Chapter 36
Chapter 36: Liu Yuqing’s Wardrobe Malfunction! Preparing to Hit the Police Station!
Returning to the driver’s seat, Jiang Cheng glanced at the gas station Jarvis had pinpointed. It was about 15 kilometers away. Looking out the window, he realized that they had unknowingly left the Huarong District and officially entered the Haibin District.
The infection here was just as severe, with survivors hiding in their homes. Those who spotted the armored vehicle from their windows all stared intently at it, while Jiang Cheng also noticed zombies lurking in the shadows.
“Roar … Grrr …”
As the armored vehicle appeared, several zombies growled and emerged from the shadows. However, Jiang Cheng was driving at high speed, so by the time these zombies started gathering, they were already far behind.
“Mm …”
At that moment, a soft murmur came from the rear compartment. Liu Yuqing, who was lying on the bed, rubbed her sleepy eyes and looked around in a daze.
Realizing that she was lying on a bed, Liu Yuqing was startled and immediately sat up. But as soon as she noticed Jiang Cheng’s figure in the driver’s seat, her tense expression relaxed.
At the same time, she noticed that her clothes had somehow slipped to one side.
She had exposed herself!
When she thought back, she realized it must have been Jiang Cheng who had carried her to the bed. Her cheeks instantly flushed with embarrassment. She quickly adjusted her clothes, choosing to ignore the fact that the vehicle’s interior had somehow expanded and now included a bed.
It wasn’t until she finished adjusting her clothes and got off the bed to move to the front passenger seat that she noticed the change. “Did he switch vehicles while I was asleep?”
“Are you okay?”
Jiang Cheng, who was driving the armored vehicle toward the gas station ahead, glanced at her and noticed the expression on her face. He could tell she was puzzled, but he didn’t offer any explanation.
The memory of the massive explosion caused by the oil tanker was still fresh in Liu Yuqing’s mind. Fortunately, apart from passing out for a while, she didn’t feel any discomfort after waking up.
Liu Yuqing shook her head slightly. “I’m fine.”
“That’s good,” Jiang Cheng nodded. “You should rest a bit more. We might need to fight soon.”
“Fight?”
Seeing that Jiang Cheng wasn’t planning to explain why the armored vehicle had changed so much, she set aside her curiosity and doubts without asking further. However, she didn’t quite understand what Jiang Cheng meant by “fight.” Wasn’t the original plan to go to the Hilton Hotel near the bridge for a night’s rest?
She knew about their plan to head to Donghai City—after all, there was no reason to keep that from her. But why were they suddenly talking about fighting?
Noticing her confusion, Jiang Cheng smiled slightly. “Yes, I’m planning to raid a police station.”
“Raid a police station?”
Liu Yuqing’s eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly understood what he meant. “You mean you want to get some real guns, right?”
In this world now, having firearms would definitely give them an advantage! She had already witnessed the power of that heavy nail gun, which was comparable to a light sniper rifle.
But after all, a nail gun is still a nail gun, and it can’t compare to the real thing in terms of usability or the powerful deterrence of a true firearm.
“Exactly. But there are three evolved zombies around the police station, so we need to prepare before heading there,” Jiang Cheng explained his plan briefly.
The rest of the journey was uneventful. They only had to take a detour, which turned what should have been a ten-minute drive into a half-hour one. Finally, the gas station that Jarvis had located came into view.
This gas station was much smaller than the one in the Shangbin District, but the number of abandoned vehicles crowding the area was no less. The ground was littered with severed limbs and corpses, far too many to count. After all, this road was one of the main routes leading to the bridge.
If Jarvis hadn’t informed him that the gas station still had fuel, Jiang Cheng wouldn’t have believed it, given the scene before him.
Beep—
As the armored vehicle approached the gas station, Jiang Cheng didn’t stop immediately. Just as before, he circled around a few times, honking the horn to draw out all the nearby zombies.
A total of more than seventy zombies—men and women, old and young, all covered in dried blood, with some of them already beginning to rot—began closing in from all directions. They roared and pounded on the vehicle’s doors and windows, with some even climbing onto the hood of the armored vehicle.
The sight was truly terrifying!
Handing control of the vehicle to Jarvis, Jiang Cheng opened the sunroof, pulled out his modified nail gun, and began swiftly taking down the zombies.
Meanwhile, Liu Yuqing, armed with a watermelon knife, stabbed through the gaps in the windows, piercing the skulls of the zombies one by one.
Five minutes later!
The two of them had successfully dealt with all the zombies.
“This feeling is really unpleasant …” Liu Yuqing retracted her watermelon knife, her face slightly pale. It was her first time facing zombies up close like this.
“You’ll get used to it eventually.”
Jiang Cheng set the nail gun aside and took back control of the vehicle. He then drove the armored car into the gas station, pushing aside the surrounding wrecked vehicles to park it.
“You go grab the employee card to refuel the armored car. I’ll check out the convenience store and bring back some portable fuel cans.”
“Got it!” Liu Yuqing responded, opening the car door and stepping out with Jiang Cheng. Immediately, a strong stench of rot hit them, flooding their noses.
It was only then that they noticed the scattered corpses around them. In just over a day, the bodies had already begun to decompose, emitting a pungent, nauseating odor.
“Is it because of the summer heat?”
Jiang Cheng frowned as he gradually got used to the stench.
“Probably. At temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, decomposition starts within just over three hours. Even though the temperature these past two days hasn’t been that high, it’s not far off.” Liu Yuqing nodded, fighting back the nausea caused by the stench.
“Let’s get to work.”
Jiang Cheng turned his attention away from the corpses and called out to Liu Yuqing before heading toward the convenience store.
“Okay.”
Liu Yuqing answered, then walked toward the bodies of several gas station employees lying on the ground, searching for an employee card.
Just like the other rotting corpses, these employees’ bodies were also heavily decayed. Some of them even had maggots crawling in and out of their bodies, eyes, and bellies.
Sigh …
Taking a deep breath to steady herself and suppressing the urge to vomit, Liu Yuqing scanned their bodies. Finally, she found the employee card on one of the employees’ chests.
The employee’s body was already extensively decomposed, with maggots crawling all over it. The old Liu Yuqing would have run away in fear, but now, she simply pressed her lips together, used her watermelon knife to carefully pick up the employee card, and wrapped it in a cloth before taking it.
