Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Bloodthirsty Frenzy
"Zach," Luke said, interrupting his thoughts. The Skywing Wolf approached with an exaggerated yawn; his long hair caught the alpine breeze. "Do you truly believe that humans will only survive as long as the demons do not unite?"
Zach turned his head and scowled at Luke. "What do you suggest? Humans are far stronger than you give them credit for. With organizations such as the Holy City and Parthenon, and the existence of magical councils across continents. Even in Huaxia, we have our Northern and Southern Military Divisions and the Judgment Society, both strong units."
Luke flashed a huge grin as his gaze scanned the demon wolf legions. "Impressive. But do you really think they can withstand the true might of the Demon Empire?"
He made a wide gesture. "Take my demon wolves for example. With sufficient training, they would flatten an entire city, such as Bo City, in their path without a sweat. And that is the lightest of things. Monarch-level Wolf Kings of Nanling could wipe out your military divisions by themselves. And then there's the Wolf Emperor, whose power is enough to wipe out your entire Southern Military Region."
Zach shut up at this, frowning. He could not deny Luke's words completely. As strong as humanity's suitors at the highest levels were, their victories over emperor-level demons were few and far between. Most of their stories of triumph would be told of survival, and never a conquest.
"Okay, you make a very valid point," Zach grumbled. "But humans inherently have their population ever-adding. That gives our race a lifeline of survival."
Luke chuckled at the response. "Haven't you heard that saying—'fatten the pigs before slaughter'? Humans are simply livestock brought into this world to be consumed."
Zach felt insulted with that statement; his face darkened but words still failed him to argue.
Their conversation was interrupted by the commotion near the entrance to the valley. A wolf with bone spikes raced towards them, its fur clothed in blood, its whole body scorched by wounds.
Luke observed with an eagle eye the wolf; it was one of the sentinels that patrolled the Flame Vein.
"Wounded," said Luke, going up closer. The wolf's injuries were severe: broken spines were protruding in odd angles, and a stench of burnt fur littered the air.
"It has been 'attacked'," Luke concluded. His expression hardened. "And I thought the demons of Nanling would be more... courteous."
The wolf howled away, totally ignoring Luke's orders to go find Zoe for help.
The urgency of his cries made Luke's blood boil. "Damn wolf," he growled. "So you come knocking on my door, huh? So be it; you have chosen death."
He bolted from his position; wings unfurled, he went up into the air toward the Flame Vein.
The invader was now revealed as the Inferno Wolf, large and reddish, its very fur seemingly alive with elemental fire. It reclined haughtily on a boulder near the vein, its jaws unleashing dark red flames in a feeble attempt to frighten the eyeless sentries standing post at the entrance.
Clearly, the wolf showed intent: to coerce weaker wolves into digging out the Flame Spirit Seed from the depths of the vein.
The flame aura of the Spirit Seed was boundless, portraying the spirit's exceedingly powerful nature. Luke could not even handle it directly, and these slave-level wolves could never endure being burned by its flames.
"Move faster, you miserable mutts!" snarled the Inferno Wolf, a sadistic grin plastered on its face, bared teeth all set.
But the eyeless ones, derelict yet defiant, would not obey. Their single laser-like eyeless orbs glowed bright red as they activated the racial ability called Bloodthirsty Frenzy.
