Chapter 37 - Protected Bloodline
In the capital city of Glassbridge, there are twelve major gods closely associated with human life, and among the four great gods, excluding the ocean god, there are three branch temples or churches.
The former includes gods of professions (the triad of occupational gods), the god of combat, the god of agriculture, the god of life, the god of beauty, the god of hunting, the god of fire (twin gods of hammers), the god of brewing, and the god of messengers. The latter comprises gods of the sky, the earth, and the spirits.
Among these, the temple I visit for divine guidance is the branch temple of the god of spirits.
The god of spirits is one of the four great gods, overseeing repose and the rebirth of souls. However, my purpose is not related to the god of spirits but to another deity.
In the branch temple, the deities of the god of spirits are enshrined together, and among them, that certain one—the Weaving God, is included.
Blessing: Weave God【Thread Chant】
Innate Ability: 【Glory of the Weave God】
Derived Abilities: 【Survival Against All Odds】
Information regarding this blessing, whose existence had long been known through bio-scan, has finally been obtained. The reason I possess this blessing and, mainly, the reason behind it.
“The Weaving God refers to the collective term for the three sister deities who govern fate. It is an extremely unique and rare blessing. The Spinning Viscount family has been designated as a protected bloodline by the royal family because of this.”
Bloodlines with a higher occurrence rate of specific blessings than the general population are called hereditary bloodlines. The hereditary bloodline of the Weaving God, with the blessing of Weaving God [Thread Chant], has been produced in the Spinning Viscount family for generations.
Moreover, the term “protected bloodline” refers to a system where, to preserve valuable blessing bloodlines for future generations, political marriages are arranged under the watchful eyes of the royal family.
“The blessing of the Weaving God is considered unique to females. The appearance of the blessing in males is extremely rare, and even if it does, they often pass away before reaching adulthood.”
Here, the theory of premature death before adulthood surfaces. It’s not a prospect I find the least bit pleasing.
Now, what’s intriguing is the derivative ability 【Survival Against All Odds】.
According to Ai, the [Innate Ability] is a pre-existing ability innate from birth and related to one’s profession, automatically acquired without any effort.
On the other hand, the [Derivative Ability] is an acquired ability post-birth, gained through one’s proactive actions—an ability earned through personal effort.
The question is, what did I do?
If taken at face value, it implies that in a perilous situation nearing death, I must have undertaken some action to barely salvage my life.
However, even upon delving into my memories, I can’t recall any such situations. If this were the derivative ability of the [Emperor of Reason], I might have understood… no, probably not. That was just a mysterious power that unilaterally saved me.
Since I couldn’t make sense of this matter no matter how much I thought about it, I decided to put it on hold for the time being.
The reason I have the blessing of the Weaving God. Returning to that, in simple terms, it all boils down to the person whose face I’ve never seen—my mother who gave birth to me.
The Spinning Viscount family is a household where the blessing of the Weaving God becomes its core identity. Due to this ability, they hold the position of advisors to the royal family. Consequently, it’s a family with a female-dominated hierarchy, and the head is also a woman.
The current head of the Spinning Viscount family is my mother’s grandmother, making her my great-grandmother. So, in essence, the hereditary bloodline of the Weaving God [Thread Chant] belongs to my mother’s family.
However, my mother herself does not possess this blessing.
The next head is planned to be my mother’s younger sister, in other words, my aunt. She is the first one in two generations to appear with the blessing, and this decision is considered quite unshakable.
“Those born with the blessing are considered candidates for the next head and spend their time in the temple offering prayers until marriage. However, currently, the more capable individuals are less likely to receive marriage approval from the royal family.”
“Why is that? It seems like it would be better for them to get married quickly and have many children.”
“The blessing of the Weaving God is said to weaken or disappear through marriage, making it impossible for the individuals to fulfill their duties as advisors to the royal family. Therefore, securing active individuals with the ability is considered essential.”
At present, the number of those with the blessing is decreasing, and there is a desire to increase it as much as possible. However, due to the dilemma of wanting someone as an advisor, the marriage of the current head is delayed. This is the predicament they find themselves in.
“What kind of blessings does it give you to become an advisor to the royal family?”
“I would like to state that it’s not certain, but those of higher noble status have a general idea.”
“A public secret, huh?”
“Yes. It’s an unofficial source, so some people consider it dubious. However, it concerns Lord Lyon himself. With that premise in mind, I would be grateful if you could listen.”
“Understood.”
It’s fine even if it’s just a glimpse of the ability. Even if it’s not confirmed information, I definitely want to know.
“As I mentioned earlier, the Weaving God is a goddess who governs fate. In mythology, it is said that she weaves the threads of fate to depict someone patterns of destiny.”
When I hear about governing fate, the only image that comes to mind is that of tarot cards. The cards depict the wheel of fortune, symbolizing the wheel or helm that controls destiny.
“Those with the blessing of the Weaving God [Thread Chant] can touch the threads of fate woven by the goddesses. The extent of the ability varies from person to person, but it is said that they can see either the past, present, or future.”
“That’s surprising.”
If it’s really possible to read fate. And if it extends not just on a personal level but to the level of national affairs, it would be invaluable. It would be natural for a country to want to keep it.
“Among the protected bloodlines, those with or without the blessing, regardless of gender, are obligated to make a visit to the temple for three generations, hoping for the manifestation of the blessing.”
Those born in the main family are considered the first generation, so I, as the second generation, have the obligation to visit the temple.
It’s kind of troublesome.
That’s why I come to the branch temple of the god of spirits.
Although it’s a branch temple, it’s located in the capital of the grand duchy of Kilyam, so the temple building seems majestic and quite prestigious.
Normally, the only time you would be indebted to this temple is when you die, which is only once in your life.
In the case of the blessing of the god of spirits, there is no designation for protected bloodlines, and there are few who wish for the blessing, except for families that produce priests.
After all, the temple visit isn’t free. Considerable fee are required, so those seeking blessings concentrate on the gods likely to provide benefits associated with profits.
The popular choices are the god of combat, the god of brewing, and the god of messenger.
Warrior families visit the god of combat, as their combat power significantly varies based on the ability to manipulate fighting spirit. Producers dealing with high-value fermented foods like sake breweries and tea estates visit the god of brewing. And merchant families visit the god of messenger, who is both the god of travelers and commerce.
By the way, in the territory of the Spinning Viscount family, there is a temple dedicated solely to the Weaving God. Therefore, those related to the viscount family naturally visit that temple.
In other words, performing a temple visit for the Weaving God at the branch temple of the god of spirits is an extremely rare case.
Due to its nature, the temple of the god of spirits is extremely busy when consecutive funerals occur.
But on normal days, there’s not much for the priests to do, apart from calculating the tribute collected from various places.
What I’m trying to say is that this is a rare event for the priests, and with the added spice of the client being from a lord’s family, they are all the more motivated.
As soon as I entered the temple, the highly spirited temple chief and staff were lined up, ready to receive me.
“We have been waiting for you. From now until the end of the prayer, we will be responsible for you. The others, please wait in the waiting room.”
