Chapter 22: Peachy-chan and Coke-chan Take the Stage
The sound was light and infectious, brimming with genuine amusement. Aiden froze mid-movement, the Coke still halfway out of the vending machine. Turning his head slightly, he saw a familiar figure standing a few steps away: Ichinose Honami.
Her blue eyes sparkled with mirth as she covered her mouth, trying and failing to stifle her laughter. "I'm sorry," she managed between giggles, her voice warm and sincere. "I didn't mean to interrupt. It's just... I've never seen anyone treat a soda with that much devotion."
Aiden straightened slowly, holding the Coke can aloft like it was a trophy. "Devotion, you say? Ichinose-san, this isn't just a soda." He pointed to the can dramatically, his smirk widening. "This is Coke-chan, the one constant in a world full of chaos."
Ichinose giggled again, shaking her head. "You're really something, Takahashi-kun."
"Well, I try," he said, shrugging casually before popping the tab and taking a long sip. He let out a satisfied sigh, tipping the can toward her in a mock toast. "To Coke-chan, the unsung hero of my sanity."
Ichinose stepped closer, her smile never fading. "You're pretty good at making people laugh, huh? Even when you're just talking to yourself."
"Ah, caught me in the act," Aiden replied, leaning casually against the vending machine. "But in my defense, Coke-chan's a great listener. Never judges, always refreshes." He paused, tilting his head. "What about you, Ichinose-san? You seem like the type to have a favorite go-to drink. Let me guess—something sweet, but not too sweet. Lemon tea?"
Ichinose blinked, surprised by his guess, before laughing softly. "Close! It's iced peach tea, actually."
"Peach tea," Aiden mused, nodding thoughtfully. "Sweet, refreshing, and just a little fancy. Suits you."
Her cheeks flushed faintly, but she didn't shy away from his gaze. "Well, now I feel like I need to name my drink too," she said playfully. "How about... Peachy-chan?"
Aiden grinned, stepping toward the vending machine. "Peachy-chan, huh? I like it. Sounds like Coke-chan just found a best friend." He tapped the screen, navigating the options before selecting iced peach tea.
Ichinose blinked as the machine beeped, processing the transaction. "Wait, Takahashi-kun, you didn't have to—"
"Done," Aiden interrupted smoothly, holding the drink out to her with a grin.
Ichinose hesitated before taking it, her expression softening. "Thank you. But I should pay for it." She opened her phone to transfer points.
Aiden shook his head, taking a dramatic step back. "No way. You can pay next time."
"Next time?" Ichinose echoed, tilting her head.
Aiden gasped, clutching his chest as though she'd just stabbed him. "What's this? The princess doesn't want to hang out with her loyal knight again?" He leaned against the vending machine for support, his voice thick with mock despair. "First you accept my drink, and now you're planning to kick me to the curb? Do you have any idea how hard it is for a knight to find a job after getting fired by his only employer?"
Ichinose giggled, holding her drink close as her cheeks flushed again. "You're ridiculous, Takahashi-kun," she said between laughs.
"And yet," Aiden replied, pointing at her with his Coke can, "you're still laughing. I must be doing something right." He raised the can in a mock toast. "To Peachy-chan and Coke-chan—the ultimate duo. Bound to take this school by storm."
Ichinose giggled again, her cheeks warming as she held up the iced peach tea. "Fine. To Peachy-chan and Coke-chan," she echoed. "But you really are impossible, you know that?"
Aiden smirked, leaning casually against the vending machine. "I've been told it's part of my charm."
Ichinose's laughter rang out again, a sound that seemed to lighten the air around them. For a moment, it was as though the chaos of the day didn't exist, replaced by the easy camaraderie of two strangers finding humor in the ordinary.
As the laughter subsided, Ichinose glanced toward the vending machine, then back at Aiden. "You know," she said, her tone more curious now, "you don't seem like the type to slip away from the crowd. Are you avoiding everyone?"
Aiden tilted his head, the smirk on his lips softening into something more thoughtful. "Avoiding? Not really. Just needed some air. And maybe a moment to figure out this place." He took a casual sip from his Coke, then added with a teasing edge, "Talking about escaping, though... I thought the upcoming school Madonna would be surrounded by all years, fighting to win her heart."
Ichinose's eyes widened slightly, a faint blush rising to her cheeks. "M-Madonna? You're doing it again, Takahashi-kun!" she exclaimed, her tone flustered but not upset. "What's with all these over-the-top nicknames?"
Aiden shrugged, his smirk widening. "Just calling it like I see it. You've got the whole package: the smile, the charm, the 'making-everyone-feel-special' superpower. It's only day one, and you're already trending."
Ichinose giggled, her blush deepening. "You're unbelievable," she said, shaking her head. But her mind lingered on his words, the teasing lightheartedness not enough to fully distract her from her growing unease.
Her bright smile faltered for a moment as she glanced down at her hands. "Actually," she said hesitantly, her voice softer now, "I wasn't really trying to avoid anyone. I just... needed a moment to think..."
The laughter lingered between them, but Ichinose's expression shifted slightly as she glanced down at her hands, her earlier unease creeping back in. "Actually," she said hesitantly, her voice softer now, "I wasn't really trying to avoid anyone. I just... needed a moment to think."
Her words faltered, and Aiden noticed the way her fingers fidgeted, her gaze dropping briefly. She didn't continue, and the silence stretched, unspoken thoughts weighing heavy between them.
Aiden took another sip from his Coke before speaking, his tone light. "You know, Ichinose-san, if you keep being mysterious like that, I'm going to start thinking you've got a secret identity. Are you a spy? Or maybe a double agent?"
Ichinose blinked, startled by the sudden change in tone. Her head snapped up, and she met his playful grin. "W-What? No, of course not!" she stammered, her earlier nervousness momentarily replaced by confusion.
"Phew," Aiden said with mock relief, running a hand through his hair. "For a second there, I thought I'd have to start watching my back. Glad to know I'm safe."
Ichinose couldn't help but laugh, the tension in her shoulders easing just a bit. "Why do I feel like you're just trying to distract me?"
"Guilty," Aiden admitted with a grin. "And speaking of distractions... how about we take a walk? The campus is too pretty to ignore, and I'm curious to see what else this place has to offer."
Ichinose hesitated, then nodded, her smile returning. "That actually sounds nice."
