Veilbound: The Hidden Pact

Chapter 28: Ripples of War

The journey through the labyrinth was slow and tense, but the atmosphere grew heavier as they neared the edge of the underground nexus. The faint hum of machinery and distant voices had returned, signaling that they were once again on the fringes of the mercenary hub. Febe stopped abruptly, holding up a hand to silence Kai and Ignis.

"We're getting close," she whispered. "If the Lynx scouts made it back, they'll have warned their superiors. Expect resistance."

Ignis's flames flickered faintly around his hands as he stepped forward. "Good. We've wasted enough time hiding. It's time to make a statement."

Kai frowned, gripping the strap of his bag tighter. "You mean fight our way out? You do realize we barely survived the last group, right?"

Ignis glanced at him, his golden eyes sharp. "This isn't about survival anymore. The clans need to see what they're dealing with."

Febe arched an eyebrow. "You're planning to make yourself a target?"

"I'm already a target," Ignis replied. "But if the clans know we're not running, it'll force them to make mistakes."

Kai shook his head, his nerves fraying. "That sounds like a terrible plan."

Febe smirked faintly. "Terrible, but effective. The clans thrive on control. If we disrupt that, it might give us an opening."

Kai sighed. "Great. I'm surrounded by lunatics."

---

The hub was busier than before, the energy palpable as rogue factions and mercenaries moved through the dimly lit space. Febe led the way, her green eyes scanning the crowd with practiced ease. Ignis walked beside her, his flames subdued but ready. Kai trailed behind, doing his best to look inconspicuous.

As they navigated the crowd, Kai noticed the atmosphere shift. Conversations grew quieter, and more heads turned in their direction. Whispers spread like wildfire, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

"They know who we are," Kai muttered, his chest tightening.

"Good," Ignis said, his voice calm but cold. "Let them."

Febe shot him a warning glance. "Don't do anything stupid. We're not here to start a war."

Ignis didn't respond, but the fire in his eyes made it clear that he wasn't ruling it out.

---

At the far end of the hub, a large table was surrounded by several figures, their expressions sharp and calculating. Kai recognized the insignias on their armor—marks of the Lynx Clan and other rogue factions. The room fell silent as the trio approached, all eyes turning to them.

The largest of the group, a tall man with feline eyes and a predatory smirk, stepped forward. His armor was sleek and polished, his twin blades glowing faintly with magic. He looked at Ignis with a mix of amusement and disdain.

"Well, well," the man drawled, his voice smooth and mocking. "The rogue prince graces us with his presence. And he's brought... interesting company."

Ignis's golden eyes narrowed. "We're not here for pleasantries, Varik."

Varik smirked, crossing his arms. "Then what are you here for? To surrender? Or to burn this place down, like your kind always does?"

Ignis took a step forward, his flames flaring slightly. "I'm here for answers. Someone's been manipulating the clans—moving pieces behind the scenes to destabilize the balance. You know something."

Varik chuckled, the sound low and dangerous. "You think I'll just hand over information because you ask nicely? You've always been naïve, Ignis."

Febe stepped forward, her green eyes blazing. "Maybe he's naïve, but I'm not. We know the Lynx Clan's been making moves that don't make sense. Contracts with no names, attacks with no purpose. Someone's pulling your strings."

Varik's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, and Kai caught the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. But the mercenary recovered quickly, his expression hardening.

"Even if that were true," Varik said, his voice sharp, "what makes you think I'd tell you? Information like that comes at a price."

Ignis raised a hand, his flames roaring to life. "I can pay in fire."

The room tensed, weapons being drawn as the rogue factions prepared for a fight. Febe placed a hand on Ignis's arm, her voice low and urgent. "Don't. This isn't the place."

Kai stepped forward, his voice shaking slightly but firm. "We're not here to fight. We're here because this isn't just about the clans—it's about all of us. Whoever's pulling the strings doesn't care who gets caught in the crossfire. If we don't stop them, they'll burn this city to the ground."

Varik's eyes narrowed, his gaze shifting between Kai and Ignis. The room was silent for a long moment, the tension thick enough to choke on.

Finally, Varik let out a slow breath, his predatory smirk returning. "You've got guts, human. I'll give you that." He turned to one of his subordinates, nodding slightly. The subordinate stepped forward, placing a small, glowing orb on the table.

"This," Varik said, gesturing to the orb, "is what you're looking for. A recent contract—no name, no clan affiliation. Just a target and payment. This one was meant for you, Ignis."

Ignis stepped closer, his flames dimming as he studied the orb. "Who sent it?"

Varik shrugged. "We don't know. But whoever it is, they have deep pockets and an even deeper grudge."

Kai felt a chill run down his spine. "So, what do we do with that?"

"We follow it," Febe said, her tone steady. "Contracts leave trails. If we can trace it back to the source, we'll find who's behind this."

Varik smirked. "Good luck with that. Whoever they are, they've covered their tracks well."

Ignis grabbed the orb, his golden eyes blazing. "We'll see about that."

As they turned to leave, the weight of the room's gaze followed them. The whispers started again, but Kai barely noticed. His mind was racing, the fragment's hum growing louder as if it, too, sensed the danger ahead.
