Witcher's Legacy - Arcane Reborn

Chapter 20: Chapter 19: Into the Abyss

Aric awoke with a sharp gasp, his lungs burning as if he'd been underwater for hours. His body ached, and his head pounded with a relentless thrum that felt oddly familiar—like the pulsing energy of the Arcane.

Above him stretched an endless void, the faint glow of the surface barely visible. Around him, the air was thick with a strange, oppressive heat, and the ground was unlike anything he had ever felt. It was neither stone nor earth but something alive, pulsing faintly beneath his fingertips.

"Lireal!" he called out, his voice echoing unnaturally.

A groan answered him from a few feet away. Lireal sat up slowly, brushing off what looked like ash clinging to her armor. Her expression was a mix of pain and anger as she took in their surroundings.

"Where… are we?" she muttered, her voice barely audible.

Aric stood, swaying slightly as his legs adjusted to the strange, spongy terrain. The landscape around them was surreal—endless black dunes stretched out in all directions, broken only by jagged, glowing fissures that emitted an eerie green light. Shadows moved unnaturally in the distance, twisting and contorting as if they had a will of their own.

"I think we're in the Abyss," Aric said, his voice trembling.

Lireal turned to him sharply. "The Abyss is a myth. A story to scare fools away from the Arcane. This… this can't be real."

Aric's sigils flickered faintly, a weak response to the overwhelming energy around them. He shook his head. "It's real, Lireal. The Veiled One sent us here. And if we don't figure out how to get out…"

He trailed off as a low growl echoed through the void. Both of them turned toward the sound, weapons drawn instinctively. A massive shadow loomed in the distance, its form indistinct but undeniably threatening.

"What now?" Lireal hissed, her eyes scanning the horizon.

Aric's mind raced. He felt the Arcane stir within him, but it was weak, barely a flicker compared to the roaring flame it had been before. Whatever power he had left would need to be conserved.

"Run," he said, grabbing Lireal's arm.

They sprinted across the uneven terrain, the ground beneath them shifting with every step. The shadow followed, moving unnaturally fast despite its massive size. Its growls grew louder, and the fissures around them began to erupt with bursts of green flame.

"This isn't working!" Lireal shouted.

Aric's mind was a whirlwind of fear and desperation. They couldn't outrun it forever, and fighting it seemed impossible in their current state. But then, through the chaos, he remembered the Veiled One's words: "Welcome to the true Abyss. Let us see if you can survive what lies below."

"Lireal," he said, his voice steady despite the panic coursing through him. "We're not supposed to run."

She shot him a look of disbelief. "What are you talking about?"

"We're supposed to face it," he said, stopping abruptly.

The shadow surged forward, its form becoming clearer as it closed the distance. It was a monstrous amalgamation of limbs and eyes, its body writhing as if it were made of the same living darkness that surrounded them.

Lireal hesitated, then stepped beside him, her sword raised. "If we die here, I'm blaming you."

Aric smirked despite himself, his sigils flaring slightly in response to his resolve. The creature lunged, and the two of them stood their ground.

The clash was chaos incarnate. Lireal's blade met the creature's claws in a shower of sparks, her movements precise and deadly. Aric channeled what little Arcane energy he had left, sending bursts of light toward the creature's many eyes, forcing it to recoil.

But it wasn't enough. For every wound they inflicted, the creature seemed to regenerate, its body reforming from the shadows around it. Aric's energy was dwindling fast, and Lireal's strikes were slowing.

As the beast raised a massive claw to strike, Aric felt a surge of desperation. He reached deep within himself, calling on the Arcane in a way he never had before. The sigils on his skin burned brightly, and for a moment, time seemed to freeze.

A voice echoed in his mind—not the Veiled One's, but something older, deeper. "You are not alone."

The light from his sigils exploded outward, engulfing the creature in a blinding wave. When the light faded, the shadow-beast was gone, leaving only the sound of Aric's labored breathing.

Lireal stared at him, her expression a mix of awe and concern. "What was that?"

Aric shook his head, his legs giving out beneath him. "I don't know. But I think… I think someone—or something—is helping us."

Before Lireal could respond, the ground beneath them began to tremble violently. The fissures around them widened, and a deafening roar filled the air.

"Aric!" Lireal shouted, grabbing his arm as the terrain started to crumble.

From the largest fissure, a massive figure began to emerge. It was unlike anything they had faced before—towering, with multiple glowing eyes and a crown of jagged horns. The Veiled One's voice echoed across the Abyss.

"Did you think the Abyss would grant you mercy, Chosen One? Your trial has only just begun."

The fissures widened further, spewing arcs of green fire as the towering figure clawed its way into existence. Its form was colossal—hulking limbs wreathed in writhing shadows and a face obscured save for its glowing, unblinking eyes. The air grew thick with its presence, and Aric's breath caught in his throat.

Lireal pulled him to his feet, her voice sharp. "Whatever plan you had before? It better include surviving that."

The creature bellowed, a sound so deep it seemed to reverberate in their very bones. The pulsing terrain beneath them cracked further, forcing them to scramble away as glowing rivers of molten energy surged toward their position.

Aric steadied himself, trying to focus. His sigils were dim, their energy drained from the last attack, and the voice that had spoken to him earlier was now silent.

"Stalling," he muttered, his voice trembling. "We need to stall it. There has to be another way out of this."

Lireal gave him a sharp look. "How do you propose we stall something the size of a mountain? With a song and dance?"

Before Aric could respond, the creature lurched forward, its massive claw slamming into the ground where they had been moments before. The force sent them tumbling, and the ground cracked further, sending chunks of the strange terrain falling into the endless void below.

"We'll figure it out!" Aric yelled, dodging another massive strike.

Lireal snarled, her blade flashing as she slashed at the creature's arm. Her strikes left glowing marks but seemed to do little else. "This isn't working!"

Aric's mind raced as he searched for an opening. The creature's movements were deliberate but slow, as though it relished the hunt. Its many eyes tracked their every move, gleaming with malevolent intelligence.

Think, Aric. The Arcane had always been his key to survival, but in this place, it was erratic, its power unpredictable. He had to rely on something else.

His gaze shifted to the fissures, the molten rivers glowing with the same eerie energy as the creature's form. A reckless idea began to form.

"Lireal!" he called out, his voice barely audible over the chaos. "Drive it toward the fissures!"

She hesitated for only a moment before nodding. "Hope you know what you're doing."

Together, they split up, weaving between the cracks in the terrain and forcing the creature to follow. It roared in frustration, swiping at them with its massive claws and sending chunks of the ground flying.

Aric skidded to a stop near one of the larger fissures, his sigils flaring faintly as he channeled what little energy he had left. He needed to time this perfectly.

"Now!" he shouted.

Lireal darted toward the creature, her blade flashing as she struck at its leg. The beast bellowed and turned its attention to her, lumbering forward—and right into the path of the fissure.

Aric raised his hands, focusing every ounce of his willpower on the glowing rift. The molten energy surged upward in response, erupting in a massive column of green fire that engulfed the creature.

The roar that followed was deafening. The beast thrashed violently, its shadowy form flickering as the energy tore through it.

But even as it writhed in agony, it did not fall. Instead, it turned its burning gaze toward Aric, its eyes glowing brighter with rage.

Lireal ran to his side, her expression grim. "It's still standing. What now?"

Aric stared at the creature, his body trembling with exhaustion. He didn't have an answer.

The ground beneath them rumbled again, and the fissures began to spread, cutting off their escape routes one by one.

"Aric," Lireal said, her voice uncharacteristically soft. "I don't think we're getting out of this one."

Before he could respond, the voice from before echoed in his mind again—stronger this time, and filled with urgency.

"Release your fear, Aric. Accept the Arcane's true power… or be consumed."

His vision blurred, and for a moment, he felt as though he were standing outside of himself. The sigils on his skin began to glow brighter, pulsing in time with the rhythm of the Abyss itself.

"Aric!" Lireal shouted, her voice distant.

The towering creature lunged, its massive claw descending toward them with impossible speed.

Aric raised his hands instinctively, and the world around him erupted in a blinding flash of light.
