Chapter 6: Dance of Shadows
The clearing erupted in chaos. The shadowy beasts charged with an unnatural speed, their forms blurring as they lunged at Ignis and Kai. Ignis reacted instantly, fire bursting to life in his hands. With a sweeping motion, he hurled a wave of flames at the nearest beast, incinerating it in an instant.
"Behind me, Kai!" Ignis roared, his voice cutting through the snarls of the remaining creatures.
Kai stumbled back, his grip on the package so tight it felt like it might fuse to his hands. His heart hammered in his chest as he watched Ignis move like a force of nature, flames arcing and twisting around him with precision. But for every beast he destroyed, another seemed to materialize from the shadows.
Amara stood at the edge of the clearing, watching with an air of detached amusement. Her fox-like eyes gleamed as she called out, "Oh, come now, Ignis. Surely you can do better than this?"
Ignis snarled, a ball of fire forming in his hand. "If you want a fight, Amara, stop hiding behind your pets and face me yourself!"
Amara's smile widened. "Now, where's the fun in that?"
As Ignis was momentarily distracted, one of the beasts broke past his flames and lunged straight for Kai. Time seemed to slow. The beast's glowing eyes locked onto him, its claws outstretched.
Panic surged through Kai, but as he raised his hand instinctively, the package pulsed. A burst of light erupted from his palm, slamming into the beast and sending it sprawling backward. The recoil left Kai gasping, his knees buckling under the strain.
Ignis shot a glance back, his eyes narrowing. "You're drawing from the fragment again. Control it, or it'll burn you alive!"
Kai barely heard him, his vision swimming. The raw energy he'd unleashed was still thrumming in his veins, wild and untamed. He staggered, trying to steady himself. "I don't even know how to control it!"
"Then stop using it!" Ignis barked, his flames flaring higher.
But it was easier said than done. The fragment felt alive, responding to his panic and fear like a living thing. As another beast charged toward him, Kai could feel the energy building again, desperate to be unleashed.
This time, he tried to focus. He clenched his teeth, his mind racing as he willed the energy to form something—anything. A spark danced in his palm, and then a thin arc of fire lashed out, striking the beast and stopping it in its tracks.
Kai stared at his hand, his chest heaving. "Did I just... do that?"
Ignis didn't respond, too busy fending off another wave of attackers. The fire surrounding him surged, brighter and hotter with every strike. He moved like a blur, each attack precise and devastating.
But even Ignis had his limits. The sheer number of beasts was overwhelming, and the strain was beginning to show. His movements slowed slightly, his flames flickering at the edges.
Amara seemed to notice. She tilted her head, her smile fading into something more calculating. "Interesting. Even a prince has his limits, it seems."
Ignis turned toward her, his expression fierce. "Is this all you've got, Amara? I expected more from the Kitsune Clan."
Amara raised an eyebrow, her tails flicking behind her. "Oh, Ignis. You should know better than to provoke me."
She raised her hand, and the shadows around her thickened, coalescing into a single massive form. It rose from the ground like a living nightmare, its glowing eyes burning brighter than the molten streams below.
Kai's heart sank. "That's... not good."
Ignis stepped back, his flames flickering dangerously low. He muttered under his breath, "We're outmatched."
Kai tightened his grip on the package. "So what do we do?"
Ignis glanced at him, his expression grim. "Survive."
The massive shadow beast lunged, its sheer size dwarfing the others. Ignis met it head-on, his flames roaring back to life in a desperate surge of power. The impact sent shockwaves through the clearing, forcing Kai to shield his face from the heat and light.
But even Ignis's fire wasn't enough. The shadow beast pressed forward, its claws tearing through the flames like they were nothing. Ignis faltered, the strain evident in his eyes.
Kai's chest tightened. He couldn't just stand there and watch. The fragment pulsed in his hands, its energy thrumming like a heartbeat. He looked down at it, the cracks in its surface glowing faintly.
"If I use this... will it help?" he muttered to himself.
Before he could second-guess, he closed his eyes and focused. The energy responded instantly, rushing through him in a wave of heat and light. He could feel it building, wild and chaotic, but this time he didn't fight it. He let it flow.
When he opened his eyes, the clearing was bathed in a blinding light. A wave of fire erupted from him, slamming into the shadow beast and forcing it back. The heat was intense, but somehow it didn't burn him.
Ignis turned, his golden eyes wide with surprise. "Kai... what did you do?"
Kai staggered, the energy fading as quickly as it had come. He fell to his knees, gasping for air. "I don't know. I just... did something."
The shadow beast roared, but it was weakened, its form flickering like a dying flame. Amara's smile faltered, her fox-like eyes narrowing. "Well. That's unexpected."
She raised her hand, and the remaining beasts dissolved into the shadows, retreating into the darkness. The massive shadow beast followed, its roar echoing as it vanished.
Amara stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "You've got more potential than I gave you credit for, human. Perhaps this game will be more interesting than I thought."
Ignis stepped between her and Kai, his flames flickering to life again. "This isn't over, Amara."
Her smile returned, sly and playful. "Oh, I know. But for now, consider this a truce. After all, I wouldn't want to ruin the fun too soon."
With a flick of her wrist, she disappeared, leaving only the faint scent of smoke and something sweet in the air.
Kai collapsed onto the ground, his body trembling from exhaustion. "Please tell me that's the last of them."
Ignis crouched beside him, his expression serious. "It won't be. You're more dangerous than I thought, Kai. And that means they'll keep coming."
Kai groaned, closing his eyes. "Great. Just what I needed to hear."
Ignis stood, his gaze scanning the clearing. "Rest while you can. We'll need to move again soon."
As Kai lay there, the weight of everything that had happened pressed down on him. The bond, the fragment, the fight—none of it made sense, but one thing was clear. His life would never be the same.
