Chapter 44 - The History of Kilyam Family Pt.2

The [Rite of Manifestation] and the [Rite of Revelation] have concluded, thus most of the branch families have returned to their territories, leaving behind some families.

What remains are the families of the Three Great Houses and the nannies, and with so many children, life has become much livelier than it was before.

For them, the most important thing is their contract with the spirits that bring blessings to this land. Those with the covenant bring prosperity by just being present.

Indeed, since the appearance of the Spirit Mark on me three years ago, there has been an unprecedented harvest, not only in the Spirit Forest but also in the surrounding farmlands. Therefore, they can be said to be very friendly to me, the one who possesses the Spirit Mark.

On the other hand, they behave as if my mother does not exist. They completely ignore her, and she is never brought up in conversation. It’s quite scary to be honest.

It seems that they disapprove not only of personal likes and dislikes but also the very fact of my parents’ marriage.

Why is that?

The answer lies in the situation surrounding the Glass Region and the Kilyam family, as well as history.

“Last time, we ended with the story of Lord Hugo, the 5th generation head of the house. He is credited with developing Glassbridge into a thriving trade city and further fortifying the Gemini Bridge as a stronghold and turning Glassbridge into a castle city.”

Today, we continue our study of the Kilyam family’s history.

They succeeded in repelling external threats, but due to the turmoil within the Unified Kingdom, there were several factions with an eye on the Glass Region.

To strengthen the defense, large-scale public works began at Gemini Bridge and Glassbridge. These projects did not finish within one generation and were inherited by the next.

“Since Lord Hugo remained unmarried throughout his life, he had no children. Thus, his nephew, Lord Mason, became his successor and repeatedly repelled external threats while advancing the fortification of Gemini Bridge.”

In the midst of reorganizations and withdrawals of various lords within the Unified Kingdom, the Kilyam family received an invitation to pledge their allegiance.

Despite the expansion of the frontier area, the Grass Region was still referred to as a wilderness. Although the Kilyam family was expanding their territory, they hadn’t yet taken a clear stance.

Lord Mason made a decision.

To stand independently as a sovereign nation without aligning with any of the existing factions. He declared the establishment of the Kilyam Kingdom to the Glass Region and beyond, transforming it from a centralized nation of the Unified Kingdom.

“Lord Mason, or rather, King Mason, had many children. Several of his children showed a strong affinity with the spirits. Among the three sons who possessed the ‘Blessing of the Spirits,’ Prince Benjamin succeeded him, while the remaining two sons were allowed to establish branch families, known as the Lloyd and Morris families.”

By the time of the 7th generation King Benjamin, the Lloyd family had set out for the southern expansion, and their dominion expanded significantly with each passing year.

Land was abundant, but labor was scarce. To alleviate the labor shortage, they started accepting settlers from conflict zones and began moving towards an expansion route.

“During the reign of the 8th generation King Louis, Ignis Volcano in the far east erupted. The eruption blocked the sunlight and caused widespread ashfall, leading to a famine in the eastern part of the continent that lasted for over five years.”

The massive influx of refugees and privateering wars over food.

The collapse of the Unified Kingdom was no longer preventable, as everyone believed.

Then, an individual named Robin Belfast, known as the founder of the Belfast Kingdom, emerged. He threw not only the national treasury but also his personal wealth into securing food. With his extraordinary charisma, he unified the forces on the western side of the Central Great Forest, transforming the centralized Unified Kingdom into the sovereign Belfast Kingdom.

Robin Belfast was decisive, agile in his movements, skilled in controlling people’s hearts, and adept at negotiation. He even traveled to the Kilyam Kingdom himself and secured a promise of massive food exports.

“In the era of the 9th generation King William, various countries recovered from the famine’s impact and grew stronger. When Robin Belfast passed away, and a generational shift occurred, disputes arose between our rich lands and the regional nobility who wanted to claim a share.”

The Belfast Kingdom’s origins meant that its vassals had a high degree of independence. Some were dissatisfied with the principle of non-interference between the Kilyam Kingdom, which inherited it from the Unified Kingdom.

They argued, “That land only existed as a frontier region, and it shouldn’t apply now,” and “It used to be a barren wasteland, but it has developed so much that we should naturally rule it.”

These claims can be summarized as, “If it was barren land, we didn’t want it, but now that it’s flourishing, give us our share.”

These arrogant nobles even said, “The monopoly of the ‘Blessing of the Spirits’ is unbearable, and it’s outrageously unfair that only that land is promised abundance.”

I think their claims were quite arbitrary.

First of all, the “Blessing of the Spirits” is a personal covenant of the Kilyam family, led by Lord Lucas. And at the time of the kingdom’s founding, the Unified Kingdom members were annoyed with Lord Lucas and didn’t allow him to stay in the kingdom.

Lord Lucas went to the barren wilderness alone for seclusion. Aaron Belfast was the only one who stopped him. He not only let go of the “Blessing of the Spirits” but also willingly gave it up.

Noble families of the kingdom have a responsibility for accepting the settlers.

After all, they came here, escaping barely from war-ravaged lands.

Young men and women were taken away by conscription or looting, and only the elderly and children were left. While struggling to make ends meet and dealing with robberies that took away all their seed, they crossed the Great Canyon to reach Barrenfield with little to nothing to their name.

However, the nobles who were at the heart of the war didn’t relent in their arguments and began to enforce material blockades. Such measures included high taxes on exports, confiscation under the guise of censorship, and significant increases in tolls.

If they continue to blockade the supply lines like this, they will be unable to continue. No, it might be better to isolate themselves, opinions were divided within the Kilyam Kingdom, and the discussion was in turmoil when, as if mocking them, the Ignis Volcano erupted again.
