Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Being the Villain Seems Easier
Chapter 13: Being the Villain Seems Easier
If he life were a novel, Takakai swore that he would find the author, pin him to the ground, and slap him a few times for sure.
Damn it, first, a strange, shapeless monster appeared in the hallway and quickly killed three random characters in an instant. Then, there was an attack that chased them down as if wanting to take their lives.
Now, there's a "dead body staring" scene. Please, have mercy on my fragile heart!
What if I die from fear? What will the readers do then? Will they just change the main character and keep reading? Let me tell you, changing the main character is an absolute mood killer, you shouldn't do it. This is hard-earned experience from someone who has failed miserably before. Got it?
(t/n: not Jojo)
The complaints in his mind passed by in the blink of an eye.
Takakai's face remained expressionless, no ripples on it whatsoever.
He knew the man behind the woman's corpse was dead, knew he too was a corpse. Or rather, this thing at least had some features of a dead body, like no breath, or wounds on its body severe enough to be fatal for a human.
But he also knew that this thing was staring at him.
The only intact eye of the man was wide open, continuously fixed on Takakai's face.
Takakai subtly shifted his body.
Behind the woman's corpse, the head of the male corpse silently turned as well, keeping its gaze fixed on him.
This thing was hiding in a place almost completely engulfed in darkness.
If Takakai hadn't noticed the issue and observed carefully, he would have never noticed its existence behind the female corpse. But even after realizing it, he didn't dare openly point out its presence.
After being attacked by the terrifying power of those Eldritch-like beings, Takakai understood deeply that the things in this building were not something that ordinary humans could deal with.
At the moment, this corpse was just lying still, but if it were to stand up, the whole group of six might be Hexakilled in an instant.
"Let's go, there's nothing more to see here, just a corpse. Let's head to Room 210, maybe there will be some clues there."
He placed the bedsheet down to cover the corpse under the bed, stood up, and spoke while turning to Kaguya, mouthing the word "SOS."
Understanding the signal, Kaguya glanced at the seemingly normal double bed, then looked down at the woman with blonde hair, whom she was holding by the mouth, her cheeks now red from the pressure. After thinking for a moment, she coldly said:
"I'll release you now, but as long as you don't scream loudly and don't interfere with what we're doing, I have no interest in doing anything to you."
After saying this, Kaguya loosened her grip on the woman's mouth.
"You... what do you want to do? My house has no money, I'm very poor, don't kidnap me..."
The "Ice Queen's" threatening skills were clearly over 80. The woman who had just been freed was so scared that tears were streaming down her face, but she didn't dare cry loudly, only weakly begging in a small voice, almost kneeling on the ground.
"Who has the time to kidnap you? Open your eyes and see clearly, we're also stuck here just like you. Let me make it clear, the reason we're not abandoning you is not because of any goodwill. If you can't show any value, then the corpse from earlier is your next fate."
On the other side, Maki was talking while stuffing the documents she had found from the bookshelf—unclear whether they would lead to any useful clues—into her backpack. After that, she opened the living room door and was ready to step out.
"You... what do you really want to do? I don't have any grudges with you..."
Sun Dajun, curled up against the wall, suddenly stood up, protecting the sobbing blonde woman. Finally, unable to bear it any longer, he angrily spoke.
This is such a hassle.
Takakai felt the annoyance deep in his heart.
Now, he suddenly realized that the reason Old Guo chose to leave alone was actually to avoid carrying this pile of chaos.
Those who were entering the Sacrifice Game – Horror Story Rules for the first time had no idea how dangerous and terrifying this place was, still trying to solve problems using everyday rules and concepts, not understanding that one wrong step could lead to immediate annihilation.
Takakai was not a person who adhered to altruistic principles. Honestly speaking, he would have preferred to ignore these people and let them find their own way to death, just as he had done the last time.
But the problem was that in this apartment building, those who died would never rest in peace. They would transform into monsters that defied all logic, relentlessly pursuing the traces of the living and causing endless trouble for the actions to come.
Ignoring them wouldn't work, but caring about them wasn't a solution either. The seven-day game had just begun less than an hour ago, and Takakai had already felt the immense malice of this map from every angle.
"Mr. Green, do you have a knife?"
Then, Takakai heard the cold voice of Shinomiya Kaguya.
"I do."
Immediately after, Green drew a 15 cm long dagger from his belt, looking as though it had been meticulously sharpened. Even in the dim room, the blade gleamed coldly, appearing extremely sharp.
"Keep him quiet and take him outside. If he dares to shout, cut his tongue off."
Kaguya gave the cold order without even sparing a glance at Sun Dajun, merely giving Takakai a subtle signal before walking away.
Takakai quickly followed Kaguya. After thinking for a moment, he gently smiled at the woman with blonde hair, huddled in a corner, and asked:
"Do you want to walk out on your own, or should I personally invite you?"
He thought his tone still sounded normal.
However, the woman immediately burst into tears, covered her mouth with her hand, and trembled as she stepped out, as if threatened by a murderer.
As for Sun Dajun, though he wanted to resist bravely, when Green thrust the knife into the wall just next to his head, less than a centimeter from his ear, he was so frightened he could barely stand it. He had no choice but to sulk, obediently following along.
"This is how it should be."
Standing in the hallway, Kaguya coldly observed Sun Dajun and the trembling woman with blonde hair, her posture as proud as that of a queen.
"Whether you accept it or not, if you don't obey from here on out, I'll give you the appropriate punishment."
"In a dire situation, the light of humanity has never been necessary for survival. On the contrary, only enough primal instincts can ensure safety."
"If you can't obediently follow orders, I can only say you are left with the most basic value of exploitation, not even as useful as a dog. If you're sensible, depending on the situation, I might consider offering you a bit of favor."
"Mr. Green, please teach these two disobedient dogs properly. Don't let them cause any trouble."
Kaguya gave her cold command, then turned away, no longer looking at the two of them.
"My name is Sun Dajun, I'm not a dog."
The man felt insulted and growled angrily.
"I... my name is Maeda Miwa..."
Though the woman was timid, after Kaguya spoke to her like that, she also felt uncomfortable. When Sun Dajun protested, she followed suit and spoke up.
But then, when Green, with a sinister smile and a knife in hand, stepped in front of them and coldly said, "What the hell do your names have to do with me?", both of them – who were just ordinary people, untrained – immediately chose to remain silent.
This process took about one or two minutes, and in the end, both of them reluctantly complied.
This was really too much of a hassle.
Takakai shook his head slightly, feeling disheartened by the current chaotic situation.
They needed to make these two people witness the truth with their own eyes, so they could understand how serious the situation was. If not, even though Takakai could force them into submission now, sooner or later these two fools would do something stupid, like the typical supporting characters in a horror movie, causing all sorts of trouble.
And to solve the rules and puzzles here, they couldn't always stick close to them. Even though Green could watch over them, having one person supervise two idiots would inevitably lead to some oversights.
Adding to the strange mechanics of this place, if these two died and turned into something powerful that couldn't be dealt with, then came after them, they'd have to use the wall clock to reverse time. At that point, the pressure would only increase.
However, at least these two could still be useful for one thing: candidates to activate the wall clock.
Takakai, who had directly used a wall clock, still felt the eyes of the clock faces, made from human heads, watching him. After coming into contact with these things, it seemed as though they established a strange connection with him. This abnormal phenomenon was something to be wary of.
Therefore, he thought that if he needed to use the power of the clocks later, key figures in the investigation like Shinomiya Kaguya and Shijo Maki should absolutely not be the ones to carry it out.
At first, he thought it would be enough to have Green do it. But now, looking back, having Sun Dajun or Maeda Miwa do it wouldn't be so bad. He was confident that once they touched the clock, they'd immediately understand the current situation.
This might seem a bit cruel, no, actually, it wasn't cruel at all. Takakai had been followed by that strange entity because he had to activate the clock, and frankly speaking, he had saved these people's lives. Asking them to return a bit of that favor wasn't wrong.
Takakai was a little surprised to realize how easily he had changed his mindset.
Playing the role of the villain alongside Kaguya, even considering some not-so-nice measures, didn't make him feel any moral conflict.
Maybe it was because they weren't beautiful women. After all, I do place importance on looks.
As he thought this, Takakai picked up a wooden stick from the hallway and placed it in front of the closed door of room 205.
Takakai, Kaguya, and Maki exchanged glances, then Takakai pointed toward room 208. Kaguya and Maki thought for a moment, then gestured for Green to lead the two others, warning them not to make a sound.
The idea of going to room 210 was, of course, a lie. After Old Guo had emphasized not going to room 210, Takakai wasn't foolish enough to risk his life to test whether that warning was real or fake.
So, he decided to hide in room 208—the one they had previously explored with no apparent danger... at least "Mr. Refrigerator" during their last investigation didn't seem to have any intention of "interacting" with them.
He wanted to observe the activity in the hallway and check if "Mr. Under the Bed" was going to make any attempts to chase them. This was a necessary experiment.
Takakai had decided to adopt the habit of horror game players, giving nicknames to various monsters, like "Mr. Chainsaw," "Mr. Scissors," "Mr. Fat." This helped alleviate some of his mental pressure.
Green, who was swaggering as the lackey, thought he had found a solid support. He led Sun Dajun and Maeda Miwa, who were disheartened and looking down, into the living room.
According to Takakai's instructions, these two were arranged in the kitchen and told to move the refrigerator, place the door facing the wall, and make it tight. Then, they had to sit with their backs against the fridge, while Green stood guard at the kitchen door.
"Watch over those two. If anything tries to crawl out of the fridge, immediately lead them to the living room."
When Takakai said this to Green, he saw the man's face go pale immediately. Clearly, all of his courage came from the presence of Takakai, Kaguya, and Maki. Therefore, Takakai had to appear more firm. Despite his fear, Green reluctantly led the two into the kitchen.
The one with the sharpest hearing, Kaguya, stayed in the hallway to supervise and confirm the results of this experiment. She decided that if she noticed anything unusual, she would immediately leave the hallway and enter the living room, absolutely not calling Takakai and Maki as she had last time, which had nearly gotten all three of them killed.
"Ha... I hope everything goes well this time."
Shijo Maki, standing at the door separating the living room from the hallway, sighed and whispered tiredly.
She didn't like playing the villain. She had never thought about doing anything to those poor souls—who, like her, were trapped in this place.
Unlike Shinomiya Kaguya, who was educated by a cold, wealthy family, or Takakai, who didn't have overly high moral standards, Shijo Maki had always been a kind-hearted girl.
But, she was smart enough to understand that when the situation couldn't be explained clearly and the other side had become hostile, maintaining a certain level of pressure was necessary to ensure temporary stability. That was why she had to pretend to be cold.
Furthermore, the man named Green only obeyed them because he thought they were "veteran players."
Once this façade was peeled away, this murderous man would no longer be as easy to deal with as he seemed now.
This was really troublesome...
This so-called "game," why did it have to torture people who were living peaceful lives like them?
Her sighs received no response.
...
In the hallway, Kaguya—who was frowning and carefully listening to the sounds outside—finally heard the noise she both wanted and didn't want to hear.
"Crack!"
The small wooden stick that had been placed in front of the door to room 205 fell down.
