Chapter 31: Following the Trail
The trio moved through the industrial district with purpose, their destination clear: a hidden contact known for tracking rogue contracts. The orb they'd obtained from Varik hummed faintly in Ignis's hand, its glow pulsing rhythmically as if it were alive. The fragment in Kai's bag seemed to resonate with it, the two energies creating a subtle, almost imperceptible hum.
"We're putting a lot of faith in this contact," Kai muttered as they weaved through the narrow streets. "What if they can't help?"
"They will," Ignis said firmly, his golden eyes scanning their surroundings. "If they want to keep breathing."
Febe chuckled softly, though her expression was serious. "I hope you're right. If this contract doesn't lead us anywhere, we're back to square one."
Kai sighed, his frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "How do we even know this person won't just sell us out? Everyone we've met so far seems to have an angle."
"They do," Febe said. "But information brokers care more about survival than loyalty. If they see us as the bigger threat, they'll cooperate."
Kai frowned. "Comforting."
---
The contact's hideout was buried deep in the industrial sprawl, hidden behind a rusted steel door marked with faint, glowing runes. Ignis raised a hand, his flames flaring briefly as he knocked sharply. The sound echoed through the narrow alley, and after a tense moment, the door creaked open.
A small, wiry man stood in the doorway, his sharp eyes darting between the trio. His hair was slicked back, and his fingers fidgeted with the edge of his worn leather coat. Despite his nervous demeanor, there was a calculating glint in his eyes.
"Ignis," the man said, his voice thin and reedy. "Didn't expect to see you here."
"Fen," Ignis said coldly. "We need information."
Fen's gaze flicked to Febe and Kai, lingering briefly on the fragment in Kai's bag before returning to Ignis. "You've got... interesting company. What's this about?"
Ignis held up the orb, its glow casting eerie shadows on the walls. "This contract. Trace it."
Fen's expression shifted, a flicker of apprehension crossing his face. "That's... not a simple request."
"It wasn't a request," Ignis said, his voice like steel.
Fen hesitated, his fingers twitching. "Fine. Come in."
---
The hideout was cluttered and dimly lit, its walls lined with shelves overflowing with papers, magical artifacts, and strange contraptions that hummed softly with energy. Fen led them to a central table covered in glowing runes and spread with maps, documents, and a few orbs similar to the one Ignis carried.
"Put it here," Fen said, gesturing to a clear space on the table. Ignis placed the orb down carefully, its glow intensifying as it came into contact with the runes.
Fen studied it for a moment, his fingers brushing over the surface. He muttered something under his breath, and the runes on the table flared to life, illuminating the orb with a web of faintly glowing lines.
"This is recent," Fen said, his tone distracted as he worked. "High-level encryption. Whoever commissioned this didn't want to be found."
"Can you break it?" Febe asked, leaning against the table.
Fen smirked faintly. "I didn't survive this long by saying no to challenges."
Kai watched nervously as Fen continued to work, his hands moving deftly over the runes. The lines of light connecting the orb to the table began to shift, forming intricate patterns that seemed to rearrange themselves in response to Fen's touch.
"This isn't just encrypted," Fen muttered, his brow furrowing. "It's layered. Each layer tied to a different energy signature. Whoever did this was thorough."
"Thorough enough to stop you?" Ignis asked, his tone sharp.
Fen glanced up, smirking faintly. "Not a chance."
---
After what felt like an eternity, the web of light shifted again, forming a faint image above the orb. It was hazy, distorted, but recognizable: a set of coordinates accompanied by a sigil. The sigil was sharp and angular, resembling a broken chain encircled by flames.
Kai frowned. "What is that?"
"The coordinates are in the outer districts," Fen said, his voice quiet. "A place called Hollow's Reach. It's... not somewhere you go unless you're looking for trouble."
"And the sigil?" Febe pressed.
Fen hesitated, his fingers tapping the table. "It's a mark I've seen before. Belongs to a group calling themselves the Ashen Order. They're not officially tied to any clan, but they've been... active lately."
Ignis's jaw tightened. "Active how?"
"Hiring mercenaries, attacking supply lines, stirring up rebellion," Fen said. "They're not just after power—they're after chaos. And from what I've heard, they've got deep pockets and deeper connections."
Kai's chest tightened as the pieces began to click into place. "So they're the ones pulling the strings?"
"Maybe," Fen said. "But they're not the type to show their hand. If you're planning to go to Hollow's Reach, you'd better be ready for a fight."
Ignis stepped back, his flames flickering around his hands. "We'll handle it."
Fen raised an eyebrow. "You're awfully confident, prince. Just don't say I didn't warn you."
---
As they left the hideout, the weight of the new information pressed heavily on Kai's shoulders. The Ashen Order. A group operating in the shadows, destabilizing the clans and fueling the chaos that was tearing Arcanova apart.
"This changes everything," Febe said, her tone grim. "If the Ashen Order's behind this, it's not just about the clans anymore. It's about the city itself."
Kai nodded, his grip tightening on the fragment. "Then we need to stop them."
Ignis glanced at him, his golden eyes sharp. "We will. But this isn't just about stopping them. It's about sending a message."
Febe smirked faintly, her confidence returning. "Then let's make sure they hear it loud and clear."
As they disappeared into the shadows of the city, their path set for Hollow's Reach, Kai couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into something far bigger—and far more dangerous—than they had ever anticipated.
