose's gaze followed his gesture, and her expression turned pensive. "Maybe they are," she said after a moment, her tone quieter. "But... I think it's more about creating an environment where we can grow. Like, they want us to focus on the opportunities instead of the pressure."
Her words hung in the air for a moment, and Aiden couldn't help but chuckle. "You're a natural, Ichinose-san. Turning Big Brother vibes into motivational speeches. I should've guessed you'd find the silver lining."
Ichinose smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "It's not about finding the silver lining," she said softly. "It's about believing it's there in the first place. And, well..." She glanced at him briefly. "If you're going to be here for three years, doesn't it make sense to try and enjoy it?"
"Fair enough," Aiden said, his smirk softening. He tilted his head toward the sprawl of the Keyaki Mall coming into view ahead of them. "And speaking of enjoying things, looks like we've hit the jackpot. Behold, paradise for procrastinators and snack enthusiasts."
Ichinose's eyes lit up as she took in the bustling mall, her earlier nervousness now replaced by genuine excitement. "This is amazing," she said, her voice tinged with awe. "It's like a whole city packed into one building!"
Aiden grinned, leaning casually against a railing overlooking the main floor. "Not bad, right? I was expecting, like, a sad little school store with overpriced pencils. But this? This is legit."
Ichinose turned to him, her smile wide. "You were right, Takahashi-kun. Exploring the campus was a great idea. I feel so much better already."
"Glad I could help," Aiden replied, raising his Coke in a mock toast. "But remember—you owe me Peachy-chan's debut next time."
Ichinose laughed, holding her water bottle close. "Fine, fine. Peachy-chan will make an appearance. But only if you promise to come up with another ridiculous nickname."
"Oh, don't worry," Aiden said with a smirk. "I've got a million of them."
Their laughter blended into the hum of the mall as they disappeared into the crowd, their steps light against the polished floor.

The towering glass façade of Keyaki Mall loomed ahead, reflecting the sunlight in shimmering patterns. As they stepped inside, the rush of cool air conditioning greeted them, accompanied by the faint buzz of conversations and the occasional click of footsteps on polished tiles.
Aiden came to an abrupt stop just past the entrance, his head tilting back as he took in the sheer scale of the place. "Okay," he said, his voice breaking the momentary silence. "This is not a mall. This is a theme park disguised as a mall."
Ichinose stepped beside him, her eyes widening as she scanned the sprawling space. Multiple floors stretched above them, each packed with vibrant storefronts and bright signage. Clothing boutiques lined the outer edges, interspersed with cafés that had tiny tables spilling into the walkways. In the distance, an electronics store buzzed with screens displaying everything from sleek laptops to massive TVs.
"It's... huge," Ichinose said softly, her voice laced with awe. She turned slowly, her gaze darting between the rows of shops. "I've never seen anything like this on a campus before. It's like a whole city in here!"
"I know, right?" Aiden replied, gesturing dramatically toward a store advertising luxury watches. "What kind of school mall sells designer watches? Are we training to be CEOs or something?"
Ichinose giggled, her awe momentarily giving way to amusement. "Maybe they want us to learn how to spend money responsibly?" she suggested, though her tone was light and playful.
"Yeah, that's it," Aiden said, nodding sagely. "And by 'responsibly,' they mean 'on things you definitely don't need.'"
As they moved further inside, the mall's vibrant energy seemed to envelop them. Students wandered in small groups, some clutching shopping bags while others crowded around café menus or peered through store windows.
Ichinose's steps quickened as they passed a quaint stationery shop, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the colorful pens and notebooks arranged in neat rows. "Oh, look!" she said, pointing. "They have so many cute designs. I could spend hours just picking a notebook."
"Hours?" Aiden repeated, his eyebrows lifting. "Ichinose-san, I'm starting to think you're one of those people who owns fifty notebooks but only writes in, like, two of them."
Ichinose laughed, though her cheeks flushed faintly. "That's not true! I just... like having options."
"Sure, sure," Aiden said with a smirk, glancing at the display. "Well, better stock up now. Who knows? Maybe next week they'll unveil a limited-edition collection."
They continued walking, the sheer variety of shops making it impossible not to stop and stare. A brightly lit dessert café drew their attention next, its glass display case showcasing rows of intricately decorated pastries. Ichinose pressed a hand to her chest, her expression softening. "Those look amazing," she murmured, her gaze lingering on a strawberry tart topped with gold flakes.
"Fancy desserts on day one," Aiden remarked, leaning closer to peer at the display. "Bold move, school. They're trying to bankrupt us before we even figure out the point system."
Ichinose giggled, stepping back from the case. "I'm almost scared to look at the price."
"Almost?" Aiden teased, raising an eyebrow. "I'm completely terrified. Let's keep moving before we end up selling our souls for macarons."
Further down the main walkway, they came across an escalator leading to the second floor. Aiden paused, glancing at the stores above. "Clothing shops, cafés, electronics... Is there anything they don't have here?"
Ichinose tilted her head thoughtfully. "I'm not sure, but... it's kind of exciting, isn't it? Knowing we have access to all this?"
"Exciting," Aiden echoed, tapping his chin. "Or dangerous. Imagine getting your first paycheck, only to spend half of it on impulse buys because everything looks cool."
Ichinose's laughter rang out again, warm and unrestrained. "You're so dramatic, Takahashi-kun," she said, shaking her head. "But you're not wrong."
As they reached the center of the mall, a massive skylight above bathed the area in natural light. At its heart stood a fountain surrounded by small seating areas, where groups of students were already chatting and comparing purchases. Aiden let out a low whistle, crossing his arms. "Okay, I'll admit it," he said. "This place is impressive. Over-the-top, but impressive."
Ichinose glanced at him, her smile softening. "I think it's more than just impressive," she said quietly. "It feels like they're trying to make us feel... free. Like we're part of something special."
Aiden turned to her, his smirk fading slightly at the sincerity in her tone. "Free, huh?" he repeated, his voice quieter now. "Guess that's one way to look at it."
She nodded, her gaze lingering on the fountain. "I know it might seem excessive, but... I think it's kind of wonderful. It makes me want to do my best."
Aiden watched her for a moment, then shook his head with a faint chuckle. "You're something else, Ichinose-san," he said, his smirk returning. "But hey, if this place makes you want to work harder, I guess that means the designers did their job."
Ichinose laughed, nudging him lightly with her elbow. "And you? Does this place make you want to work harder?"
"Harder?" Aiden said, feigning mock indignation. "I'll have you know, I'm already working hard—trying to keep up with your optimism is exhausting."
