Chapter 21: Chapter 20: The Tower of Chains

The Tower of Chains stood on the edge of the kingdom, a fortress of stone and iron built to contain the most dangerous of prisoners. For Kael, it would be his new home, his prison, and perhaps his tomb. When they reached the tower, the guards led him through the heavy iron gates and up the winding staircase to the highest cell. The chains around his wrists clinked with every step,As the guards led Kael up the winding staircase, the weight of his fate settled over him like a suffocating blanket. The chains around his wrists clanked with every step, and the cold stone walls of the Tower of Chains seemed to close in on him with every passing second. He had heard the stories about this place—about the souls trapped here, forgotten by the world. A prison for those too dangerous to be allowed to roam free, but too valuable to be executed outright. It was fitting, Kael thought bitterly, that he would end up here. They reached the top of the tower, and one of the guards unlocked the heavy iron door to his cell. The door creaked open, revealing a small, bare room with only a narrow window that overlooked the desolate wasteland beyond. There was no bed, no furniture, just a cold, hard floor and the oppressive silence of isolation."This is where you'll stay," the guard said, his voice flat and emotionless. "For the rest of your days."Kael didn't respond. He stepped into the cell, the weight of the chains making his steps heavy and deliberate. The guard slammed the door shut behind him, the echo of the iron reverberating through the chamber. Kael stood in the center of the cell, staring at the walls that would be his new world. His wrists ached from the weight of the manacles, but it was nothing compared to the ache in his chest. The darkness inside him still churned, still whispered to him, urging him to break free, to take what he deserved. It was always there now, a constant presence that he couldn't shake.Kael closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm inside. He had chosen this. He had accepted his fate. But that didn't make it any easier to bear.Days passed in a blur. The isolation was maddening. There was no one to talk to, no way to measure time beyond the small sliver of light that crept through the window during the day. Kael spent most of his time sitting in the corner of the cell, trying to keep the darkness at bay. But it was always there, gnawing at the edges of his mind, threatening to take control. He had never felt so alone.
