Chapter 17: Chapter 16 : The light in the abyss
David ran, his breath coming in ragged gasps, the pain in his mangled leg a constant, searing agony. The skin on his cheek, torn open by the scavenger leader's brutal blow, felt like a cracked, peeling patch, each frantic step threatening to tear it further. Blood sprayed outwards with every stride, painting a gruesome crimson trail across the white snow, a vivid thread marking his desperate flight. His heart pounded in his chest like a war drum, each beat echoing in his ears, driving him onwards. He could feel the heat radiating from the approaching Wendigo's hand, a heat that seemed to precede the limb itself, warping the air around it.
He barely avoided the creature's grasping hand. The massive skeletal fingers slammed into the frozen ground where he had just been, the impact sending tremors through the earth. The sheer heat radiating from the hand, a heat that felt more like the breath of a furnace than mere warmth, forged cracks that spread across the ice with terrifying speed. These cracks weren't random fractures; they spread in intricate, branching patterns, like veins of molten rock flowing through the ice, creating a beautiful, yet terrifying, architecture of crimson lines against the white.
Then, as if by some unnatural alchemy, the ice beneath David's feet began to crumble. It didn't simply break; it seemed to dissolve, instantly transforming into water that surged upwards, engulfing him in a freezing torrent. The sudden change was disorienting, the solid ground turning into a liquid trap in an instant. David gasped, choking on the icy water as it filled his lungs. He thrashed desperately, trying to stay afloat, but the current was strong, pulling him downwards, towards the monstrous Wendigo.
The rapidly melting ice created a powerful flow of water that cascaded towards the creature, a torrent of icy water rushing down the slope, carrying with it chunks of ice and snow. The Wendigo, still only half-emerged from the swirling black fog, seemed unaffected by the water, the dark magic surrounding it repelling the icy flow like oil and water. The water instead seemed to be drawn to the area surrounding the creature, creating a swirling pool of freezing water and black fog, further obscuring its form and amplifying the unnatural gravity that warped the space around it.
David, now fully submerged, struggled against the current, his injured leg hindering his movements. The icy water stung his open wounds, the pain adding to his already mounting terror. He could see the Wendigo's massive hand looming above him, reaching down through the swirling water and fog, the skeletal fingers grasping for him. The distorted gravity pulled him downwards, towards the creature's grasp, the freezing water and the unnatural pull combining to create a truly horrifying predicament. He was trapped, caught between the crushing force of the warped gravity and the suffocating embrace of the icy water, with the monstrous Wendigo reaching for him from above.
Just as David felt the Wendigo's skeletal fingers close around him, a figure materialized high above, seemingly falling from the sky. This newcomer was an adventurer, clad in gleaming armor that reflected the dim light filtering through the fog. As he fell, he conjured a sword made of pure, incandescent light, the blade humming with celestial energy. With a swift, practiced motion, he brought the blade down, not just tracing a path, but driving the blade deep into the Wendigo's flesh. Starting at the back of the creature's neck, he ran downwards, the light sword carving a deep, glowing furrow through the decaying flesh that clung to the bone, the flesh dry and brittle as if no blood had flowed through it for centuries. The blade cut a clean line down the creature's spine, the light illuminating the vertebrae beneath as he descended.
The adventurer continued his descent, the light sword leaving a trail of shimmering particles in its wake. The moment he felt the oppressive pull of the dark fog portal at the base of the Wendigo, the swirling darkness that marked the boundary between worlds, he vanished in a flash of light, teleporting instantly. He left behind a spectral afterimage, a fleeting impression of his form outlined in shimmering light, a testament to the suddenness of his departure.
The scene shifted abruptly to the interior of the Wendigo's skull, specifically the hollow of its right eye socket. Dust and fragments of bone swirled within the cavity, disturbed by the sudden shift in air pressure caused by the adventurer's teleportation. Then, an unnatural phenomenon began to occur. The dust and bone fragments began to gather, drawn together by an unseen force. They coalesced, not into a solid mass, but into dancing blue flames, wisps of ethereal fire that flickered and danced within the empty socket. More dust, ice crystals, and even small flakes of snow were drawn into the swirling blue flames, adding to their intensity. The flames began to take shape, forming a rough humanoid outline, like a trillion tiny cubes of blue fire assembling themselves. The cubes shifted and rearranged, materializing into a perfect replica of the adventurer, as if he was being reconstructed from pure energy within the Wendigo's skull.
Now fully materialized within the eye socket, the adventurer exhaled a torrent of pure, white-hot flame, the fire erupting from his mouth like a dragon's breath, filling the empty skull cavity with intense heat and light. The Wendigo's empty eye socket, now bathed in the adventurer's flames, began to glow with a malevolent red light. Thin, crimson cracks spread across the bone surrounding the eye socket, like spiderwebs of blood against the bleached white bone. The heat from within was so intense that the surrounding bone began to crack and crumble, small pieces falling away into the swirling fog below.
The adventurer, having accomplished his objective, didn't linger. He leaped out of the glowing eye socket, landing gracefully on a nearby chunk of ice that was still floating amidst the rapidly melting water. He then used the ice as a launchpad to propel himself away from the Wendigo, escaping the immediate vicinity of the monstrous creature and the warped gravity that surrounded it. The scene then cuts to the other adventurers or mages to see their reaction to this sudden intervention and the effect it has on the wendigo.
