Chapter 72: Shizu II
Rimuru walked up the hill where Shizu sat, her mask placed beside her. The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow over the village below. He approached slowly, not wanting to startle her.
"Hey," Rimuru called gently.
Shizu turned her head, smiling faintly. "Oh, it's you, Rimuru. I was just admiring the view. Your village is truly beautiful."
"Thanks," Rimuru replied, sitting down next to her. For a moment, they both gazed silently at the scenery. Then Rimuru broke the silence. "Shizu... are you an Otherworlder?"
Shizu's body stiffened slightly, her hands clenching her lap. "Yes, I am. I was summoned to this world a long time ago. But... it feels like a lifetime has passed since then."
Rimuru looked at her, his expression soft but curious. "I see. Same here. I died in my world and woke up here. I'm from a country called Japan."
Shizu's eyes widened. "Japan? That's my homeland too. But... you said you died? How did you end up here?"
Rimuru scratched his head awkwardly. "I don't know. What about you? Were you from modern Japan?"
Shizu shook her head. "No, it was a much earlier time. Japan was at war when I was taken. It was... chaotic." Her voice trailed off, sadness laced in her tone.
Rimuru tilted his head. "Wait, if you're from Japan, then you must know about..." He paused and asked Great Sage, "Hey, can you project some images of Japan from my memory? Let's show her what she's missed."
Great Sage complied immediately, projecting vivid images of modern-day Japan in front of them: bustling cityscapes, skyscrapers, bullet trains, and vibrant festivals.
Shizu's eyes widened in awe. "This… this is Japan? It's so advanced. The buildings, the technology... everything is so vibrant." She reached out as though to touch the images. "It's hard to believe this is the same country I once knew."
Rimuru chuckled. "Yeah, it's changed a lot. I guess I kind of miss it, even though I'm pretty happy here now."
The conversation grew quiet for a moment before Rimuru turned to Shizu, his expression serious. "Shizu... I need to tell you something important."
Shizu glanced at him, sensing the shift in his tone. "What is it?"
Rimuru took a deep breath. "You don't have much time left. The spirit inside you—Ifrit—is trying to take over. If nothing is done, you're going to die soon."
Shizu's eyes widened in shock, but she quickly composed herself, her gaze dropping to the ground. "I see... So my time is finally running out. I always knew this day would come."
"You knew?" Rimuru asked, surprised.
Shizu nodded. "Yes. I've lived with Ifrit for so long, and it's always been a struggle to keep control. I've accepted that my end was inevitable." She smiled faintly. "I don't mind dying. I'm tired, Rimuru. I just want to rest in peace."
Rimuru clenched his fists. "No, I'm not letting you die, Shizu. I know it's selfish of me, but I can't just stand by knowing there's a way to help you."
Shizu looked at him, surprised. "A way to help me?"
Rimuru nodded.
I can absorb you into my subspace, separate you from Ifrit, and keep you safe until we find a replacement spirit to stabilize you."
Shizu's lips parted, her emotions conflicted. "You'd do that for me?
"Of course," Rimuru said firmly. "Besides..." He hesitated, a faint blush appearing on his face. "I, uh, recently found out through some fortune-telling that you're one of my destined ones."
Shizu blinked in confusion, then chuckled softly. "Destined ones, huh? One of them? Just how many are there?"
Rimuru turned his head to the side, embarrassed. "A couple more... I think."
Shizu smiled warmly, a rare expression of amusement crossing her face. "You're a funny one, Rimuru." Her gaze softened. "Alright. I'll trust you. But before you absorb me, there's something I need to ask of you."
Rimuru leaned forward. "What is it?"
"There are children... children who are just like me, summoned from another world and burdened with spirits. They're my students, and they're still suffering. Please... save them."
Rimuru placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "No, Shizu. You're going to save them yourself. I won't let you die. We'll get through this together."
Shizu's eyes filled with emotion. After a moment of silence, she nodded. "Alright. I'll do as you say. But... can I at least say goodbye to the adventurers first?"
Rimuru smiled. "Of course."
The two of them returned to the village, where Shizu met with Gido, Gavel, and Ellen. When she explained what was about to happen, the adventurers were visibly distraught but ultimately understood her decision.
"Shizu, we'll miss you," Ellen said, tears in her eyes. "You've done so much for us. Thank you."
Gido and Gaval nodded in agreement, their expressions somber.
Shizu smiled gently. "Thank you all for everything. Don't worry—I'll be fine. Rimuru will take care of me."
With the farewells done, Shizu turned to Rimuru, her resolve firm. "I'm ready, Rimuru. Let's do this."
Rimuru nodded, determination burning in his eyes. "Alright. Trust me, Shizu. I won't let you down."
Rimuru gently led Shizu to his house, the atmosphere heavy with unspoken tension. Shizu looked calm, but her hands trembled slightly as she clutched her mask. Rimuru noticed and gave her a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry, Shizu," he said softly. "I'll handle this. You're in good hands."
Shizu nodded, her expression resolute. "I trust you, Rimuru. Do what you must."
Once inside, Rimuru asked her to sit down comfortably on the futon he had set up earlier. He then addressed Great Sage in his mind.
"Great Sage, let's begin the process. Activate Predator and absorb Shizu, but be careful when extracting Ifrit. He's not going to give up without a fight."
"Understood, Master," Great Sage responded. "Preparing Predator skill. Beginning absorption of target."
A faint glow surrounded Rimuru as the Predator skill activated. Shizu closed her eyes, her body radiating a soft warmth.
"Are you ready?" Rimuru asked her one last time.
Shizu opened her eyes briefly and gave him a small, sad smile. "Yes. I'm ready. Thank you, Rimuru."
The glow intensified as Predator enveloped Shizu's body gradually dissolved into light particles, absorbed into Rimuru's subspace. Inside the subspace, Great Sage immediately began separating Ifrit, the superior fire spirit, from Shizu's soul.
"Master, the separation process has begun. Ifrit is resisting, as expected. I will now suppress him."
Rimuru felt a surge of energy within him as Ifrit tried to fight back. Flames erupted momentarily within his subspace, but Great Sage acted swiftly, subduing the fire spirit with her unparalleled processing power.
"Ifrit has been successfully isolated," Great Sage reported. "I will now begin analyzing Ifrit to extract skills and abilities that may be useful to you."
Rimuru nodded, his mind focused. "Good. Make sure Shizu is stable in the subspace. We don't want her to suffer."
"Affirmative. Shizu is stable, and her vitals are under control. Time within your subspace flows differently, so she will not experience any deterioration while stored."
Rimuru let out a small sigh of relief. "What about Ifrit? What can we get from him?"
"Analyzing Ifrit's abilities. Initial analysis indicates access to the following skills: 'Flame Control,' 'Hellfire,' 'Infernal Burst,' and 'Flame Manipulation.' Additional abilities related to superior fire resistance and energy generation are also being processed. These skills can be integrated into your arsenal as part of the Predator skill's effect."
Rimuru's eyes gleamed with excitement. "Nice! That'll definitely come in handy. Let me know when the analysis is complete."
"Understood, Master. Estimated time for full analysis: three hours."
Rimuru leaned back in his chair, relieved that the most difficult part was over. "Hang in there, Shizu," he murmured to himself. "I'll find a way to fix this. I promise."
With Shizu safely contained in his subspace and Ifrit neutralized, Rimuru couldn't help but feel a surge of determination. His journey had just taken a new turn, and he was ready to do whatever it took to fulfill his promise to her.
