Chapter 12: Embers of Defiance
The air in the narrow alley grew suffocatingly hot as Ignis faced down the massive enforcer. Flames danced around him, their intensity lighting up the darkness. Kai leaned against the wall, struggling to catch his breath as he watched the dragon prince step forward with unshakable confidence.
"You just don't know when to quit, do you?" Ignis growled, his golden eyes locked on the enforcer.
The enforcer roared in response, its form shifting and flickering like a mirage. Its claws scraped against the ground, sparks flying as it crouched, preparing to charge.
Kai felt his pulse quicken. "Ignis, that thing isn't like the others. Are you sure you've got this?"
Ignis didn't look back. "Stay out of the way, human. This one's mine."
The enforcer lunged, its speed defying logic. Ignis moved just as quickly, his flames surging as he dodged the creature's claws. He twisted, striking the enforcer with a burst of fire that sent it skidding back, its form flickering as it hit the ground.
But the enforcer didn't stay down. It rose, its glowing eyes fixed on Ignis as it growled low and deep. The flames that had scorched its body seemed to dissipate, as though absorbed by its strange, flickering form.
"That's new," Ignis muttered, his jaw tightening.
Kai felt a chill run down his spine. "Uh, is it just me, or is that thing getting stronger?"
Ignis didn't respond. He raised his hands, summoning another wave of fire, but before he could release it, the enforcer was on him. Its claws slashed through the air, narrowly missing Ignis as he darted to the side. The flames he unleashed struck the creature again, but this time, it barely flinched.
Kai's chest tightened. He could see the strain in Ignis's movements, the way his flames flickered and dimmed. Whatever this enforcer was, it wasn't like the others. It was adapting.
The enforcer swiped again, its claws grazing Ignis's arm. He hissed in pain, the flames around him faltering for a moment.
"Enough of this," Ignis growled, his voice laced with frustration. He thrust his hands forward, a torrent of fire erupting from his palms and engulfing the enforcer in an inferno. The alley lit up like the surface of the sun, and Kai had to shield his eyes from the intensity.
When the flames died down, the enforcer stood in the center of the scorched alley, unscathed. Its glowing eyes burned brighter, and its body seemed more solid, more defined.
Kai's stomach dropped. "It's... feeding on your fire."
Ignis took a step back, his golden eyes narrowing. "Impossible."
The enforcer roared again, louder this time, and charged. Ignis barely had time to react as the creature slammed into him, knocking him off his feet. He hit the ground hard, his flames sputtering as the enforcer loomed over him.
Kai's heart raced as he watched Ignis struggle to rise. He gripped the fragment tighter, feeling its energy pulsing in his hands. He didn't know what to do, but he couldn't just stand there and watch.
"Come on, come on," he muttered, focusing on the fragment. The energy surged, wild and chaotic, but he willed it to obey. A faint glow began to form around his hands, growing brighter as he concentrated.
The enforcer raised a claw, preparing to strike. Kai acted on instinct, raising his hand and releasing the energy in a burst of light. The beam struck the enforcer, sending it staggering back and giving Ignis just enough time to roll out of the way.
The fragment's energy left Kai gasping, his knees buckling under the strain. He looked up to see Ignis rising to his feet, his golden eyes blazing with renewed determination.
"You're learning," Ignis said, a faint smirk on his lips. "But you've got a long way to go."
Kai staggered upright, his hands trembling. "I don't suppose you've got a plan for dealing with something that eats fire?"
Ignis's smirk faded, replaced by a grim expression. "If fire doesn't work, we'll use something else."
Kai blinked. "Something else? Like what?"
Ignis didn't answer. Instead, he reached out, his hand glowing faintly as he gestured toward Kai. The fragment in Kai's hands pulsed in response, its energy flowing toward Ignis like a river of light.
"Hey, wait—what are you doing?" Kai demanded, panic creeping into his voice.
"Trust me," Ignis said, his tone steady. "The bond ties us together. Your energy can fuel me, but only if you let it."
Kai hesitated, the weight of Ignis's words sinking in. He didn't fully understand the bond or the fragment, but he knew one thing—if they didn't stop the enforcer, they were both dead.
"Fine," Kai said, gritting his teeth. "Take it. Just don't burn me out."
Ignis smirked faintly. "I'll try not to."
The energy from the fragment surged, flowing into Ignis in waves of light. His flames roared back to life, brighter and hotter than before, but there was something different about them now. They weren't just fire—they were laced with the same shimmering energy as the fragment.
The enforcer hesitated, its glowing eyes narrowing as it seemed to sense the change. Ignis didn't give it time to react. He lunged forward, the enhanced flames trailing behind him like a comet.
This time, the enforcer didn't absorb the fire. It howled in pain as the flames struck its body, searing through its form like a blade. Ignis pressed the attack, his movements quick and precise, each strike fueled by the fragment's energy.
The enforcer faltered, its form flickering and breaking apart. With one final burst of flame, Ignis struck the creature's core, shattering it into shards of light that dissolved into the air.
Kai collapsed to the ground, the energy drain leaving him utterly spent. Ignis stood over the remains of the enforcer, his flames fading as he turned back to Kai.
"Not bad for a first fight," Ignis said, his smirk returning.
Kai groaned, lying flat on the ground. "If that was a first fight, I'm not sure I'm going to survive the second."
Ignis chuckled, helping Kai to his feet. "You'll survive. You don't have a choice."
Kai looked at him, his exhaustion giving way to a flicker of determination. "Then you'd better keep teaching me. If this is my life now, I'm not going to die without a fight."
Ignis nodded, his golden eyes glinting. "Good. Because the real fight is just beginning."
As the echoes of the battle faded, they disappeared into the shadows of the city, their bond growing stronger with every step.
