Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Inferno Wolf
The underdog wolves charged toward the Inferno Wolf with a contrived attack.
The voice of the Inferno Wolf was mocking. "Such fools," it muttered. And with a mere flick of its claw, it unleashed yet another fiery wave that incinerated the air-walking wolves.
The fire wolves howled in ecstatic approval, hungrily thirsty for more bloodshed.
But it was short-lived.
A blinding column of fire hit the ground from high above, cutting through the air in wild frenzy. Even the Inferno Wolf, less compared to its power, did flake on moments of bombshell heat.
Luke crashed down, full of fury, blowing wide-eyed before a wolf.
"Inferno Wolf!" Luke shouted, his voice a striding magnet, "how dare you assault my territory, steal my Flame Vein, and insult my wolves? Your doom is sealed."
"The Inferno Wolf growled, masking its dread with bravado. "You're just some lowly Commander. You don't scare me."
Luke did not hesitate. With his wings flaring, the temperature plunged as he called on a whirlwind of ice and fire.
Panic took flight in the eyes of the Inferno Wolf's subordinates, their giant clutches shattered, their rebellious power turned blood-curdling.
It was a viciously short duel. Dual mastery of elements from Luke was sufficient to crush the Inferno Wolf. The once-proud wolf crumpled like charcoals at his feet in a matter of minutes.
Luke stood, toweringly above the discarded beast, his voice cold and frosty. "Let this serve as a lesson to all that dare challenge me: my Flame Vein is mine and mine alone. Mark my words, as my wrath will befall on you should you cross me."
Dust settled, the survivors heard Luke: "Attend this in the name of healing. Fortify the Flame Vein: This territory is sacred; you have no right to encroach."
The howls rose, dissolving any doubt about the loyalties directed on him.
Zach stood fixated in awe and unease as Luke rode slowly back into the valley.
"An empire, huh?" Zach murmured under his breath. "Maybe this wolf might actually do it."
The Nanling Mountains were plagued by innumerable demon clans striving for power and dominance. Of these clans, the Fire Demon Wolf Clan had the largest numbers. It comprised three commander-level Wolf Kings, where, following powerful monarchs and other high-ranking demon kings, came the Flame Demon Wolf-a great commander of tortured terror.
By comparison to the Fire Demon Wolves, where Luke reigned aplenty, the Skywing Wolf Clan was a nondescript clan; ordinarily, they would not dare to provoke the Fire Demon Wolves.
However, these were not normal times anymore.
Luke released two streams of flames that clashed against one another in the sky. Lightning erupted from the collision, showering the Fire Demon Wolves below with a glorious rain of fiery rainstone.
Human magic spun off from demonic totem power, smoothly mimicking their raw strength in refined form for human usage. But Luke unleashed a torrent that was no ordinary human spell, an authentic instance of demonic magic. It had power rivaling that of any celestial-advanced fire spell, such as the Celestial Flame Funeral.
Fiery rainstones rained down with grim precision. Each hit a Fire Demon Wolf, stripping the ground clean. Not even the elite warlords among the Fire Demon Wolves were able to withstand them. Soon, smoldering remains left behind the pride of the Fire Demon Wolf Clan served as an environmental tribute.
The Inferno Wolf stood at the head of the attacking Fire Demon Wolves and let out a growl as it realized how serious the situation was. The Inferno Wolf-every hair on its body ablaze with a solid crimson hue-was outraged. It barely noticed the first fireball before the rainstone barrage obliterated its troops.
The Inferno Wolf, once furious, was now panicky as it scanned its surroundings. Among the hundred of the one-eyed wolves and ten bone spur wolves Luke had stationed in the Flame Vein, only about a dozen of the one-eyed wolves remained. Not only had the elite demon wolves of the Fire Demon Wolf Clan been extinguished, but Luke also suffered devastating losses.
"How dare you!" the Inferno Wolf snarled, fire spewing from its mouth. But it was ill-prepared for the next disaster.
Luke spread his wings wide behind him, the azure and black feathers glimmering with traces of power. With almost a flick, he conjured a whirlwind of wind blades.
