Chapter 10: A City on Edge
The neon glow of Arcanova's towering skyline flickered through the haze of the city's smog, a sharp contrast to the oppressive heat and surreal landscapes of the Veil. Kai pulled himself upright, his legs trembling as he looked around. The sound of distant traffic buzzed faintly in his ears, and for the first time in what felt like hours, he could breathe without feeling the weight of the Veil pressing down on him.
"We're back," he muttered, almost in disbelief. "We actually made it."
"Barely," Ignis said, his tone flat. He scanned their surroundings, his golden eyes sharp and alert. "But don't get comfortable. If the clans know we've returned, they won't waste time finding us."
Kai groaned, brushing dirt off his jeans. "Can I at least get a snack before someone tries to kill us again? Or maybe sleep for, like, twenty minutes?"
Ignis ignored him, his attention fixed on the shadowy alleys that surrounded them. They were standing in the industrial district, far from the neon-lit main streets of the city. The air smelled of oil and rust, and the distant hum of machinery reverberated through the narrow passageways.
Kai adjusted the strap of his messenger bag, still clutching the fragment tightly. The faint pulsing had subsided, but he could feel its energy humming just below the surface. It wasn't comforting.
"So, what's the plan?" Kai asked, glancing at Ignis.
"We need a safehouse," Ignis said, turning to face him. "Somewhere the clans won't immediately think to look. Do you have anyone you trust?"
Kai blinked. "Trust? In this city? Not unless you count the guy who sells me overpriced noodles at midnight."
Ignis's jaw tightened. "You're useless."
"Hey," Kai said, pointing at him. "I just saved your life back there. Twice, if we're keeping count. I think I've earned a little respect."
"You didn't save me," Ignis replied, his tone sharp. "You survived. Barely. There's a difference."
Kai opened his mouth to argue but stopped when Ignis raised a hand. His expression shifted, becoming more serious. "Quiet."
The word was barely a whisper, but it sent a chill down Kai's spine. He followed Ignis's gaze, scanning the shadows around them. At first, he didn't see anything, but then he heard it—a faint clicking sound, like claws scraping against metal.
"What is that?" Kai whispered, his voice tight.
Ignis didn't answer. Instead, he stepped in front of Kai, his body tense. The faint shimmer of heat radiated from him, and Kai could see the flicker of flames in his hands.
The clicking grew louder, closer. A figure emerged from the shadows, tall and angular, with a faintly glowing outline that shimmered like static. It moved with a fluid, almost predatory grace, its eyes burning like cold fire.
"Enforcers," Ignis muttered under his breath.
Kai's stomach dropped. "Again? These guys really don't quit."
The enforcer stepped closer, and two more appeared behind it, their forms just as unnatural and menacing. They moved in unison, their glowing eyes fixed on Ignis and Kai.
"You cannot run," one of them said, its voice layered and inhuman. "The bond will be severed. Surrender the fragment, or face annihilation."
Ignis smirked, the flames in his hands growing brighter. "You can try."
Before Kai could react, Ignis lunged forward, his flames exploding outward in a wave of heat and light. The lead enforcer dodged with impossible speed, its movements a blur as it closed the distance between them.
The second enforcer went straight for Kai. He stumbled back, clutching the fragment tighter. The energy pulsed in his hands, responding to his panic.
"Kai, focus!" Ignis shouted, slamming the lead enforcer into a wall with a burst of fire.
"Easy for you to say!" Kai yelled, dodging as the enforcer's claws swiped inches from his face.
The fragment's energy surged again, and Kai felt the familiar heat building in his chest. He raised his free hand, willing the energy to form something—anything. A spark flickered in his palm, growing into a faint ball of light.
The enforcer lunged again, and Kai threw the ball of light with everything he had. It hit the enforcer square in the chest, exploding in a flash of heat and force. The creature staggered, its form flickering like a bad signal.
Kai gasped for air, his hand trembling. "Did I get it?"
"Not enough," Ignis growled, slamming the lead enforcer to the ground. "These things don't go down easily. You have to hit harder."
"I'm working on it!" Kai shot back, dodging as the second enforcer swiped at him again.
The third enforcer circled around, cutting off Kai's escape. He backed up, his heart racing as both creatures closed in. The fragment pulsed more insistently, its energy building again.
"Use it," Ignis shouted, his flames roaring as he clashed with the lead enforcer. "The bond gives you power. Stop fighting it and use it!"
Kai clenched his teeth, his grip on the fragment tightening. The energy inside felt wild and uncontrollable, but he didn't have a choice. He closed his eyes, focusing on the fragment's pulse, and let the energy flow through him.
Heat surged through his body, and when he opened his eyes, the world seemed sharper, brighter. The enforcers lunged, but this time, Kai didn't hesitate. He raised both hands, the fragment's energy manifesting as twin arcs of light that crackled like electricity.
With a shout, he unleashed the energy, the twin arcs colliding with the enforcers in a burst of force. The creatures shattered like glass, their forms dissolving into shards of light that vanished into the air.
Kai fell to his knees, gasping for breath. The energy faded, leaving him drained and trembling. He looked up to see Ignis standing over the lead enforcer, his flames reducing it to ash.
"You're learning," Ignis said, his tone neutral.
Kai let out a weak laugh, collapsing onto his back. "Yeah, but at this rate, I'll die before I get good at it."
Ignis offered him a hand, pulling him to his feet. "You won't have that luxury. There's no room for mistakes in this world."
Kai looked at him, his expression serious. "Then teach me. If I'm stuck with this bond, I need to know how to use it."
Ignis raised an eyebrow but nodded. "Fine. But we need to move first. The enforcers were just the beginning. The clans won't wait long to make their move."
Kai adjusted the strap of his bag, the fragment's faint pulse still thrumming in his hands. "Lead the way, dragon boy."
Ignis smirked, turning toward the city. "Try to keep up, human."
As they disappeared into the shadows of Arcanova, Kai couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
