Chapter 27: Prelude to the Chunins
Riku was on his way to the Hidden Stone Village when he noticed an explosion in the far-off distance. After a while, the tremors from the explosion reached him, causing the sandy landscape to vibrate. He immediately stopped his journey, pondering whether he should continue his route or not.
"If I don't head to the Hidden Stone Village to complete the transaction, then my betrayal would have served as nothing," he thought, weighing his options. After waiting for a while and not moving from his spot, he couldn't help but notice the quietness now. "Should I proceed? Maybe I should send a shadow clone," he pondered, sitting down to think.
"Quite the spectacle, don't you think?" A group of what looked like nomads approached Riku. An old man in particular reached out to Riku as he asked the question. Alarmed at first, Riku then let down his guard and responded, "I'm sorry?" He took his hand off his weapon pouch.
"Those lights that were going on earlier. We were on higher planes, so we saw them perfectly. Do you think it was a meteor, young man?" the old man asked.
"Ahh, right. You startled me for a second. I apologize. I'm afraid I can't say otherwise. I could only feel the tremors left by whatever caused such explosions," Riku answered.
"Oh, no need to apologize. I'm sure we must've startled you. I'm Kento, and behind me is my family. It's a pleasure to meet you," the old man introduced himself, bowing slightly.
"It's a pleasure," Riku responded.
"A rude fellow, aren't ya?" an old lady remarked, seeing that Riku didn't introduce himself.
"Now, now, Mirai. Judging by this young man's attire, he's probably one of them Shinobi, so it's perfectly normal if he's wary about giving out his name," the old man said. Riku responded with an awkward smile, going along with Kento's explanation.
"I'm afraid I won't be able to entertain you any longer. I'm in a hurry, you see," Riku said, smiling slightly.
"It's fine. You don't have to make excuses for your work. It was good meeting you, young man. We'll also be heading our way," the old man said, as it seemed they were heading in opposite directions.
"Hmpf," Mirai scoffed as she followed along. Riku, now turning towards the Hidden Stone, walked forward. As he took a step, a cold chill ran down his spine.
"Can't you just stay for a little while?" the old man's voice said, transitioning into a young boy's voice. A kunai was held at Riku's throat. He couldn't believe what had just happened. "An ambush," he thought, paralyzed as he stood. He could only hope for the best. He had no idea it was Daniel, who he'd met with a little bit of transformation jutsu and shadow clone jutsu. Daniel had masqueraded as the group of nomads Riku had met, and as soon as he turned his back, it was already gg.
"Hmm. According to the standard time, this mission is supposed to take me a couple of weeks, resulting in me barely arriving before the Chunin Exams start. My clone is currently training under Hiruzen, so I have some time on my hands," Daniel pondered after he had just speed-run his entire mission with extra steps.
Back in Konoha, in the Hokage's office, the instructor Jonin had gathered for a discussion about the upcoming Chunin Exams. "Do any of you have any genin you would like to recommend?" Hiruzen asked the instructors.
"I'll sit this one out. Mine aren't ready, and the only one I'd recommend... well, I think your judgment would be better," Nana started, as a silence dwelled among the Jonin.
"Yeah, my squad still needs time," another Jonin added, followed by a few more instructors voicing similar opinions regarding their teams.
"Hmmm. With that one, I can personally approve his fit for the test, but it's a shame your other squad members aren't ready yet," Hiruzen commented.
"Yes, although the girl is showing the greatest progress, it's still too early," Nana replied.
"I see. Well, what about you, Kakashi, Asuma, and Kurenai?" Hiruzen shifted his gaze, stroking his beard. "Kurenai, you may begin."
"Yes. Team Eight, which consists of Hyuga Hinata, Aburame Shino, and Inuzuka Kiba, I would like to recommend them for the exams," she responded.
"I, as well, leader of Team Ten, which consists of Yamanaka Ino, Nara Shikamaru, and Akimichi Choji, would like to recommend them for the Chunin Exams," Asuma followed.
"I too, leader of Team Seven, which consists of Uchiha Sasuke, Uzumaki Naruto, and Haruno Sakura, would like to recommend them for the Chunin Exams," Kakashi added, as all three recommended their teams.
As they finished their recommendations, Iruka protested, just like in the original story. "With all due respect, I don't think the decision to recommend them requires your input. We've been taking those kids on missions and got to see how capable they are in real-life situations," Kakashi responded to Iruka's protest.
"And besides, I may sound a bit uncouth here, but Iruka," Kakashi added, catching Iruka's attention.
"Ha?" Iruka responded.
"It's simply none of your business," Kakashi stated, ending the debate with a heavy mood.
After the meeting concluded, Hiruzen requested Kakashi to stay for a bit. "I remember that Naruto also trained with that boy from time to time," Hiruzen remarked. "I want to know what you think."
"Pardon?" Kakashi responded, slightly taken aback.
"Young Daniel, what do you think of him?" Hiruzen asked, his eyes keenly observing Kakashi.
"Well, from what I've heard, he seems to be a talented fellow and a good teacher. Naruto is actually performing better than his attitude displays," Kakashi replied thoughtfully. "But I don't see why you would want my opinion."
"It's nothing. Nothing at all," Hiruzen responded, a mysterious smile playing on his lips as he dismissed Kakashi.
