Chapter 29: Chapter 29: The News of Bai Yunfei
Li Jiu Feng gazed at the white fox, never expecting such a tragic backstory.
Her father had been killed by a high-ranking elder of the Taishang Dao, her mother exhausted all her energy to give birth to her, and she was sealed away for a hundred years due to her congenital flaws. After emerging into the world, she was relentlessly hunted because of her pure fur. Truly tragic.
"How did you learn the 'Ascension to Immortality Sutra'?" Li Jiu Feng asked curiously.
Logically, the white fox and Zhou Sheng had never met, so it was impossible for him to have passed on the sutra to her. Could it have been through her mother?
The white fox tilted her head in confusion. "What Ascension to Immortality Sutra?"
Li Jiu Feng replied, "The white celestial light you released when you broke free from my grip in the library."
"That's something inherent in my bloodline, it comes and goes. My mother said my father passed it down to me," the white fox explained.
Li Jiu Feng was astonished. So, the Ascension to Immortality Sutra could be passed down this way to the next generation?
"You're my father's senior brother, so I'll take my father's biography and leave," the white fox said, slowly backing away.
"Wait a moment," Li Jiu Feng called out.
The white fox immediately grew alert, her body tensed, ready to flee the moment she sensed any ill intent from him. Although escaping from Li Jiu Feng's grasp would be nearly impossible, she wasn't about to sit back passively.
Noticing her cautious movements, Li Jiu Feng smiled gently and said, "If you leave now, you'll be giving away your beautiful fur to the outside world. Why not stay? I'll make a deal with you. As long as you stay within the bounds of the Feathering Mountain, you can go wherever you like. I will also teach you the Ascension to Immortality Sutra. Your father was hunted by the Taishang Dao because of this very technique. The white celestial light within you is a part of the Ascension Sutra. Don't you want to learn the full version?"
The white fox eyed him suspiciously, uncertain whether she could trust him.
Li Jiu Feng smiled. "If I didn't want you to leave, I would have simply captured you. You'd never be able to escape. There's no need for this game of words."
The white fox narrowed her eyes and asked, "Why are you being so kind to me?"
Li Jiu Feng chuckled softly. "Because your father was a genius of the Feathering Sect, and he was also my benefactor."
After all, it was when Li Jiu Feng first read Zhou Sheng's biography and comprehended the Ascension to Immortality Sutra that he reversed his aging and defied fate. Now, seeing Zhou Sheng's living daughter, Li Jiu Feng would help her as much as he could.
The white fox paced back and forth, undecided.
Li Jiu Feng turned and began to walk away, waving his hand. "Don't overthink it. Tomorrow morning, I'll be meditating on the roof of the library. You can come then, and I'll teach you the Sutra's mantra."
Watching his retreating figure, the white fox let out a sigh of relief. She muttered softly, "I'll stay for a few more days and see if this Taoist really teaches me the Ascension Sutra. Then I'll decide whether to leave."
The next day.
As the first light of dawn broke, Li Jiu Feng sat cross-legged on the roof of the library, absorbing the morning's glow and circulating spiritual energy through his body. His surroundings seemed weightless, and his presence like that of an immortal.
Not far off, the white fox watched him intently, uncertain of her next move.
At that moment, Li Jiu Feng's voice reached her ears: "If you don't come soon, the morning light will fade. Remember, the morning is the best time for cultivation."
The white fox pouted but didn't argue. She quietly crept closer.
By the time she reached the roof, Li Jiu Feng casually released a beam of white celestial light, enveloping the white fox in its glow. Startled, she fixed her gaze on him.
Li Jiu Feng didn't make any further movements. With his eyes closed, he softly spoke, "Feel this light. It will guide you as you learn to circulate the Ascension Sutra."
The next moment, the white fox felt the celestial light enter her body, circulating through her meridians and activating the Ascension Sutra hidden within. The sensation was incredibly soothing, like being immersed in a hot spring.
She glanced at Li Jiu Feng before obediently lying down a little distance away from him, quietly absorbing the energy.
Li Jiu Feng opened his eyes, watching the serene white fox with a faint smile. It seemed that she had begun to trust him, if only slightly.
Thus, the Taoist and the white fox silently cultivated on the roof of the library, undisturbed by each other.
The morning light bathed them both, as if they were cloaked in immortal radiance.
When Li Jiu Feng finished his meditation and stood up to greet the white fox, she immediately got up and dashed off, refusing any further interaction.
Li Jiu Feng shook his head. The white fox clearly had suffered greatly at the hands of humans, and her wariness would take time to heal. It wasn't something that could be fixed overnight.
Time passed swiftly.
Several days went by in the blink of an eye.
During this time, Li Jiu Feng meditated every morning on the roof of the library. The white fox would come each time, keeping a respectful distance, and they would practice the Ascension Sutra together. Li Jiu Feng never spoke to her directly but focused entirely on passing the Sutra to her.
Once the morning meditation ended, the white fox would run off, and Li Jiu Feng never asked where she went. As long as she stayed within the Feathering Mountain, he didn't mind.
Apart from spending the mornings with the white fox, Li Jiu Feng continued his usual routine—reading, contemplating, and maintaining a calm, steady pace in his life.
The Feathering Sect seemed to be at peace, free of internal strife.
Even the cautious and suspicious white fox began to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the Feathering Sect. There were no power struggles or deceit, just a gentle Taoist and three novice disciples.
In such an environment, the white fox felt at ease. She came every day to practice with Li Jiu Feng and never once mentioned leaving the Feathering Sect.
Thus, the Feathering Sect gained an unexpected new member.
Over these days, aside from diligently teaching the white fox the Ascension Sutra, Li Jiu Feng also kept an ear out for news from the outside world. Bai Yunfei had been away from the Feathering Sect for over a year, and Li Jiu Feng had no idea where he was or what had happened to him.
While he suspected Bai Yunfei was probably fine, the uncertainty gnawed at him. What if something had happened?
So, Li Jiu Feng frequently sent his spirit out to the farthest reaches of the land, trying to pick up any rumors about Bai Yunfei.
One day, he finally overheard a conversation.
"I've heard that the Taishang Dao experts are gradually retreating from the Million Mountains. It seems they couldn't catch the juvenile Qilin."
"Could they really have caught it? The juvenile Qilin is the hope of the demon clan. If it grows up, it will undoubtedly become their leader. No top-tier demon would allow the Taishang Dao to capture it."
"True, I heard they tried several times, and many of the eighth-tier Dao masters died in the process. The Taishang Dao couldn't hold out any longer and retreated."
"The Taishang Dao lost face in the Million Mountains. They'll be looking to restore their reputation elsewhere, and Bai Yunfei, the Feathering Sect's leader, is in danger."
"You mean the Taishang Dao is targeting Bai Yunfei?"
"Of course! Bai Yunfei made quite a splash last year. The Taishang Dao isn't one to tolerate such behavior. They hadn't acted until now because the sect's experts weren't around. But now they've returned. Bai Yunfei is a perfect target for them to make an example of."
"If that's the case, Bai Yunfei is in serious trouble. The Taishang Dao has plenty of eighth-tier experts."
"Exactly. Now it's just a matter of whether Bai Yunfei can escape. If he doesn't act fast, he's in grave danger."
