Chapter 23: Without Ten Years of Brain Damage, No One Would Even Think of This Question!
As Jiang Cheng processed all this information, a plan gradually formed in his mind.
Returning to the restaurant, he found that everything had already been cleaned up. Jiang Cheng grabbed a bottle of water and tossed it to Liu Yuqing, who was sitting and resting on a chair.
“Get a good rest tonight; tomorrow we’re leaving this place!”
Leaving this place?
Liu Yuqing was slightly taken aback as she caught the water, but she quickly understood Jiang Cheng’s meaning.
Although the supermarket had enough supplies to sustain them for more than half a year, the situation outside was dire. Not only were there many zombies around the supermarket, but these zombies could even evolve. Staying here would be akin to sitting around and waiting to die!
“Tomorrow, we’ll load as many supplies onto the car as possible. Also, I’ve noticed that zombies seem to dislike sunlight; they’re less active during the day, and their numbers decrease. So, we’ll set off tomorrow morning after the sun comes up.”
“Okay, I understand!”
Liu Yuqing agreed without hesitation. Jiang Cheng then discussed with her some things they needed to be mindful of once they left the supermarket the next day.
“It’s getting late; we should rest soon!”
It was already past midnight, and they needed to get some rest while they could. Tomorrow, once they left this place, they might not have such a good opportunity to rest again.
However, after everything that had happened today—from the harrowing escape to the numerous killings in the supermarket—it had been both terrifying and exhilarating. Their clothes were already soaked with sweat, so they needed to wash up before resting.
After all, in the future, they might not even have the chance to rest, let alone take a bath.
Fortunately, there was hot water on the fifth floor, but as for things like showers, those were out of the question. The hot water could only be used by filling basins for bathing.
Fortunately, there were still places to block the view. After all, the fifth floor sold food, appliances, and clothing, so there were plenty of places to shield oneself from sight.
Jiang Cheng didn’t care about any of this; as long as he could wash, that was good enough. Moreover, it was summer, and the nighttime temperature was still around 20 degrees Celsius.
With his current physical condition, even using cold water wouldn’t be a problem. As for covering up, that was even less of an issue—he was a grown man, so what was there to be concerned about?
But for Liu Yuqing, it was her first time bathing in such an environment, and since she was a girl, she couldn’t help but blush a little.
After a quick bath, Jiang Cheng found a fitting summer outfit in a brand-name clothing section on the fifth floor. He lit a cigarette, leaned against a window, and looked down at the zombies on the street below and the survivors in the nearby apartment buildings who still had their lights on and hadn’t yet gone to sleep.
“Unless something unexpected happens, these survivors probably don’t stand much of a chance.”
There wasn’t much food in the apartment complexes to begin with. If they continued to stay there, they would either die from hunger or thirst if they didn’t get killed by the zombies.
After smoking two cigarettes, Jiang Cheng felt his whole body relax.
At this moment, Liu Yuqing, who had also finished bathing, walked over.
“Jiang Cheng, I’m done washing!”
Liu Yuqing stood beside him, her gaze also directed at the zombies below and the survivors in the nearby buildings.
Seeing Liu Yuqing, who had just bathed, with her hair still wet, wearing a light summer dress, and her fair skin glowing with a hint of pink, Jiang Cheng’s eyes lit up.
Her long, straight black hair was still damp, and though the dress was loose, it couldn’t hide her alluring figure. Perhaps because she enjoyed exercising, Liu Yuqing’s figure was just right—long legs, a slim waist, and, well, a perfect chest …
In two words: simply perfect!
No wonder Third Brother and his group were so eager to have her!
Feeling slightly parched, Jiang Cheng naturally averted his gaze, picked up a bottle of water beside him, and took a sip to calm himself down a bit.
Given the current situation, it wasn’t the time to be thinking about such things!
Liu Yuqing didn’t notice she was being ogled. She was looking at the zombies on the street, her brows slightly furrowed. “Do you think these zombies would starve to death if they never find food?”
“We’d have to catch one and let an expert study it to know for sure.”
“I think they would. After all, no creature can defy the law of conservation of energy.” Liu Yuqing added again.
“Without ten years of brain damage, no one would even think of this question!”
Jiang Cheng lit another cigarette, took a deep drag, and couldn’t help but laugh.
“This question isn’t completely useless. If these zombies starve to death after a while without food, then we wouldn’t have to worry about surviving in the future. After all, we’d just need to find a place to hide for a while, and that’d be it,” Liu Yuqing explained again.
“Would you dare take that risk?” Jiang Cheng gave her a faint look.
“… No, I wouldn’t.” Liu Yuqing was momentarily stunned before she shook her head.
“Then that settles it. Instead of thinking about such things, it’s better to get some rest while you can.”
Jiang Cheng stood up, ready to head to the employee rest area in the restaurant to sleep.
“You’re right!”
Liu Yuqing nodded and turned to get some rest as well.
“Ah—” Suddenly, a scream shattered the quiet of the street.
“It came from over there!”
Jiang Cheng and Liu Yuqing immediately rushed back to the window and looked towards a residential building at the northwest corner of the supermarket.
The scream had come from that building! specifically from the rooftop of the thirty-story building! Although the building was quite far, making the scream faint by the time it reached them, it was still incredibly jarring in the dead of night, making it crystal clear to their ears.
Looking at the residential building! Jiang Cheng recalled that there were quite a few survivors in that building! but now a scream had come from the rooftop of the thirty-story building.
In the next moment, before he and Liu Yuqing could take a closer look, a young couple jumped off the rooftop.
Thud! Thud!
Beep beep beep—
The sound of two bodies hitting the ground echoed, followed by a series of car alarms blaring from the surrounding vehicles.
Immediately afterward, Jiang Cheng and Liu Yuqing saw all the zombies in the building go berserk!
At the same time!
The zombies wandering aimlessly on the nearby streets also turned their heads in unison towards the building. Then, as if they had gone mad, they roared and charged into the building.
In no time, the building was overrun!
The survivors on each floor were either screaming, jumping out of windows, or being infected and transformed into zombies by the intruding hordes.
This commotion sent the other survivors in nearby buildings into a panic. They hurriedly turned off their lights, not daring to make a sound, fearing that their building would be the next to fall.
Jiang Cheng and Liu Yuqing, who were still inside the supermarket, crouched down and carefully observed the situation.
As for the lights in the supermarket, Jiang Cheng had Jarvis, who had already taken control of the supermarket’s power system, turn them off.
Ten minutes later!
Under Jiang Cheng and Liu Yuqing’s watchful eyes, a strong man used all his strength to push a massive zombie, at least three meters tall, off the balcony of an apartment on the twentieth-something floor of the complex.
They both fell together, crashing to the ground and turning into two piles of mangled flesh.
