Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Heart of Annihilation
Spring turned to autumn, and in the blink of an eye, eight years passed. During this time, Richard had been designing his new version of the water-fire annihilation spell, even naming it "Heart of Annihilation."
However, creating a new spell was no easy task.
In the laboratory, Richard stared at the rune array on the workbench, lost in thought.
"Sigh, another failure."
Although he was prepared for setbacks, the accumulation of failures was gradually wearing down his mental defenses.
He even began to doubt whether his approach was correct, questioning whether these two runes were as compatible as he had initially thought. Perhaps designing a new spell was the wrong path altogether.
"Caw caw! Richard, someone is looking for you."
Ulysses's voice suddenly broke the silence, and Richard glanced toward the window, spotting a familiar owl beside Ulysses.
As the owl entered the laboratory, it spoke in human language.
"Richard, come to Anna's place."
"Teacher's voice," Richard mused, suddenly recalling that this year was likely the year of the society gathering.
After tidying up the lab, Richard donned his wizard robe and headed to his senior sister Anna's wizard tower.
Upon arrival, he coincidentally bumped into Chax.
"Senior brother."
Richard greeted Chax with a nod. Over the decades, Chax had become even rounder, and the shine on his bald head had grown more pronounced.
"Long time no see, junior," Chax replied cheerfully.
The two entered the wizard tower together, where Anna and Jolord were already waiting in the reception hall.
Once they were seated, Jolord got straight to the point.
"This year is the society gathering year. Anna, Chax, how are your projects coming along?"
Anna shook her head, "Teacher, a few years ago, I joined the Golden Gear Society through a friend's introduction."
"Golden Gear Society?" Jolord frowned but then sighed. "Well, you have a talent for alchemical machinery. Joining Golden Gear makes sense."
The Golden Gear Society is a society of alchemy wizards who focus on alchemical machinery. Anna's talent in this area made her membership logical.
However, what irked Jolord was that his research was in synthetic beasts, which naturally clashed with those who worked with machinery, and now his student had joined the other side.
Anna awkwardly lowered her head, aware of her teacher's strained relations with some wizards in alchemical machinery.
Jolord turned his gaze to Chax.
"And you, Chax?"
"Me?" Chax also shook his head. "My battle beast isn't ready yet. I'll have to wait for the next society gathering to showcase it."
"Alright then," Jolord sighed, "I'll introduce Richard to the society this time."
...
The headquarters of the Golden Dawn Society was located on the twelfth residential layer, resembling an alchemical workshop with large pipes and towering chimneys that epitomized the alchemical machinery style Jolord disliked.
At the entrance, Richard greeted several familiar wizards.
"Carlos, long time no see."
"Michel, you've changed bodies again. What's the new species?"
"Zakariya, it's been a hundred years since we met. Looks like you fared well in planar war."
These wizards responded to Jolord with equal familiarity, indicating his good standing within the Golden Dawn Society.
Upon entering the building, Richard was immediately struck by the hall, reminiscent of a flesh-and-blood lair.
"Teacher, this..." Richard frowned. The hall's walls and floors appeared fleshy, with columns resembling bones, and blood vessels visible in the decor.
In any other setting, Richard would have already begun casting spells.
"Merlin's aesthetic is like that; you'll get used to it," Jolord replied nonchalantly.
As more wizards filled the hall, some of Jolord's old friends gathered around him, including the giant Gerald whom Richard had met before.
"Jolord, is this the student?" asked a two-headed wizard.
"Doesn't look like he's taking your synthetic beast path," another wizard chimed in.
Jolord sighed, "My student on that path hasn't finished his work yet. It'll have to wait until next time."
The wizards nodded and turned their attention to a newly arrived wizard, smiling.
"Merlin, have you completed your magical equipment? Jolord's student has."
The queried wizard wore a robe and looked like an ordinary human, but his face contorted with flesh when questioned.
"You lot!"
Merlin snorted, his face returning to normal.
He approached Richard, scrutinizing him with an almost evaluative gaze.
"Kid, let me see your magical equipment."
Richard frowned, then heard Jolord's voice in his ear.
"Give it to him. Merlin is the society's vice-chairman; checking works is part of his duty."
Richard retrieved an Annihilation Grenade from his pocket and handed it to Merlin. After inspecting it, Merlin grumbled.
"It's not that complex."
Jolord walked over to Richard, "Merlin, are you questioning the great wizard's judgment?"
Merlin's expression froze, and he reluctantly returned the Annihilation Grenade to Richard, handing him an emblem.
"This is the society's emblem. You're one of us now."
After Merlin left, Jolord began explaining the society's structure to Richard.
"Our society is loosely organized, with just three tiers: chairman, vice-chairman, and members. Merlin and Terras are vice-chairmen, and the chairman is the great wizard, Heart of Immortality."
"The chairman is a great wizard!?" Richard exclaimed.
"No need to be surprised. The society's chairman and vice-chairmen aren't the first generation. The Golden Dawn Society has been around since the Pioneer Era. Having a great wizard as chairman is normal," Jolord explained.
"The chairman and vice-chairmen handle gatherings, member evaluations, and dismissals. To expel a member, both vice-chairmen must agree, and the chairman must approve. So don't worry about Merlin."
Richard nodded. Although Merlin's attitude wasn't friendly, Richard wasn't one to hold grudges over minor slights.
As long as it didn't involve interests, a poor attitude was tolerable.
As the gathering progressed, the hall filled with wizards.
They exchanged information on recent developments and traded materials.
"Tier-three active flesh, nice stuff," a wizard remarked, inspecting Richard's materials. "How much do you have, and what do you want for it?"
Jolord patted Richard's shoulder and then moved away.
The gathering was also an academic salon, and Richard had questions to ask. Jolord introduced him to an alchemy wizard with expertise in water-fire annihilation spells.
"I heard you have some insights into water-fire annihilation spells. I'd like to consult you on a few things," Richard said politely.
The wizard frowned, mechanical whirring emanating from within.
"My insights aren't cheap. How much tier-three active flesh do you have?"
"Forty kilograms."
"Hiss, impressive," the wizard said, surprised. "Ask away. That's enough."
Although tier-three active flesh was priced at ten magic stones per gram, it was difficult to cultivate, and few wizards were willing to sell it. Only the Wizard Guild, wanting a complete range of products, periodically released batches to the market.
"Thank you, master. I have three questions. First, regarding the integration of second-circle rune arrays with rare runes..."
...
After a round of questioning, Richard exchanged thirty kilograms of active flesh for answers to three questions.
"The price of knowledge is steep," Richard lamented.
Thirty kilograms of active flesh equated to 300,000 magic stones or 300 magic essences. A first-circle wizard's net profit from a planar war was only 700-800 magic essences, making these three questions worth nearly half a planar war's earnings.
Fortunately, it was worth it.
The answers to these questions were ingenious. Without them, Richard might have taken a century or two to discover them himself. Moreover, they directly impacted his spell's progress. With the questions resolved, his spell design path became clear.
The gathering lasted a month, but most wizards left after obtaining what they needed.
Returning from the gathering, Richard immersed himself in the laboratory to work on his spell design.
Jolord didn't disturb him, understanding the exhilaration of unraveling a long-standing problem.
Three months later, Richard gazed at the rune array before him, smiling with satisfaction.
"Caw caw, did you succeed?"
Ulysses perched on Richard's shoulder, having closely followed Richard's spell design over the years. As a former world lord, Ulysses was curious about what Richard could create using its abilities.
It considered itself to have mastered its bloodline talent to the highest level. Otherwise, with so many Annihilation Ravens, it wouldn't have become the Lord of Ravens.
"Want to see the results?" Richard grinned at Ulysses, then flew out the window, transforming into a stream of light and arriving in a desert.
As a wizard's residence, each residential layer had a testing ground. Richard's layer had this desert.
Richard manipulated his mental strength to form runes, constructing a dense rune array.
With the spell prepared, a black fireball the size of a human head appeared in Richard's hand.
"Heh heh, let's see your power."
Richard chuckled, launching the fireball to detonate a kilometer away.
Buzz—
A strange buzzing reached Richard's ears.
In an instant, the black sphere, initially the size of a human head, expanded to human size before rapidly vanishing.
No light, no explosion, as calm as a springtime pond.
Richard approached the spell's impact site, finding the area consumed by the spell gone. At the edge, sand had fused into glass, leaving a hemispherical depression.
"Ulysses, what do you think of this spell?" Richard asked Ulysses.
The spell was so calm that he couldn't discern its true power.
"...Caw, to the former me, it's nothing. But for your current strength..." Ulysses paused, then said slowly:
"You're a real monster."
