Chapter 201 - The Whereabouts of Uncle
Chi Changye grabbed Gu Yao’s hand and said, “Just follow your instincts.”
Gu Yao nodded and flew at low altitude in the direction his senses led him. At that moment, Xu Chen’s voice echoed in both his and Chi Changye’s minds.
Xu Chen said, “I didn’t expect we’d circle back here. Chi Changye, do you think it was a coincidence that we originally opened the spatial rift leading to this place?”
Chi Changye was slightly taken aback. “What do you mean?”
Xu Chen replied, “Maybe the spatial barrier here is weaker and somehow connected to this place. We came here initially, and perhaps this is also the way to leave the Tianlin Continent in the end.”
Chi Changye also had a subtle feeling. “That’s possible. However, since we’re leaving, it might not be possible to return to my original place for now. Don’t forget about the Changxian Sect token brought by Gu Yao’s uncle.”
The Changxian Sect would not fail to investigate the source of the token, yet they hadn’t traced it back to Gu Yao or his uncle. This indicated that the Changxian Sect didn’t know much about Gu Yao’s uncle.
Xu Chen sighed regretfully. “You’re right. It seems we’ll have to take it step by step.”
He wished Chi Changye could quickly return to his original place, where the cultivation environment was clearly superior. Even the area where the Changxian Sect was located might not compare. But it didn’t seem realistic for now.
During the journey, Gu Yao and the others were fine, as they had encountered many remarkable things over the years, especially in the Cangkun Secret Realm. However, for Boss Dong and Ding Dali, the spiritual herbs and fruit trees they saw along the way left them in awe. They wished they could stop and dig up everything to take with them.
Gu Yao noticed that some of the spiritual herbs were quite rare, mostly found only in secret realms. What struck him as even more peculiar was the absence of any other living beings’ aura in the area. Yet, the strange flowers and trees below didn’t appear to grow wildly. Although their arrangement seemed to follow the design of formations and restrictions, it was still surprising.
The black kitten perched on Gu Yao’s shoulder suddenly let out a meow and darted away. It moved so quickly that Gu Yao couldn’t stop it. He let it go, considering that there didn’t seem to be any danger here, and the kitten had impressive abilities. It was unlikely to encounter any major problems.
As they ventured further, the spiritual energy grew increasingly dense. Ahead of them appeared a grove of purple bamboo, with a small bamboo house nestled at its center. The wind rustled through the bamboo leaves, creating a soothing sound.
The group landed in front of the bamboo grove. A crystal snake darted forward but was immediately bounced back by an invisible barrier.
“Gu Yao, you go take a look,” Chi Changye said, glancing at him.
Gu Yao nodded and stepped toward the bamboo grove. The barrier that had repelled the crystal snake seemed non-existent to him. He walked through effortlessly. The fatty youth nearby was stunned and tried to follow, only to find himself blocked by an invisible shield that kept them outside.
Chi Changye studied the purple bamboo grove and said, “Don’t bother trying. The entire bamboo grove and the house within form a complete formation. Only those permitted by the formation can enter. Otherwise, trying to force your way in would trigger a backlash. Let’s wait here for now.”
“Alright, the spiritual energy here is pretty good. Cultivating in this environment isn’t bad,” the fatty youth said, clearly pleased. Perhaps it was because they were deep underground, but besides the rich wood element in the area, there was also a strong earth element that suited him well.
Just then, a meow came from behind them. Chi Changye looked back and saw a flash of green light vanish into the bamboo grove. The kitten darted past them and also entered the grove without hindrance.
The kitten carried Gu Yao’s aura, so the purple bamboo grove couldn’t block it.
“What was that green light just now? Did the kitten chase after it? Could that thing pose a threat to Gu Yao?” Tian Feirong asked in shock. Something that even the kitten found difficult to handle? While the thought amused him, he also felt worried.
Inside the bamboo grove, Gu Yao also caught a glimpse of the fleeting green light. It paused momentarily after entering the grove, then quickly burrowed into the ground before he could catch it. The kitten ran up to him, realized the thing was gone, and angrily stomped on his shoulder, “complaining” to him.
“You’re saying it was a green spiritual being?” Gu Yao asked after deciphering the kitten’s report. Then he turned to Xu Chen. “Senior, what was that just now?”
Xu Chen had noticed it too. After some thought, he said, “You noticed how this place seems well-maintained, with the plants growing in an orderly fashion?”
Gu Yao was surprised. “So my feeling was correct? That thing…” He recalled records he’d read in the past. “Could it be… a wood spirit?”
Xu Chen nodded. “That’s my guess too. It’d be best to capture the wood spirit. Your spatial domain needs someone to manage it.”
Xu Chen wasn’t eager to be ordered around by Gu Yao. There had been several occasions where Gu Yao asked for “Senior’s assistance,” and Xu Chen only realized after the fact that he was being roped into menial tasks. As a proud alchemist, he didn’t want to be reduced to tending spiritual herbs for Gu Yao.
Absolutely not!
Gu Yao, while calming the kitten, said, “Let’s see what happens later. I’ll go into the bamboo house first.” He was eager to uncover any messages his uncle might have left and to find out where his uncle was now.
Although the aura he sensed earlier had been fleeting, it felt incredibly pure and carried no malice.
Standing before the bamboo house, Gu Yao gently reached out, and the door opened automatically. The entire house was built from aged purple bamboo, exuding a calming energy that soothed the spirit and filtered impurities from spiritual energy. Such mature purple bamboo could easily be crafted into powerful wood-elemental artifacts if taken outside.
As the door opened, Gu Yao’s attention was immediately drawn to a painting hanging on the wall. Curious, the kitten and Xu Chen also turned to look at it.
The painting depicted a handsome and elegant man whose gentle gaze seemed to fall directly on Gu Yao.
The kitten glanced at the man in the painting, then back at its master, and let out a meow.
Xu Chen remarked curiously, “Is this your uncle? He does resemble you a bit, but you lack his grace. You’re still a bit too green.”
For a rare moment, the cat and Xu Chen were in perfect agreement. Gu Yao couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. The first time he saw his uncle’s image, he had been struck by how extraordinarily beautiful he looked. However, from others’ descriptions of his uncle, it seemed he had never shown his true appearance.
The man’s gaze in the painting disarmed any sense of caution in Gu Yao. He unconsciously walked into the room, straight toward the painting. The man’s eyes followed him as he moved, and Gu Yao instinctively reached out to touch it.
As soon as his fingers made contact with the painting, a beam of spiritual light shot out from it and entered Gu Yao’s sea of consciousness. Gu Yao didn’t resist it.
Closing his eyes, he missed the kitten leaping up to slap the painting angrily when the man’s image vanished from it. Frustrated, the kitten let out a series of meows.
While Xu Chen, who resided within Gu Yao’s sea of consciousness, couldn’t see what was happening inside, he observed the scene outside. He realized that the figure in the painting was merely a remnant spiritual thought.
Inside his consciousness, Gu Yao once again saw the image of his uncle. The man’s gaze was soft as he spoke:
“Yao’er, you’ve finally made it here. Your uncle is so pleased. This means you’ve grown much stronger.”
“You’ve been wondering where your uncle is, haven’t you? Since you’ve reached this place, you must have a solid understanding of this continent and the origins of our bloodline. The Tianling Clan was once incredibly glorious, but after its peak came its downfall. Pure-blooded members of the Tianling Clan no longer exist. Both you and I are humans who carry traces of the Tianling bloodline within us.”
“This place was left behind by our ancestors after the great upheaval of heaven and earth. There’s a teleportation array here that can be used to leave. When you decide to leave the Tianlin Continent, come here to activate it.”
The image then transmitted the location and activation method of the teleportation array directly into Gu Yao’s mind. Gu Yao was stunned by the revelation—this array was far superior to the one in Shifang City.
“If your cultivation isn’t strong enough, you can stay here for a while to train. As you’ve probably noticed, the environment here is far better than the outside world. After I left Yuanyang Town, I came here to recover from my injuries. Once I healed, I used the teleportation array to leave. So, there’s no need to worry about me. As always, I’ll be waiting for the day when we can meet again. It’s a shame I couldn’t watch you grow up with my own eyes.”
With a sigh of regret, the image fragmented, and the remnant spiritual thought dissipated. Gu Yao was left with a flood of new information in his mind. Slowly, he opened his eyes and stared at the now-blank painting, a bittersweet expression on his face.
When Gu Yao had first received a message from his uncle’s spiritual thought, a sense of unfamiliarity and wariness dominated his heart. However, this time, he felt a profound warmth and closeness. Perhaps it was the awakening of the bloodline within him that made him realize that his uncle was his only remaining family in this world.
“There’s a teleportation array here?” Xu Chen asked curiously as the spiritual thought dissipated. This information was significant since it could determine whether he could leave with Gu Yao.
As Gu Yao walked out of the bamboo house, he replied, “Yes, there’s a teleportation array here. We can leave anytime. But for now, I want to stay and cultivate for a while. My uncle suggested the same. My cultivation level is still too weak.” If he left now, he would only be a burden to Brother Ye and his uncle.
Xu Chen could only shrug. It was true—Gu Yao was still too weak. If he ventured out now, he’d just be cannon fodder. With his special identity and the treasures he carried, it was far too easy for others to target him. At least here, Chi Changye was around to shield him. If Chi Changye were even slightly less powerful, Gu Yao wouldn’t have been able to remain safe and sound until now.
When Gu Yao appeared at the entrance of the bamboo house again, Chi Changye’s eyes lit up with a smile. He had been carefully monitoring the situation inside. If anything had gone wrong, he would have done whatever it took to break the formation and force his way in.
Gu Yao performed a few hand seals and said, “You can come in now.”
Chi Changye calmly walked forward. Tian Feirong and the fatty youth scrambled to their feet and quickly followed him. Meanwhile, Boss Dong and Ding Dali seemed much more cautious. Every single item in the purple bamboo grove was a rare treasure. Earlier, the crystal snake had been fixated on a single purple crystal bamboo shoot. Just by looking at it, they could tell it was brimming with spiritual energy—an extraordinary treasure!
