Chapter 33: Into the Depths of Hollow’s Reach
The narrow streets of Hollow's Reach twisted and turned like a labyrinth, the decayed buildings leaning precariously over the cobbled pathways. The air was thick with smoke and the sharp tang of burning metal, and the faint sounds of muffled arguments and clinking weapons echoed through the alleys. Kai followed closely behind Febe and Ignis, his eyes darting nervously at every shadow.
"This place feels alive," Kai muttered, clutching the fragment tightly in his bag. "And not in a good way."
Febe smirked faintly, though her expression was guarded. "That's because it is. Hollow's Reach isn't just a place—it's a battlefield, even when it's quiet."
Ignis nodded, his golden eyes scanning their surroundings. "Everyone here is either looking for an opportunity or guarding against one. Stay sharp, Kai. Trust no one."
Kai swallowed hard, his nerves fraying as they passed a group of mercenaries lounging outside a dilapidated shop. Their sharp eyes followed the trio, but they didn't make a move, their gazes flickering briefly to Ignis's glowing hands and Febe's confident stride.
"Are they staring at us because of the fragment?" Kai asked under his breath.
"Partly," Febe replied. "But mostly because we look like we don't belong. Outsiders are noticed here, even if no one says it."
---
As they delved deeper into the district, the atmosphere grew heavier. The narrow alleys opened into a sprawling market square, its edges lined with stalls selling everything from rusted weapons to glowing artifacts. The air buzzed with energy, voices overlapping in a chaotic symphony of haggling and arguments.
"This is the central hub," Febe said, keeping her voice low. "If the Ashen Order's connected to this place, we'll find their traces here."
Kai frowned, glancing around at the bustling crowd. "And how do we do that without drawing attention?"
"By not being idiots," Febe said, smirking faintly. "Follow my lead."
---
They moved cautiously through the market, Febe guiding them with subtle gestures as they navigated the crowded space. She stopped at a small stall selling worn maps and faded documents, her green eyes sharp as she exchanged a few quiet words with the vendor. Ignis stood nearby, his golden gaze scanning the crowd for any signs of trouble.
Kai lingered at the edge of the stall, his attention drawn to the strange assortment of goods on display. One item caught his eye—a cracked medallion etched with a sigil resembling a broken chain encircled by flames. His chest tightened as he recognized the symbol Fen had shown them.
"Febe," Kai whispered, nudging her arm. "Look."
Febe turned, her expression darkening as she followed his gaze. "That's it. That's the Ashen Order's mark."
The vendor noticed their interest and smiled faintly, his teeth yellowed and uneven. "Looking for something special? This piece has history—worth a fortune if you know what it represents."
"And if we don't?" Febe asked, her voice cool.
The vendor shrugged. "Then it's just a trinket. Pretty, though."
Febe leaned closer, her tone dropping to a whisper. "Who did you get it from?"
The vendor's smile faltered, and he glanced around nervously. "Information costs extra."
Before he could say more, Ignis stepped forward, his flames flaring faintly around his hands. "We're not here to haggle."
The vendor's eyes widened, his confidence faltering. "Okay, okay! I don't know their name, but they've been moving through Hollow's Reach for weeks now. Selling weapons, hiring mercenaries. They're setting up for something big."
"Where can we find them?" Febe pressed.
The vendor hesitated, his gaze flicking to the glowing flames in Ignis's hands. "Try the back alleys near the old foundry. They don't stay in one place for long, but that's where I've seen them most recently."
Febe nodded, tossing a few coins onto the stall. "You didn't see us."
The vendor snatched the coins eagerly, nodding quickly. "Of course. Never saw a thing."
---
The trio left the market square, the tension between them palpable as they followed the vendor's directions. The alleys near the old foundry were darker and quieter, the air heavy with the scent of oil and ash. The distant hum of machinery grew louder as they approached, mingling with the faint crackle of distant flames.
"This place feels wrong," Kai muttered, glancing nervously at the shadowy corners.
"It should," Febe said, her green eyes scanning the area. "The Ashen Order doesn't operate out in the open. If they're here, they're expecting trouble."
Ignis stopped abruptly, his golden eyes narrowing. "We're not alone."
Kai's heart skipped a beat as he followed Ignis's gaze. A figure emerged from the shadows, their face obscured by a dark hood. Their movements were slow and deliberate, their posture relaxed but radiating danger.
"Looking for something?" the figure asked, their voice low and gravelly.
"We're looking for the Ashen Order," Febe said, stepping forward. Her flames flickered faintly around her hands. "You seem like the type who might know where to find them."
The figure chuckled softly, their tone laced with amusement. "You've got nerve, coming here and asking questions like that."
Ignis's flames flared brighter, his expression hardening. "We're not asking."
The figure tilted their head, their gaze flicking between the trio. "You're either very brave or very stupid. Either way, you're not leaving here without a fight."
They whistled sharply, and the shadows around them shifted. More figures stepped into view, their weapons drawn and glowing faintly with enchanted energy. Kai's chest tightened as he counted at least six of them, each one radiating the same dangerous confidence as their leader.
"Well, this escalated quickly," Kai muttered, his grip tightening on the fragment.
"Stay close," Febe said, her flames flaring brighter. "And try not to get yourself killed."
Ignis stepped forward, his golden eyes blazing. "You don't know who you're dealing with."
The leader smirked, their hooded face tilting slightly. "Neither do you."
As the tension snapped and the first attack was launched, the narrow alley erupted into chaos. The fight for answers had begun.
