Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Joker
After Adam finished speaking, an awkward tension filled the laboratory.
Bruce Wayne, in particular, looked like he wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear.
After a long silence, Bruce coughed awkwardly and said, "Adam, this isn't cosplay. I'm Batman. Cool, right?"
Adam rolled his eyes.
He hadn't expected Bruce Wayne to be so hung up on this point.
While Adam had always admired Batman, the reality of seeing his idol fumbling with explanations made him suddenly lose interest.
"Maybe," Adam said flatly. "But let's get back to the main point."
He pointed at the screen.
"Who's this?"
The screen displayed a pale face with red lips and green hair—the unmistakable image of Joker.
Bruce Wayne's expression turned serious the moment he saw it.
"That's Joker," Bruce said grimly. "A madman. A lawless criminal."
Although Adam already knew who Joker was, he pretended not to and waited for Bruce to explain.
Bruce took a deep breath before continuing.
Gotham City was a place plagued by crime and corruption—a city of sin. But ever since he became Batman, Bruce had managed to improve security and bring a semblance of order to the chaos.
Just as he was starting to feel proud of the changes he had made, Joker appeared.
The man with the painted smile and crazed eyes turned Gotham's fragile order upside down.
The first time Joker showed up, he robbed a bank in broad daylight, humiliating law enforcement and sending a message to the city's so-called protectors.
He followed that up with a crime spree so chaotic and destructive that Gotham was left reeling.
Even Batman wasn't spared from Joker's madness.
Unlike most of the superpowered criminals Bruce had faced, Joker had no special abilities. And yet, he was far more dangerous than any of them.
Bruce still vividly remembered his last encounter with Joker.
It had started at the docks, where Bruce was tracking a drug shipment.
Using his superior combat skills, he quickly subdued the dealers and was about to hand them over to the authorities when he heard a strange sound—
Clap. Clap. Clap.
Bruce turned sharply to see Joker stepping out of the shadows, dressed in his signature purple tuxedo, green hair slicked back, and a crazed smile plastered on his face.
Bruce instinctively moved to take him down, but Joker raised a red detonator and began tossing it between his hands.
"Oooh, I wouldn't do that if I were you, Batman," Joker said, grinning wildly.
Bruce froze.
Joker was insane enough to actually plant bombs—and the area nearby was filled with residential buildings.
"What do you want?" Bruce demanded.
Joker burst into laughter, his body twisting unnaturally as he spoke.
"Batman, let's play a game," he said. "I planted twenty bombs near the docks. You've got five minutes to find and disarm them all."
"And if I can't?" Bruce asked cautiously.
Joker's grin widened.
"Then boom!"
Before Joker could finish speaking, Bruce launched three batarangs, shattering the detonator in Joker's hand.
Bruce lunged forward, engaging Joker in hand-to-hand combat. Despite Joker's high intelligence, Bruce quickly gained the upper hand.
But just as Bruce was about to subdue him, Joker started laughing hysterically.
"Ha…ha…hah… Batman," Joker wheezed, "you've only got three minutes now…"
Bruce's heart sank.
He shot Joker a glare before rushing to the Batmobile to locate and disarm the bombs.
But when he returned to the docks after completing the task, Joker—and the tied-up drug dealers—had vanished without a trace.
Bruce concluded his story with a heavy sigh.
Adam nodded thoughtfully.
Joker was indeed Gotham's most troublesome villain—not because he had superpowers, but because he was completely unhinged.
Joker's sole purpose seemed to be proving that the world was chaotic and dark.
And with his high intelligence, knowledge of explosives, and ability to manipulate others, Joker had become a nightmare even for Batman.
Seeing Bruce's grim expression, Adam spoke up.
"Do you want to find him?"
Bruce snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Adam in surprise.
"What?"
"I said—do you want to find him?" Adam repeated.
"Of course I do," Bruce replied. "But Joker's a master at hiding. I haven't been able to track him at all."
Bruce shook his head.
Joker wasn't just a madman—he was a criminal mastermind. Even with Bruce's vast resources, he had never been able to pin Joker down.
The city's outdated infrastructure didn't help either. Nearly 40% of Gotham lacked surveillance cameras, and its underground drainage system was a labyrinth.
Even with AI, Bruce doubted Joker could be tracked.
"Thanks for the offer, Adam," Bruce said. "But Joker's too well-hidden. I'll find him myself."
Bruce's voice was firm, but Adam rolled his eyes.
Courageous—but stupid.
How long would Bruce have to wait for Joker to make his next move?
By then, countless lives could already be lost.
If Bruce didn't have the protagonist's plot armor, Adam suspected Joker might have already killed him by now.
Besides, Bruce clearly underestimated artificial intelligence.
Adam's AI was leagues beyond anything Bruce had ever seen, but the man still treated it like a fancy search engine.
"Fine," Adam muttered under his breath, watching Bruce's determined expression.
"Go ahead and keep playing your game of cat and mouse."
But as Bruce turned away, Adam's lips curled into a confident smile.
Joker wouldn't be able to hide forever.
Not with Skynet watching.
