Chapter 38: Regroup and Resolve
The trio arrived at a safe house on the fringes of Arcanova's industrial district, a small, run-down building hidden between a pair of towering smokestacks. It was one of Febe's known hideouts, a place she had used during her years navigating the shadows of the city. The air smelled of metal and soot, and the faint hum of distant machinery was a constant backdrop.
Inside, the space was spartan but functional—an old table, mismatched chairs, and a cot shoved into one corner. A few crates stacked against the walls held supplies: enchanted bandages, basic provisions, and a handful of weapons. Ignis lit a small flame in his palm, the flickering light casting long shadows across the room as the group settled in.
Kai dropped onto a chair, leaning forward with his head in his hands. The weight of the fragment and the battle in Hollow's Reach pressed heavily on him. Febe set her bag on the table, her green eyes scanning their surroundings with practiced precision, while Ignis paced by the door, his golden eyes sharp and restless.
"We need to figure out what's next," Febe said, breaking the silence. Her tone was steady, but there was an edge of urgency beneath it. "The Ashen Order won't sit idle after what we did. They'll retaliate, and we need to be ready."
Ignis stopped pacing, turning to face her. "The question is how. Destroying that orb will have set them back, but it won't stop their plans entirely. If anything, it'll make them more desperate."
Kai looked up, exhaustion clear on his face. "How do we even fight something like that? They've got magic, power, an army. We're... just three people."
"Three people who just destroyed one of their key assets," Febe countered, her smirk faint but resolute. "We've already proved we're more than a nuisance. Now we need to hit them where it hurts."
Ignis crossed his arms, his flames flickering faintly around his hands. "Their strength comes from their secrecy. If we can expose their operations, we'll force them into the open. That's when they'll be vulnerable."
Kai frowned, his grip tightening on the fragment. "Expose them how? The clans don't trust each other, let alone us."
Febe leaned against the table, her expression thoughtful. "We need proof. Something that shows the clans exactly how the Ashen Order's been manipulating them. If we can get our hands on their plans, their contracts, anything that ties them to the chaos in Arcanova, it'll force the clans to pay attention."
"And where do we find that?" Kai asked, his frustration evident.
Febe glanced at Ignis. "Their headquarters in Hollow's Reach was just one of their operations. They've got networks all over the city—safe houses, supply routes, informants. We start small, pick apart their web one piece at a time."
Ignis nodded. "It's risky, but it's our best option. If we can disrupt their supply lines and capture their informants, we'll find what we need."
---
They spent the next few hours strategizing, using a map of the city Febe had retrieved from her bag. She marked potential locations where the Ashen Order might operate—hidden warehouses, abandoned districts, and places where rogue activity was common.
"These spots," Febe said, tapping the map, "are where they're most likely to store supplies or meet with contacts. We hit these first."
Kai studied the map, his nerves fraying at the thought of diving back into danger. "And what if we're wrong?"
"Then we move to the next spot," Febe said simply. "This isn't about taking them down in one strike. It's about chipping away at their power."
Ignis stepped closer, his golden eyes fixed on Kai. "We'll need you to keep control of the fragment. Its power is unpredictable, but it gives us an edge. If you can harness it like you did in the chamber, it'll turn the tide in our favor."
Kai hesitated, his gaze dropping to the fragment in his hands. Its hum was quiet now, its light dim but steady. "I'll try," he said, his voice quiet. "But what if I lose control again?"
"You won't," Febe said firmly. "You're stronger than you think, Kai. You've already proved that."
Kai met her gaze, a flicker of determination breaking through his doubt. "Okay. I'll do my best."
---
After finalizing their plan, the trio took a moment to rest. Ignis sat by the door, his golden eyes scanning the dark streets outside. Febe leaned against the wall, her posture relaxed but alert. Kai lay on the cot, staring at the ceiling as the weight of their mission settled over him.
"You're quiet," Febe said, her voice breaking the silence.
Kai glanced at her, his expression tired but thoughtful. "Just... thinking."
"About what?" she asked, crossing her arms.
"Everything," Kai admitted. "The Ashen Order, the clans, this fragment... it's all so much bigger than me. I don't know if I'm ready for this."
Febe smirked faintly. "No one's ever ready for something like this. But you're here, and you're fighting. That's what matters."
Kai nodded slowly, her words sinking in. "Thanks."
"Don't mention it," Febe said, her tone softening. "Just don't let me down, human."
Ignis glanced back at them, his golden eyes gleaming in the dim light. "Get some rest. We move at first light."
Kai closed his eyes, the hum of the fragment lulling him into an uneasy sleep. The path ahead was uncertain, but he knew one thing for sure—there was no turning back now.
