Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Overrun Outpost
The group walked out of the forest and stopped at the edge. In front of them was the outpost. It looked broken and empty. A tall fence with barbed wire surrounded the area, but some parts of the fence were torn down. The gate was open, swinging slowly in the wind.
Kato raised his hand, signaling the group to stop. "This is it," he said. "Stay quiet. Stay alert."
Takashi held his shotgun tightly. His heart was beating fast. The outpost felt wrong. It was too quiet, like something was hiding in the shadows.
"Do you think anyone is alive in there?" Rika asked, looking at the dark buildings.
Kato shook his head. "I don't know. But we'll find out soon."
Tanaka crouched down, scanning the area with his binoculars. "I don't see any movement," he said. "But that doesn't mean it's safe."
"We need to check," Kato said. "There might still be supplies."
The group moved closer to the gate, stepping carefully. Every sound felt louder in the silence. The wind rustled through the broken fence, making it creak. Takashi's eyes darted around, searching for any sign of danger.
As they entered the outpost, the smell hit them—rotting flesh and decay. Rika covered her nose with her hand. "It stinks," she said, her voice muffled.
"This place has been dead for a while," Kato said. "Stay close. Don't split up."
They walked through the main yard. Old military vehicles were parked here and there, covered in dirt and rust. Some had smashed windows, and others had bloodstains on the doors.
"Over there," Tanaka whispered, pointing to a small building. "That looks like a storage room."
"Let's check it," Kato said. He led the way, with the others following close behind.
The door to the storage room was slightly open. Kato pushed it gently, and it creaked loudly. Everyone froze, holding their breath. When nothing happened, Kato stepped inside.
The room was small and dark, with shelves lining the walls. Some boxes were stacked in the corner, but most of them were empty or broken.
"Start looking," Kato said. "We need anything we can use—ammo, food, medicine."
Takashi walked to a shelf and started searching. Most of the items were useless—old papers, empty cans, broken tools. But then he saw a small box labeled "First Aid." He opened it and found bandages, painkillers, and antiseptic.
"Found some medicine," he said, holding up the box.
"Good," Kato said. "Keep looking."
Rika found a small box of bullets that fit her crossbow. "This will help," she said, putting them in her bag.
Tanaka picked up a flashlight and tested it. The beam flickered but stayed on. "Not bad," he said. "We might need this."
Suddenly, there was a noise outside—a faint growl. Everyone froze.
"What was that?" Rika whispered, her eyes wide.
Kato raised his rifle. "Stay quiet," he said. "It's not alone."
The growling grew louder, and then the sound of footsteps came from outside. Heavy, uneven footsteps.
"They're here," Tanaka said, his voice tense.
"Back to the yard!" Kato ordered. "Now!"
The group rushed out of the storage room, their weapons ready. As they stepped into the yard, they saw them—zombies, at least ten of them, stumbling through the gate. Their eyes were hollow, and their mouths hung open, dripping with blood.
"Spread out!" Kato shouted. "Take them down!"
Takashi raised his shotgun and fired at the nearest zombie. The blast was loud, echoing through the outpost. The zombie's head snapped back, and it fell to the ground.
Rika fired her crossbow, hitting another zombie in the chest. It slowed down but kept moving. She reloaded quickly and aimed for the head this time.
Kato and Tanaka worked together, taking out zombies one by one with their rifles. But more zombies were coming, pouring through the broken fence.
"There's too many!" Rika yelled, backing up.
"Fall back!" Kato shouted. "Get to higher ground!"
The group ran toward a tall building in the center of the outpost. The door was unlocked, and they pushed inside, slamming it shut behind them.
"Up the stairs!" Kato said.
They climbed to the second floor, where they found a room with windows overlooking the yard. From here, they could see the zombies below, swarming the outpost.
Takashi reloaded his shotgun, his hands shaking. "How do we get out of this?" he asked, breathing hard.
"We'll make a plan," Kato said, looking out the window. "But first, we hold them off. Don't let them get inside."
Rika stood beside Takashi, her crossbow ready. "We've faced worse, right?" she said, trying to sound confident.
Takashi nodded. "Yeah. We'll get through this."
The group prepared for the next wave, knowing that survival would take everything they had. The outpost might have been overrun, but they weren't giving up—not yet.
The sound of growls and pounding on the walls echoed through the building. Takashi's heartbeat thundered in his chest. From the second-floor window, he could see the yard below. The zombies were crowding the entrance, their numbers growing by the second.
Kato moved quickly, checking the room. "Barricade the door," he ordered.
Tanaka nodded and grabbed a nearby table, shoving it against the door. Takashi joined him, pushing hard to make sure it wouldn't budge. Rika grabbed a chair and wedged it under the door handle for extra support.
"That should hold for now," Tanaka said, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Kato pulled out a map he had taken from the storage room. "We need to find a way out of here," he said, spreading the map on the floor. "There's a back gate on the other side of the outpost. If we can reach it, we might escape."
Rika peered out of the window. "The zombies are blocking the yard. We can't go through them," she said.
"There has to be another way," Takashi said, scanning the map. "What about the rooftops? Can we climb across the buildings?"
Kato nodded slowly. "It's risky, but it might work. We'll need to move fast. The noise will draw more of them."
A loud crash came from downstairs, followed by the sound of groaning and scraping.
"They're inside!" Rika said, her voice panicked.
Kato grabbed his rifle. "Get ready. If they make it up here, we'll have to fight."
Takashi tightened his grip on his shotgun. His palms were sweaty, but he tried to steady himself. "We've made it this far," he said. "We're not dying here."
Rika loaded her crossbow, her hands trembling slightly. "Stay close to me," she said to Takashi.
The group waited, listening as the sounds of the zombies grew louder. The door shook as something heavy slammed against it.
"They won't stop," Tanaka said, backing away from the door. "We need to move now."
Kato pointed to a window on the far side of the room. "That leads to the next building," he said. "We'll jump across. It's our best shot."
Takashi looked at the gap between the buildings. It wasn't far, but the height made his stomach churn. "Let's go," he said, forcing himself to stay calm.
Kato smashed the window with the butt of his rifle and cleared the glass. He climbed onto the ledge and looked back at the group. "One at a time," he said. "I'll go first."
With a deep breath, Kato leaped across the gap. He landed on the roof of the next building, rolling to absorb the impact. He stood and waved. "Come on!"
Rika went next. She hesitated for a moment, then jumped. Takashi watched as she landed safely, Kato helping her up.
"Your turn," Tanaka said to Takashi.
Takashi climbed onto the ledge, his legs shaking. He took a deep breath, then jumped. The wind rushed past him, and for a moment, he felt weightless. His feet hit the roof, and he stumbled forward. Kato grabbed his arm, pulling him up.
"Good job," Kato said.
Tanaka was the last to jump. Just as he landed, the door to their room upstairs burst open. Zombies spilled into the room, growling and clawing at the air.
"We need to keep moving!" Rika said, her voice urgent.
The group ran across the rooftop, jumping from one building to the next. Below them, the zombies were gathering, their growls filling the air.
Finally, they reached the last building. Kato looked over the edge. "The back gate is down there," he said. "We'll climb down and make a run for it."
Takashi nodded, his grip on the shotgun tightening. "Let's finish this," he said.
The group climbed down carefully, using an old fire escape. When their feet hit the ground, they sprinted toward the back gate.
The zombies spotted them, and the chase began. The undead were fast, but the group was faster.
Kato reached the gate first and pulled it open. "Go, go, go!" he shouted.
Takashi, Rika, and Tanaka ran through the gate, and Kato followed, slamming it shut behind them.
They didn't stop running until the sounds of the zombies faded into the distance. Finally, they collapsed onto the ground, breathing hard.
"We made it," Rika said, her voice filled with relief.
"But barely," Takashi said, looking back at the outpost. "That was too close."
Kato stood up, brushing dirt off his clothes. "It's not over yet," he said. "But we survived, and that's what matters."
The group nodded, their spirits lifting slightly. They had escaped the outpost, but the fight for survival wasn't over. With every step forward, the danger grew—but so did their determination to live.
