Vector Control In Tokyo Ghoul

Chapter 6: Downward Spiral_1

Six years had passed since the chaos that changed Kana's life forever. Now nine years old, she sat in her classroom, staring out the frosted window as snow blanketed the streets of the 4th Ward. Her pinkish-red hair framed her face and flowed down her shoulders, while a beanie strategically concealed the horns that had become a permanent part of her. Despite the teacher's voice droning on about geometry, Kana's mind was elsewhere, lost in the rhythmic dance of snowflakes falling outside.

"Kana Kirishima," the teacher called sharply, breaking through her trance. "If you're quite finished daydreaming, perhaps you'd like to solve the problem on the board?"

Kana blinked, her crimson irises slowly focusing on the chalkboard. Unlike most ghouls, her eyes didn't revert to brown but remained a striking blood-red—a constant reminder of her abnormality. The classroom fell silent, her classmates whispering among themselves as they waited for her response.

She tilted her head slightly, her thoughts probing the teacher's surface-level irritation and fatigue. It was easy—too easy, like flipping through a familiar book. She found the answer in his mind effortlessly.

"The radius is five centimeters," she replied, her voice calm and unwavering.

The teacher paused, clearly surprised. "Correct," he muttered before resuming his lesson. But his tone carried a note of suspicion. Kana's classmates continued to whisper, though she paid them no mind. She had long since grown numb to the stares, the gossip, and the unease that followed her everywhere.

This was a new ability that had somehow developed during the six years she spent living with the Kirishima family. One morning she woke up with the power to read minds, feel emotions, and her sense of smell had gotten much stronger. She had even been able to tell the blood type of the humans they all had last eaten.

When the bell rang, Kana was the first to leave, slipping into the crowded hallways. She navigated the throng of students with ease, her movements fluid and calculated. As she turned a corner, she nearly collided with Touka and Ayato Kirishima, the siblings who had become something of a mystery to her.

The school they attended was a combination of elementary and junior-high. Kana was a fourth grader herself in advanced placement, and Ayato and Touka were two grades above her.

Touka, her bright blue hair catching the fluorescent light, offered a friendly smile. "Hey, Kana," she said warmly, her voice cutting through the chaos.

Kana nodded in acknowledgment, her expression neutral but polite. Ayato, standing just behind his sister, crossed his arms and gave Kana a cold glare. His dark hair and sharp eyes conveyed nothing but disdain, a stark contrast to Touka's approachable demeanor.

"Don't mind him," Touka said, rolling her eyes at her brother. "He didn't do so well on Mrs. Nakimura's test."

In response to Touka's remark, Ayato's face just bore an even deeper scowl. "Tch."

Kana's lips twitched into the faintest of smiles, but she said nothing. The moment was fleeting, and she continued down the hallway, the encounter lingering in her mind. Touka's warmth contrasted sharply with Ayato's icy demeanor, much like the conflicting emotions Kana often felt within herself.

As Touka saw the fleeting back of Kana, Touka felt a deep-rooted pity for her and how her life went. "Ayato what the hell could possibly be your problem!" She smacked his head so loudly that every student in the vicinity turned towards the source of the sound.

Rubbing the back of his head Ayato muttered something under his breath and walked away.

"I don't trust her."

Outside, the snow crunched beneath her boots as Kana walked aimlessly through the streets. The beanie concealed her horns, and her hair framed her face in a way that made her blend in. Yet, no matter how well she hid, she couldn't shake the feeling of being out of place.

Her wandering eventually led her to a secluded alleyway. She leaned against the cold brick wall, her breath visible in the frigid air. The hunger, ever-present and gnawing, stirred within her. It had become easier to manage over the years, but it never truly went away. She hated it and yet, in her darker moments, found herself craving the release it brought.

"Kana," a familiar voice called out, startling her from her thoughts. She turned to see Renji Yomo emerging from the shadows, his dark coat blending into the dimly lit alley. His stoic expression was as unyielding as ever as he shot a piercing glare at her.

"You skipped training again," he said, his tone carrying a mix of disappointment and annoyance.

Kana shrugged, her gaze drifting. "Didn't feel like it."

Renji's eyes narrowed. "You don't get to 'not feel like it.' You're a ghoul. Since you don't have a kagune or anything of the sort, you need to exercise those RC cells by pushing it through your bloodstream in battle. Otherwise, you might go out of control and hurt somebody."

"I haven't hurt anyone," she retorted, crossing her arms defensively.

"Not yet," Renji countered, his voice low and firm. "But it's only a matter of time. Strength without discipline is a liability, not an asset."

Kana's jaw tightened, her crimson eyes meeting his unflinchingly. "If I'm so dangerous, why bother helping me? Why not just leave me to figure it out on my own?"

Renji stepped closer, his presence looming. "Because I know what it's like to carry power you don't want. And I know what happens when you let it control you instead of the other way around." A sad expression cut through his stoic one for just a moments notice.

The words cut deeper than Kana cared to admit. She looked away, her hands clenched into fists. The hunger stirred again, a painful reminder of her nature. She hated it—hated herself for needing it.

"Fine," she muttered. "I'll train."

Renji nodded, his expression softening slightly. "Good. Tomorrow morning, first light. Don't make me come looking for you."

He turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Kana alone with her thoughts. The snow continued to fall, muffling the sounds of the city. She closed her eyes, letting the cold seep into her skin. Despite her defiance, she knew Renji was right. She couldn't keep running from what she was.

As she stood there, the memories of the past six years crept into her mind. After her parents' deaths, Kana had been taken in by Uta and Renji. They had taught her how to survive, how to hide, and how to fight. But no amount of training could quell the darker impulses that lurked within her.

Her abilities had grown, her vectors becoming extensions of herself. She could feel them now, coiled and restless, like predators waiting to strike. She needed to use them to keep herself sane, but with each use she could fill something stir within herself - seeking as much carnage as possible. Both Human and Ghoul.

The only reason why I haven't already resigned to my twisted fate was because of my brain's abnormal growth and development. Even with it though I still feel like a trapped child that's really just a merciless monster.

Reflecting one last time on her past, Kana finally started the brisk walk back home in the white snow.

Later that night, Kana lay in bed, her crimson eyes closed as the moonlight filtered through the window. The room was silent, save for the faint sound of snow falling outside. But her rest was anything but peaceful. Her mind churned, shadows of her past and echoes of her hunger intertwining.

Suddenly, her eyes snapped open, a blank expression on her face. Slowly, she rose from the bed, her movements deliberate and almost mechanical. Without a sound, she slipped out of the room and into the cold, snow-covered streets with just her pajamas.

As she wandered aimlessly, a muffled scream caught her attention. Her gaze sharpened, and she followed the sound, her heart eerily calm. She turned a corner and found herself facing a horrifying scene: a male ghoul with a white and orange koukaku kagune was pinning a middle-aged woman against the wall, his kagune poised to strike.

"I know you're gonna fill me up lady, but not before I've actually gotten to taste you."

"Stop!" "Please Don't Do This!"

Kana's lips curled into a faint smile. "You're noisy," she said softly, her voice carrying an unsettling edge.

The ghoul turned, startled by her sudden appearance. "Get lost, kid. This doesn't concern you."

Kana tilted her head, her crimson eyes gleaming as they slowly spun into kakugan. The three different color irises bursting to light like supernovas. "You're right. It doesn't. But you're in my way."

Before the ghoul could react, Kana's now five vectors shot out, invisible but lethal. They wrapped around his limbs and pulled, tearing him apart with brutal efficiency. His body hit the side of the building with a sickening crunch, leaving a smear of blood on the snow-covered bricks.

The woman collapsed to the ground, trembling. "Th-thank you," she stammered, tears streaming down her face.

Kana turned to her, her expression softening into a gentle smile. "It's okay now," she said, her tone soothing. She crouched beside the woman, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You're safe now."

The woman nodded, her sobs quieting. But then Kana's smile twisted, her eyes darkening with an unsettling gleam. "Safe from him," she whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling tone. "But not from me."

The woman slowly looked up to see a psychotic smiling expression on Kana's face. Before the woman could scream, Kana's vectors struck again, piercing her chest. Blood splattered across Kana and at this moment she lost all self control.

Her hunger bested her and she ferociously started eating the woman non-stop until nothing was left. Once she finished, Kana slowly stood up zombie-like and walked over to the male ghoul.

She then controlled her vectors to precisely reach out into his back, taking his kagune sac out. Matching the skill of a surgeon; she then moved the sac towards her mouth and dropped it in - swallowing it whole.
