Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Mark Fluctuation
Outside the exam grounds, Jolord and Aejon watched the unfolding battle.
After seeing Richard disembowel the giant, Aejon, who had been overshadowed by Jolord for decades, couldn't help but laugh aloud, "Jolord, your student is done for."
Jolord tugged at his beard, furrowing his brow. As Aejon's old acquaintance, he knew exactly what was about to happen.
On the battlefield, Aejon loved targeting those who relied on physical strength. Whenever such strongmen tore apart his skeletal puppets, they aimed for the beating heart, which was a trap.
When the heart was destroyed, it triggered a spell Aejon loved to leave in it—called "Corrosive Death Mist."
Caught in that spell, even dragonblood creatures would dissolve into blood.
...
Richard thrust his sword, sharply severing the connections to the heart without damaging it.
Of course, having seen the synthetic beast's core, Richard wouldn't destroy something so obviously crucial.
Extracting it would be the proper course.
While the skeletal giant was mostly for show, knowledge was invaluable, and no wizard would have too much of it.
Richard plucked the heart, ready to pursue the necromancer apprentice. Suddenly, a gust from the side prompted him to duck, narrowly dodging a massive fist. Despite losing its core, the giant still moved.
"Hmm? How can it still move?"
Richard frowned, casually pocketing the heart.
This act nearly made Sly cough up blood in frustration.
"How did he know there was a spell in the heart?"
Leaning on his staff, Sly seethed with rage. He had embedded three spells in the heart, waiting for Richard to break it and trigger the trap, then merge him into the skeletal giant.
Instead, he'd lost both his trap and the heart, leaving the giant severely weakened.
The heart wasn't the giant's critical component, but it was a significant energy source. Without it, the giant's magic consumption more than doubled.
"Can't waste any more magic."
Sly waved his staff, directing the giant to retreat.
But before it took two steps, Richard's dark blade sliced through its knee joint, toppling the giant.
"Making a battle puppet humanoid, what were these wizard apprentices thinking?" Richard thought critically.
To him, crafting humanoid battle puppets was amateurish. As Jolord's disciple, known for synthetic beasts, Richard understood them well.
Before becoming energy-circulated battle beasts, humanoid synthetic beasts had significant flaws, the most obvious being balance.
With only two legs, losing one made them unstable immediately.
The same logic applied to the skeletal puppet.
With one leg gone, the puppet lost balance and collapsed.
"Damn," Sly cursed through gritted teeth.
He could rebalance the puppet, but not with Richard ready to dismantle it faster.
"Forget it, stop wasting magic."
This puppet was already a liability. Continuing to fuel it was wasteful, and Sly's magic stones, while substantial, weren't for squandering.
Seeing the puppet cease movement, Richard quickly severed its head and limbs, kicking them away.
This action made Sly grind his teeth.
Richard's tactic meant more magic to repair the puppet.
"Damn brute, I'll show you the power of necromancy."
Saying this, Sly pulled a focus potion from his pouch and downed it, transforming his anger into cold fury.
Wizards could cast spells by inscribing them on their soul or temporarily constructing models. The latter was riskier, prone to failure, causing anything from dizziness to death.
Hence, a focus potion, which calms the mind, became crucial.
"Hand of Death."
Sly, expressionless, cast the spell, summoning a pale purple hand from beneath Richard.
Gripped by the Hand of Death, Richard felt a sudden chill, a slight weakness enveloping him, and even his blood seemed to slow.
"And now, Death Chains."
Sly waved his staff, summoning black chains from below Richard, making him feel trapped in a mire, every movement taxing.
Watching Richard struggle, Sly smirked.
"It's over, brute."
Sly drew a magic stone, channeling its power.
This next spell would be Richard's end... Bang!
A magic barrier enveloped Sly, but his side was suddenly torn apart, revealing a corpse-like body beneath his robes.
"What happened!?"
Sly stared blankly at the sky, where a black death crow circled, seemingly welcoming him to the afterlife.
Meanwhile, Richard surged his inner magic to his heart, causing his bloodline seed to rage.
Boom!
With a powerful heartbeat, Richard dispelled the negative effects.
The surge of strength and life nullified Sly's spells, bringing Richard to Sly's side in an instant.
The tables had turned!
Bang!
Without a word, Richard smashed Sly's head, scattering red and white matter.
Until becoming a full wizard, the head remained every apprentice's weak spot.
Above, Wuni cawed joyfully.
With Sly's death, his collected apprentice marks transferred to Richard.
Sly had accumulated nineteen marks; combined with Richard's four, he now had twenty-three, elevating him to ninth on the leaderboard. The mark on his hand emitted a strong energy pulse, like a lighthouse in the night.
It seemed to signal others: a formidable apprentice here had slain at least twenty.
"Marks have this effect?" Richard mused, scratching his chin.
No wonder the academy didn't cap mark-to-magic stone exchanges; they'd incorporated this feature.
Such a conspicuous energy pulse, even Richard's Cloak of Shadows couldn't hide, let alone others. This signal deterred weaker apprentices from approaching, indirectly curbing slaughter.
For Richard and Sly, most apprentices posed no challenge. Without limits, a month could see them decimate the field.
Though t
he academy's exam was a survival test, this wasn't the intended method.
Meanwhile, a strange silence settled over the viewing hall.
