Veilbound: The Hidden Pact

Chapter 44: Regrouping in the Shadows

The journey back to the safe house was tense and quiet. The city's faint hum was a stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped. Each of them carried their own thoughts—questions, doubts, and the weight of what was yet to come. Kai clutched the fragment tightly, its pulse faint but steady, a reminder of the immense power they were trying to unravel.

When they reached the hideout, Ignis pushed the door open cautiously, his golden eyes scanning for any sign of trouble. Once they were inside, he secured the door, his flames flickering faintly. Febe leaned against the wall, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. Selene lingered by the window, her gaze distant as if searching for unseen threats.

Kai dropped into a chair, his body still trembling from the strain of the node's destruction. The fragment pulsed weakly in his hands, its energy drained but stable. He exhaled slowly, trying to quiet his racing thoughts.

"That was close," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Too close," Febe said, her green eyes sharp as she pushed off the wall. "We need to talk about what happened back there."

Ignis nodded, crossing his arms. "The Ashen Order knew we were coming. That operative wasn't just waiting—they were prepared."

Selene turned from the window, her voice calm but firm. "Of course they were. After the first node, they've likely increased security around the others. It's only going to get harder from here."

Kai frowned, his grip tightening on the fragment. "Then we need to be smarter. We can't keep rushing in like this."

Febe raised an eyebrow, her smirk faint. "Finally, some common sense."

The group gathered around the table, the faint glow of an oil lamp casting long shadows across their faces. Selene unrolled a map of the city, marking the locations of the remaining nodes. Each one was deep in clan-controlled territory, and each came with its own set of challenges.

"The third node is here," Selene said, pointing to a location in the Kitsune Clan's territory. "It's hidden beneath an old temple. The Ashen Order has likely fortified it, but the Kitsune's illusions make it even more dangerous. It's a maze."

Ignis frowned, his flames flaring slightly. "The Kitsune Clan is unpredictable. If they're working with the Ashen Order, we're walking into another trap."

"They're not working with them," Febe said, her tone sharp. "The Kitsune thrive on secrecy and manipulation, but they hate outsiders interfering in their territory. If anything, they're probably being used without realizing it."

Kai studied the map, his brow furrowing. "What about the other two nodes?"

Selene pointed to the fourth node, located in the heart of the Serpent Clan's main stronghold. "This one is the most fortified. If we try to take it out now, we'll fail."

Febe nodded. "So we focus on the Kitsune node next. If we can disrupt their connection to the leyline, it might weaken the other nodes."

Ignis's golden eyes met Selene's glowing void-tinted gaze. "And you? Are you going to keep feeding us information, or are you actually going to fight?"

Selene smirked faintly. "I'm here, aren't I? Trust me, you'll need me for the next one. The Kitsune don't play fair."

---

As the group finalized their plan, Kai couldn't shake the tension lingering in the room. Selene's presence, while helpful, still felt like a risk. He glanced at her, his voice hesitant. "Why did you really leave the Ashen Order?"

Selene's smirk faded, her expression hardening. "I told you—because I saw what they were doing. They don't just want to control the leyline. They want to bend it, break it, and rebuild it in their image. Anyone who gets in their way is expendable."

Febe tilted her head, her green eyes narrowing. "And you were okay with that until now?"

Selene's gaze darkened. "I didn't have a choice. The Ashen Order isn't something you walk away from easily."

Kai frowned, the fragment humming softly in his hands. "So, what changed?"

Selene hesitated, her voice quieter. "I saw what they were willing to do. The lives they were willing to sacrifice. It wasn't about power—it was about control. I couldn't be part of it anymore."

Ignis watched her closely, his flames flickering faintly. "If you're lying—"

"I'm not," Selene interrupted, her tone sharp. "You don't have to trust me, but you need me. The Kitsune node isn't something you can handle on your own."

Febe glanced at Kai, her expression softening slightly. "What do you think, Kai?"

Kai hesitated, his gaze locking onto Selene's. The fragment pulsed faintly in his hands, its energy calm but watchful. "I think we don't have a choice. If she can help us, we need to take that chance."

Ignis sighed, his golden eyes narrowing. "Fine. But one wrong move, and you'll regret it."

---

As the group prepared for their next mission, the weight of their fight against the Ashen Order pressed heavily on them. The destruction of two nodes was a victory, but it was only a small step in a much larger battle. The leyline was still unstable, and the Ashen Order's retaliation was inevitable.

Kai stood by the window, staring out at the city. The fragment pulsed faintly in his hands, its energy a steady reminder of the responsibility he carried. Febe approached him, her voice soft.

"You did good back there," she said, leaning against the wall. "You're starting to get the hang of this."

Kai glanced at her, his expression uncertain. "It doesn't feel like it. Every time I use the fragment, it feels like I'm barely in control."

"That's because you're not," Febe said bluntly. "But you're learning. And that's what matters."

Kai sighed, the weight of the fragment pressing on him. "What if I can't control it? What if it's too much?"

Febe smirked faintly, her green eyes glinting. "Then you let us help you. That's what we're here for, Kai. You're not doing this alone."

---

As dawn broke over the city, the group gathered their supplies and prepared to leave. The path ahead was dangerous, but their resolve was stronger than ever. The fight for the leyline continued, and they wouldn't stop until the Ashen Order was defeated.
