Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Second Blood Alchemy
Thanks to the timely intervention of the monitors and Ereks' mediation, the incident involving Joseph did not have widespread repercussions. Only a few wizards knew the real reason behind Joseph's disappearance. Following Jolord's advice, Richard moved into the fifty-sixth floor of the central Black Tower, becoming neighbors with Chaxes.
The curse left a significant impact on Richard. Previously, he was focused on learning and exploring knowledge, not in a hurry to enhance his strength. This was partly because knowledge itself is power, and his reclusive lifestyle made him feel secure.
However, Joseph shattered that sense of security.
...
"Intermediate Meditation Method, priced at 200,000 academy coins," the store's automaton announced mechanically.
"Here's the money," Richard handed over a large bundle of academy coins to the automaton.
As Richard's mental power gradually increased, the effects of the basic meditation method waned. Before Joseph's curse, Richard was indifferent to the slow progress.
The academy's bloody exams were years away, and Richard believed he had ample time to advance to an intermediate apprentice using the basic method. He preferred to exchange magic stones for knowledge from Jolord.
For wizards, knowledge is the greatest power, and as long as mental power isn't vastly different, it doesn't matter much.
But now, Richard changed his mind.
Strength is ultimately important.
The intermediate meditation method is several times more effective than the basic one. With its help, Richard could increase his mental power to thirty points within three years.
After storing the scroll from the pneumatic tube, Richard headed to the commercial district to buy materials.
The second blood alchemy process was due.
"Two-headed troll bloodline, 500 magic stones. Thank you for your patronage."
Two-headed trolls are humanoid creatures from the eastern plains of the wizarding world, known for their immense strength and regenerative abilities. According to wizard records, a pureblood adult two-headed troll can regenerate from being cut in half, with both halves becoming whole again.
Richard examined the vial of blood, watching as the two-headed troll's blood seemed to crawl against the glass, trying to escape.
"Such vitality. If I refine you into pureblood, you'd practically soar," Richard mused.
The two-headed troll species has a strong reproductive ability, creating hybrid trolls with many creatures. These hybrids, when mating with pureblood trolls, produce two-headed trolls identical to their pureblood counterparts, with comparable regenerative abilities. As a result, most two-headed troll bloodlines on the market contain impurities from other species.
But this wasn't an issue for Richard.
Returning to the Black Tower with the bloodline, Richard prepared the tools for blood alchemy.
Unlike the first blood alchemy, the second wasn't as simple, requiring more than just an alchemy circle and bloodline. He needed a container large enough to fit himself and alchemical potions to aid the process.
The container was easy to solve; Jolord's tools for creating synthetic beasts included something similar.
However, when Richard and Chaxes arrived at Jolord's warehouse, he was taken aback by what he saw.
"Isn't this a coffin?" Richard couldn't help but comment.
In front of him was a dark crystal coffin, its walls engraved with runes, resembling a container for sealing some monster.
"You asked for the best incubation chamber," Chaxes said, stifling a laugh, "and this is the best one the teacher has. Using it for blood alchemy is overkill."
Richard shook his head, resigning himself to carry the crystal coffin back to his room.
Practical as ever, Richard cared little for appearances, prioritizing effectiveness.
Back in his room, Richard began drawing the alchemy circle on his body. The second blood alchemy circle was complex, taking him two attempts and half an afternoon to complete.
With the circle ready, Richard grabbed the two-headed troll's blood.
[Material: Two-headed Troll Blood]
[Extractable Substance: Pureblood Two-headed Troll Blood]
[Extraction Cost: 150 Magic Power]
[Proceed with Extraction?]
"Yes."
Upon confirming, the blood vanished from the vial, and a portion of his magic power was consumed. Moments later, a vibrant, life-filled mass of blood appeared in his hand.
After securing the blood, Richard filled the crystal coffin with an alchemical solvent, a pale green liquid with a jelly-like consistency.
During the blood alchemy process, this liquid would provide nutrients and vitality to his body. After filling the coffin, Richard placed twenty magic stones on its sides.
With everything in place, Richard submerged himself in the liquid, using magic to guide the two-headed troll's blood to his heart. He sealed the coffin, channeling magic into the alchemy circle to begin bloodline integration.
Instantly, a clear heartbeat resonated in Richard's ears as lava-like blood pumped from his heart, coursing through his body. Under its influence, every muscle fiber trembled.
Tear, heal, tear, heal...
An indescribable soreness swept through him. If pain were ranked from one to ten, with ten being the most intense, this felt like Π—endless and uncomfortable without being excruciating.
As time passed, the soreness gradually subsided, indicating his body was adapting to the troll bloodline.
Richard eventually lost consciousness.
Had someone opened the crystal coffin, they would have seen the pale green liquid turning transparent and Richard's body visibly growing more robust.
Richard's constitution increased steadily during this time.
Twenty-four, twenty-five... twenty-eight, twenty-nine...
Eventually, Richard awoke from his deep slumber.
Boom.
Richard opened the coffin lid, climbing out. The once pale green liquid was now clear, and the magic stones lining the coffin were depleted.
"How long was I out?"
Richard shook his head, carefully washing off the alchemical residue in the bathroom before changing clothes.
From past experience, Richard knew his constitution had improved significantly.
Seeing how snug his clothes fit over his muscles, Richard scratched his head.
"A bit tight."
Finding Chaxes, Richard learned he had been in blood alchemy for a full month.
"Your formula's impressive, junior," Chaxes said, patting Richard's muscular shoulders. "To see such strength after a second alchemy attempt is remarkable."
Initially, Chaxes had suggested Richard switch to Jolord's school formula, but now it seemed Richard's own concoction was more effective.
"Not bad. This formula mainly boosts strength and regeneration."
Chaxes handed Richard a crystal ball to test his constitution. To his amazement, Richard's constitution had increased from twenty-three to twenty-nine point nine, just shy of triggering the feedback effect.
"It's just a bit short. Triggering the feedback effect would save me a lot of meditation time," Richard lamented, eyeing the numbers.
"Don't get your hopes up, junior," Chaxes chuckled, retrieving the crystal ball. "That little bit may seem small, but breaking through is like crossing a chasm. Many masters who study constitution create secret potions and brave battlefields just to breach that threshold.
Though slow, our meditation method has no bottlenecks before becoming a wizard."
"True," Richard sighed. If constitution improvement were faster than meditation, bloodline wizards would dominate over energy-controlling enchanters.
"By the way, I need another favor," Richard said, stopping Chaxes from returning the crystal ball, wearing an apologetic smile.
Chaxes eyed Richard skeptically, sensing something amiss.
"What do you need?"
"Uh... I want to use your synthetic beast to help me adapt to my new body."
