Chapter 20: The Heart of the Core
The glowing crystalline structure at the heart of the chamber loomed before them, its light pulsing in slow, hypnotic waves. The closer Kai and Ignis got, the heavier the air seemed to grow, charged with magic so potent it was almost suffocating. The fragment in Kai's hands responded with an almost frantic rhythm, its energy vibrating through his entire body.
"Stay focused," Ignis said, his voice low but firm. "The core's heart isn't just a source of power—it's a force of will. If you're not careful, it'll pull you under."
Kai swallowed hard, his grip tightening on the fragment. "So, what exactly are we supposed to do? Just... touch it and hope it doesn't kill us?"
Ignis gave him a sidelong glance, his golden eyes narrowing. "Something like that. The core holds echoes of the past, fragments of memory. If we connect with it, it might reveal who set this in motion—but only if it thinks we're strong enough to handle the truth."
Kai frowned. "And if it doesn't?"
Ignis smirked faintly, but there was no humor in it. "Then you won't have to worry about the clans anymore."
"Great," Kai muttered, his stomach churning as they stepped closer to the crystal.
The light intensified as they approached, bathing them in a radiant glow. Streams of magic flowed from the crystal, weaving through the air like ribbons of liquid light. Kai could feel the fragment pulling him forward, as if drawn to the core by an invisible force.
"This is it," Ignis said, stopping a few feet from the crystal. He turned to Kai, his expression uncharacteristically serious. "Once you step into the heart's radius, there's no turning back. The bond will connect with the core, and it'll show you what it wants you to see."
Kai hesitated, the weight of Ignis's words pressing down on him. "What if I'm not ready?"
"You are," Ignis said simply. "You've already come this far. The core wouldn't have let you get this close if it thought you were unworthy."
Kai took a deep breath, his chest tight. He didn't feel ready, but Ignis was right—there was no turning back now. He stepped forward, the fragment glowing brighter with each step. The air around him shimmered, the streams of magic wrapping around his body like a cocoon.
The moment he reached the crystal, the world shifted.

Kai blinked, his surroundings dissolving into a swirling void of light and shadow. The reflective ground beneath him was gone, replaced by an endless expanse of shimmering energy. The crystal's light filled the space, pulsating in time with the fragment's hum.
"Where... am I?" Kai whispered, his voice echoing in the emptiness.
"You've entered the core's heart," Ignis's voice said, though when Kai turned, Ignis wasn't there. Instead, the dragon prince's voice seemed to come from everywhere at once. "This is where its power and memories converge. Focus, Kai. The core will test you before it reveals its secrets."
As if in response, the light around Kai shifted, coalescing into shapes. Figures began to emerge, their forms flickering like static. They were tall, robed beings with eyes that glowed faintly, their movements graceful yet deliberate. Their faces were obscured, but their presence was overwhelming, their energy pressing down on Kai like a physical weight.
One of the figures stepped forward, its voice echoing in Kai's mind. "You are not of the clans. Yet you carry a bond forbidden by our laws. Speak, human. Why have you come to the core?"
Kai hesitated, his heart pounding. "I didn't ask for this bond. I didn't even know magic like this existed until a few days ago. I just want to understand why this is happening—to me, to Ignis, to all of it."
The figures didn't respond immediately. They exchanged glances, their movements slow and deliberate. Finally, the lead figure spoke again. "The bond is no accident. It was forged with purpose. To seek the truth, you must face the cost of your connection."
Before Kai could ask what that meant, the ground beneath him trembled. The shimmering void shifted, and the figures dissolved into streams of light. In their place, a massive shadow began to rise, its form towering over Kai. Its eyes glowed like twin suns, and its presence radiated power and malice.
Kai stumbled back, the fragment flaring in his hands. "What is that?"
"A memory," Ignis's voice echoed faintly, though Kai couldn't see him. "The core is testing you. If you want its secrets, you'll have to prove you can handle them."
The shadow lunged, its massive claws slicing through the air. Kai barely managed to dodge, the fragment's energy surging as his fear spiked. He raised his hands, willing the energy to form a shield of light. The shield flared to life just in time to block the creature's next strike, but the force of the impact sent Kai skidding backward.
"Focus, Kai!" Ignis's voice rang out, firm but distant. "You've fought worse. Use the bond—let it guide you."
Kai gritted his teeth, forcing himself to steady his breathing. The fragment's energy felt wild, chaotic, but he reached for it anyway, drawing it into his hands. A blade of light formed in his grasp, its edges crackling with raw magic.
The shadow lunged again, and this time, Kai didn't run. He met the creature head-on, slashing with the blade as it struck. The blade cut through the shadow's arm, its form dissolving into wisps of darkness. The creature roared, its glowing eyes narrowing as it lashed out again.
Kai moved instinctively, his body reacting faster than his mind. He dodged the strike and countered with another slash, the blade glowing brighter with each swing. The fragment's energy coursed through him, fueling his movements as he pushed the shadow back.
Finally, with one last, desperate strike, Kai drove the blade into the shadow's core. The creature let out a deafening roar, its form shattering into shards of light that dissolved into the void.
Kai fell to his knees, gasping for breath. The blade in his hands flickered and vanished, leaving only the fragment's faint pulse.
"You've proven yourself," the lead figure's voice echoed, calm and measured. "The core will grant you its truth."
The light around Kai shifted again, forming a new image—a memory. He saw a grand council chamber, filled with figures from the clans. At the center was a glowing fragment, identical to the one he held, and a figure cloaked in shadow who reached for it with outstretched hands.
The memory dissolved, replaced by the lead figure's voice. "The bond was forged to destabilize the clans. The fragment was taken from the core to create a rift between them. You are the key to restoring balance—or destroying it."
Kai stared at the glowing void, his chest tight. "But why me? Why was I chosen?"
The figure didn't answer. The light began to fade, and the shimmering void dissolved into darkness. When Kai blinked, he was back in the chamber, the crystalline core glowing softly before him. Ignis stood nearby, his expression tense.
"What did you see?" Ignis asked, his golden eyes sharp.
Kai swallowed hard, the weight of the memory pressing heavily on his shoulders. "The clans... the bond... it was all a setup. Someone's been playing both sides."
Ignis's jaw tightened. "Then we have more enemies than we thought."
Kai nodded, his resolve hardening. "But at least now, we know the truth. And we're not going down without a fight."
