Chapter 10:
Chapter 10: Humble Love 10:
“Oh, Dad, you need to call the bank.”
Inside a sleek black Audi A6, adorned with several passes on the windshield, Chen Nuo, seated in the passenger seat, turned to look at his father, who was driving.
“What’s the matter?”
Since they were stopped at a red light, Chen Zhongguo glanced over, curious.
“The supplementary bank card you gave me was given to Zhang Ya. It needs to be deactivated now.”
Chen Nuo stated plainly.
“Understood.”
Chen Zhongguo nodded and called his bank’s account manager.
A few minutes later, after ending the call, Chen Zhongguo resumed driving.
Chen Nuo turned his gaze to the passing scenery outside.
He had spent a lot of money on Zhang Ya over the years, but her extravagant spending habits meant she had little savings.
With the card now deactivated, she would have to fend for herself.
A cold glimmer flickered in Chen Nuo’s eyes. The next second, he felt a gentle tap on his shoulder from his mother, who was seated in the back.
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
Chen Nuo turned around.
“This card is for you. Use it, and don’t deprive yourself.”
His mother handed him a card, her expression soft and caring.
“…Alright.”
Chen Nuo didn’t want to accept it at first, but seeing the warmth in his mother’s eyes, he took it.
…
“Book me a luxury suite.”
Standing at the reception desk of a five-star hotel in the provincial capital, Zhang Ya spoke with an air of superiority.
She planned to stay there for a few days while waiting for Chen Nuo to call and beg for reconciliation.
Returning to Chen Nuo’s place had never crossed her mind.
This time, she intended to put him in his place.
She had no idea she was already locked out.
“Certainly, madam. How many days will you be staying?”
The receptionist replied politely.
“Three days.”
The respectful demeanor of the staff soothed Zhang Ya’s anger, filling her instead with a sense of vanity.
She relished the way these “lower-class” people treated her.
It made her feel like a superior person.
“That will be 3,299 yuan for three days. Will you be paying by card or cash?”
The receptionist asked after inputting the details into the computer.
“Card.”
Zhang Ya confidently handed over the supplementary bank card Chen Nuo had given her, retrieving it from her luxury purse.
Beep. Beep.
“Madam, this card has been deactivated. You’ll need to use another card.”
The receptionist returned the card with a polite smile.
“Impossible!”
Zhang Ya froze, then instinctively reached for her phone to call Chen Nuo, only to stop herself moments later.
“Use this card.”
With a touch of reluctance, she handed over her own bank card.
Beep. Beep.
“I’m sorry, madam, but there are insufficient funds on this card.”
The receptionist maintained a calm, professional demeanor, but Zhang Ya felt humiliated.
To her, the receptionist’s smile and the stares of other guests in the lobby felt like mocking sneers.
“Impossible. There should still be tens of thousands in that account…”
Her face turned pale. But halfway through her words, she remembered spending a hefty sum on a luxury purse a few days ago using that card when she’d forgotten Chen Nuo’s card at home.
“How much for a standard room?”
Lowering her head, Zhang Ya’s voice trembled slightly as she spoke, avoiding eye contact.
She only had two cards: the deactivated one from Chen Nuo and her own.
“A standard room is 298 yuan per night.”
The receptionist replied.
“Book it for three… two nights.”
Zhang Ya corrected herself quickly.
Beep. Beep.
“Alright, madam. Here’s your room key.”
The successful transaction brought a brief wave of relief.
Snatching the key, she hurried to the elevator, feeling as though everyone’s eyes were mocking her.
This was all Chen Nuo’s fault!
How dare he deactivate the card?
Was this his way of threatening her?
Once inside the elevator, Zhang Ya allowed herself to seethe, her face twisted in rage.
“I’ll make you pay for this!”
Clenching her teeth, she stepped into the standard room listed on her keycard.
The small room, only thirty to forty square meters, made her frown.
Apart from a bedroom and a bathroom, there was nothing else.
Though the furnishings were decent, to Zhang Ya, it felt painfully basic.
During her time with Chen Nuo, she had never stayed in such modest accommodations.
Traveling always meant luxury suites, and home was a spacious, tastefully decorated four-bedroom flat.
“This will do for now. In three days, that useless Chen Nuo will be begging me to take him back!”
Holding her nose, she sat on the bed, feeling completely out of place.
Bzzz.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Her eyes lit up, but when she checked, it wasn’t Chen Nuo. It was her family calling.
Irritation flared.
“Hello, Mom. What is it?”
Zhang Ya answered, her tone harsh and dismissive.
Even with her mother, she maintained a superior attitude, her words dripping with disdain.
“Sweetheart, where’s the 100,000 yuan? Have you talked to that useless Chen Nuo yet? We need the money to finish building the house… ptui.”
Her mother’s thickly-accented voice crackled through the phone, followed by a spitting sound.
It sounded crude and unrefined.
Zhang Ya’s eyebrow furrowed, her face twisting with undisguised disgust and contempt.
