This was a government-funded orphanage that housed dozens of children. The oldest were about thirteen or fourteen, while the youngest were still infants swaddled in blankets.
One of those infants was currently wailing in the arms of a caretaker. The baby's cries echoed through the activity room, shrill and unrelenting. Whether it was from hunger or fear, the sound grated on everyone's nerves.
"Shut it!"
A bald man stormed over, leveling a rifle at the caretaker. His eyes glinted with malice.
"Make that brat stop crying, or I'll shut all of you up for good!"
The young caretaker's knees buckled, her face pale as she clutched the child closer. Before she could stammer a reply, a woman in her early thirties stepped forward. Tall and poised, she wore a sleek office outfit complete with black stockings, exuding an air of authority.
"Give the baby to me," she said, her voice steady.
Taking the infant, she deftly examined the child and declared, "The baby's hungry. If you want him to stop crying, you'll need to let me get some food for him."
The bald man sneered. "Not a chance! Babies drink milk, don't they? There are enough of you here—can't one of you handle that?"
"God, this racket is driving me insane!" His face twisted with rage as he raised his rifle. "To hell with it! I'll kill the little bastard myself!"
"Stop!"
The woman in stockings immediately shielded the baby with her own body.
Just then, two golden beams of light pierced through the ceiling. The energy bolts drilled into the bald man's head, exited through his torso, and scorched the floor below.
The room fell silent for a heartbeat. Then the light disappeared, leaving behind two small holes in the ground and a lifeless body crumpling to the floor.
Another pair of beams cut through the air, swiftly dispatching a second criminal.
Before anyone could process what was happening, a figure descended outside the activity room window.
Golden locks caught the afternoon sun, shining like a radiant flame. Clad in a black battle suit that contrasted sharply with the brilliance of his hair, the man exuded an air of invincibility. His mere presence brought an overwhelming sense of security.
Though his back was to them, everyone in the room recognized him.
"Homelander!"
"He's here to save us!"
Cheers erupted from the children, their voices brimming with excitement.
Hearing the commotion behind him, Homelander turned his head, a dazzling smile lighting up his face. He pressed a finger to his lips in a gesture for silence, then strode purposefully toward the front courtyard.
---
In the courtyard, the remaining criminals were holed up on the first floor of the orphanage's main building, oblivious to what had just transpired in the activity room.
It wasn't until the sniper stationed on the rooftop spotted Homelander strolling casually into view that alarm bells rang.
"Homelander! It's Homelander! He's coming from the activity room!" the sniper yelled into his radio.
The others froze in shock.
"Damn it! I told you we shouldn't have left just two men guarding the hostages!"
The sniper's panic was short-lived. A sudden burst of blinding light engulfed him. Before he could cry out, two golden beams cut through his head, ending him instantly.
Homelander scanned the building, grinning as he noticed the criminals scrambling around inside. His eyes glowed as he unleashed precision heat vision, each beam striking its target with unerring accuracy thanks to his "Absolute Precision" ability.
Within moments, several bodies crumpled to the ground inside the building.
But the criminals weren't giving up just yet. A cluster of grenades was tossed from the building, landing near Homelander.
He raised an eyebrow, folding his arms across his chest. As smoke billowed from the grenades, he turned toward the activity room and flashed a "victory" sign to reassure the hostages.
However, something was amiss.
Instead of detonating, the grenades released plumes of strange gas that rapidly enveloped him. The thick smoke soon obscured his figure entirely.
Moments later, Homelander emerged from the smoke, soaring into the air. He surveyed the scene from above, chuckling.
"Really? You think tear gas is going to stop me?"
Hovering high above, he called out mockingly, "Come on, send out your leader. I don't have time to play hide-and-seek."
As the words left his mouth, Homelander suddenly wavered in midair. His body dipped unexpectedly, and he barely managed to stabilize himself before crashing to the ground.
"What the hell?"
He frowned and attempted to take flight again, but his body remained earthbound.
Perplexed, Homelander tried firing his heat vision. His eyes glowed faintly before dimming like a dying bulb. The beams sputtered out before they could even form.
Then, a gunshot rang out.
Homelander jerked slightly as a sniper round struck his shoulder. Though the bullet flattened and fell to the ground without penetrating his skin, he felt a sting of pain—a sensation he hadn't experienced since arriving in this world.
His powers were fading. It felt as though he were Superman facing Kryptonite—his invincibility slipping away.
"This is impossible!"
A voice broke through his disbelief.
"What's the matter, oh mighty Homelander?"
A man swaggered out of the building, a gas mask obscuring his face.
"Why don't you show me those fancy laser eyes? Oh wait, you can't, can you?"
The man's laughter echoed across the courtyard.
"Record this! Make sure everyone sees it—the almighty savior brought low by me, the Lizard!"
Homelander's gaze shifted to the lingering smoke.
"What's in that gas? Where did you get it?"
The Lizard chuckled darkly. "Why should I tell you? Take that curiosity to your grave. Open fire!"
The criminals unloaded their weapons into the smoke, riddling the area with bullets.
Outside, the police exchanged uneasy glances, unsure of what was happening.
Meanwhile, news reporters broadcast the unfolding drama.
"Homelander has engaged the criminals," one anchor announced. "We believe he'll resolve the situation shortly."
After several tense seconds, the gunfire ceased. Smoke continued to obscure the building, leaving the situation inside unclear.
Inside the orphanage, the Lizard squinted at the dissipating smoke.
"He's dead for sure. The superpower suppressor worked. With this, we don't have to fear any of those damned superheroes."
Just as he finished gloating, a figure burst out of the smoke.
It was Homelander.
Even without his powers, his sheer physicality was enough. He barreled into the building, tackling the Lizard to the ground.
Fists flew as Homelander unleashed a relentless barrage of punches, pummeling the man into submission.
As the Lizard reeled from the assault, his gaze shifted behind Homelander.
A shadow loomed, and a glint of dark steel flashed toward the base of Homelander's neck.
