Chapter 18: Into the Leyline Core
The path grew darker as Ignis led Kai deeper into the labyrinthine corridors beneath Arcanova. The faint hum of the city above faded entirely, replaced by a rhythmic thrum that seemed to pulse through the walls, matching the beat of the fragment in Kai's bag. The air grew heavy, charged with an energy that prickled at Kai's skin.
"We're getting close," Ignis said, his voice low but steady.
Kai tightened his grip on the bag strap, his nerves fraying as the thrum grew louder. "I can feel it. It's like the fragment is... reacting."
Ignis glanced back, his golden eyes sharp. "It will. The fragment is a piece of the core. The closer we get, the more it will resonate. Stay focused—it'll try to overwhelm you."
"Overwhelm me how?" Kai asked, his voice rising slightly. "You're really good at giving vague warnings."
Ignis smirked faintly. "You'll find out soon enough."
"Great," Kai muttered, his pulse quickening.
The corridor widened, the walls giving way to massive stone pillars etched with glowing runes. The light from the runes pulsed in time with the fragment, casting the space in an eerie, shifting glow. The air here was thick with magic, each breath feeling heavier than the last.
Kai stopped, staring in awe. "This is it, isn't it? The leyline core."
Ignis nodded, stepping into the open chamber ahead. The space was vast, the ceiling arching high above and disappearing into shadows. At the center of the chamber was a massive crystalline structure, glowing with a brilliant, pulsating light. Streams of energy flowed through the air, converging at the crystal and radiating outward in a mesmerizing display.
Kai took a hesitant step forward, the fragment in his bag pulsing harder. He could feel its pull, as if it were trying to leap out of his grasp and rejoin the core.
"This is where it all began," Ignis said, his voice quieter now. "The leyline core is the heart of the city's magic. Everything flows from here—the power of the clans, the Veil Zones, even the fragment."
Kai frowned, his gaze fixed on the glowing crystal. "And you think this place has answers about the bond?"
"If anywhere does, it's here," Ignis said. "The core holds memories, echoes of the past. If we can connect with it, it might reveal who set this in motion."
Kai hesitated, the weight of the fragment pressing against his chest. "Connect with it? That sounds... dangerous."
"It is," Ignis said bluntly. "The core doesn't discriminate. If you're not strong enough, it will consume you."
Kai let out a shaky laugh. "You're really selling this."
Ignis smirked but didn't respond. He turned toward the core, his expression growing more serious. "Stay close. The core's energy is unstable, and the fragment will amplify it. If you lose focus, you won't come back."
Kai swallowed hard, his legs trembling as he stepped closer. The crystal's light grew brighter, its energy thrumming in his ears. The fragment pulsed in response, its glow spilling through the edges of his bag.
"What do I do?" Kai asked, his voice barely audible.
"Focus on the bond," Ignis said. "The fragment is the key. Let it guide you—but don't let it take control."
Kai nodded, though his hands were shaking. He reached into the bag and pulled out the fragment, its light almost blinding now. The moment it left the bag, the energy in the chamber surged, the air crackling with raw power.
The fragment's glow intensified, its hum growing louder until it was deafening. Kai staggered, his grip tightening as the energy threatened to rip the fragment from his hands.
"Ignis!" Kai shouted, panic rising in his voice.
"Hold on!" Ignis barked, stepping closer. "Don't fight it—let the energy flow through you!"
Kai gritted his teeth, forcing himself to focus. The fragment's power surged, flooding his body with heat and light. For a moment, he felt like he was burning, his veins filled with fire. But then the pain ebbed, replaced by a strange, soothing warmth.
The chamber around him shifted. The glowing runes on the walls blurred, and the crystalline core seemed to dissolve into light. Kai blinked, his vision swimming as the world around him faded.

When his vision cleared, he was no longer in the chamber. He stood in a vast, empty space, the air shimmering with energy. The ground beneath his feet was smooth and reflective, like glass, and the sky above was a swirling vortex of light and shadow.
"What is this place?" Kai whispered, his voice echoing.
"The core's memory," a voice said behind him.
Kai turned to see Ignis standing nearby, his golden eyes glowing faintly. But something was different about him—he looked more solid, more real, as if the bond had intensified his presence.
"We're inside the core," Ignis said, his tone grave. "This is where its power is stored, where the fragment was torn away."
Kai turned in a slow circle, his heart pounding. "And what are we supposed to do here?"
"Find the truth," Ignis said. "The core remembers everything—the creation of the fragment, the bond, and who's pulling the strings. But the memories won't reveal themselves willingly. You'll have to fight for them."
Kai's stomach dropped. "Fight? Fight what?"
As if in response, the ground beneath him trembled. Shadows rippled across the surface, coalescing into dark, shifting forms. Their eyes glowed with cold fire, and their movements were fluid, almost liquid.
"Memories," Ignis said, flames flickering to life in his hands. "The core guards its secrets. If you want answers, you'll have to earn them."
Kai stared at the shadowy figures, his heart racing. The fragment pulsed in his hands, its energy rising in anticipation. He took a deep breath, steeling himself.
"Okay," he muttered. "Let's do this."
