Chapter 36 - The Temple Visit
Before attending the [Rite of Manifestation], there were things that needed to be done. It was conveyed to them upon their arrival.
“What is the ‘Temple Visit’ in the first place and what is its significance?”
“The ‘Temple Visit’ is the act of offering prayers to gods other than the Class God before the [Rite of Manifestation] and [Rite of Revelation]. It has become a custom to visit the gods with whom one has a connection to their family or personally desires protection.”
In the [Rite of Manifestation], the Class God bestows an occupation based on the individual’s aptitude.
‘Having aptitude’ is equivalent to ‘having great potential’, and it means that, with the abilities associated with the profession, one can further enhance their strengths. But, at only seven years old, most people cannot be aware of what class they received. That’s where the [Rite of Revelation] comes in.”
“If you undergo the [Rite of Revelation], not only the class but also blessings and covenants you got become apparent. This allows you to reflect the results on your life.”
It’s like a simplified version of an open status. It should be a useful reference. However, it doesn’t seem like one’s entire future is determined by this.
“What do you mean by ‘reflecting on your life’?”
“For example, if someone got a technical class, you can apprentice under a master. If you have a talent for business, you can serve in a merchant house. It’s common to look for a place of employment from the age of seven.”
“Isn’t deciding your future at seven too early?”
For someone born in modern Japan, it feels like too soon.
Elementary school, first and second grade. At that point, the course of life is decided. Such a case reminds one of the inheritance of traditional arts.
Considering life efficiency, there would be fewer unnecessary detours. If you master one thing, you can allocate more time to it. However, the class bestowed may not necessarily align with one’s dreams. There might be children who resist it, right?
“There is certainly a possibility. Depending on the individual’s efforts, starting training at a young age allows for independence at a young age. If it’s a boy, he can marry and support a family perfectly well.”
Oh, I see. This world had an early marriage age.
There is no social security, and parents won’t support you forever. Dreams might come second.
“In the Glass region, judging from the significant social needs and benefits, the [Rite of Revelation] at the age of seven is free for all residents. However, it becomes a paid service for the second time and beyond, and there’s no guarantee you can undergo it even if you wish.”
“Is it free only in the Glass region?”
“In the Glass region, the lord pays the entire amount of donations to the temple for the ceremony on behalf of the residents. However, in other territories, I have heard that there is a partial burden.”
“Since when has it been free?”
“It started during the time of the second head, Lord Noah. The harvest increased, and the number of people born in this land grew. As the town developed, there was a need to nurture individuals engaged in various occupations.”
I see. It’s a system unique to the Grass region, which started from a pioneering village. Even so, to cover all the costs, Lord Noah must have been a bold and forward-thinking ruler.
“If it were up to each individual to pay, it becomes a significant burden for the common people. Therefore, both the [Rite of manifestation] and the [Rite of Revelation] can be considered a special event in the lives of common folks.”
By the way, for nobles, it’s also an important event to determine whether their children have the suitable qualities to become the successors. Therefore, it’s common for parents to attend the ceremony, not just the children.
“Why do they visit the temple before the [Rite of Manifestation]?”
“Blessings are something inherent from birth. That’s probably what you’ve heard. However, in reality, it can also be granted after birth.”
Oh, that’s news to me. Under what circumstances can one receive it?
“Are there any examples?”
“Yes. However, they are rare, and it is limited when they’re young.”
When the inheritance of blessings is related to the survival of the family, everyone becomes desperate. People have been tried and proven countless times, clinging to the hope of somehow obtaining blessings.
Visiting the temple during childhood is particularly effective. It’s not about receiving something new, but rather, knowing for certain if something might be missed for some reason at birth. That’s the gist of it.
If, by any chance, blessings are detected, one can be granted a better class during the [Rite of Manifestation]. Or, the range of choices for a class can expand.
With such expectations, families with financial flexibility typically visit the temple before the [Rite of Manifestation] and the [Rite of Revelation] as a form of prayer or with considerable emphasis as a tradition.
“In that case, there’s no need to worry if you don’t receive blessings during the temple visit?”
“Yes. Lord Lyon’s visit is a formality, so there’s no need to feel pressured. However, since it’s an official appearance, you must show the proper manners befitting the heir of a lord’s family.”
Yes, manners. I thought it would come to that.
For nobles, appearance is very important. Even if he’s still a child, there’s no leeway.
Ah, it’s troublesome. But, it can’t be helped. Resisting is useless, and it’s a necessary thing. After all, I don’t want to embarrass myself in public either.
